Thought I'd start a thread, so anyone planning on buying it can post any offers they see. I'm holding out for Amazon Black Friday as they had it on offer last year.

I'm in two minds still, if I should get it for dd11. She is completely obsessed with Pokemon, particularly Eevee. She has a Nintendo 2DSXL already. I did tell her it was too expensive and maybe if I found an offer I could get it but she'd get nothing else, or I could get her a few 2DS games and other presents, and she chose the second option. I wouldn't really just get her the one present though. I'm thinking of getting it anyway, and a few other smaller presents. I could ask family to buy her the 2DS games she wants. It's just so expensive, compared to presents I usually buy... my budget is usually around £200-250 for main presents and £70 on stocking.

I think the pokeball is the same with each Pokemon game.

I have used Very before, they often offer £30 off your first order.

Rainbowturkey · 28/10/2018 11:25

I think I paid about £340 for a Switch, Mario tennis and an extra pair of controllers - saved about £50 I think.

ProudThrilledHappy · 28/10/2018 11:31

Currys PC World have some good bundle deals including a game or two on offer. I am also waiting on black friday to see if I can get a good price, they are a good place to watch nearer to the time

Bumbumtaloo · 28/10/2018 11:32

We paid £269.99 for a Nintendo Switch and Just Dance back in the summer from Smyths. It’s a joint present for our DD’s for Christmas (9 at Christmas and 6). We have also bought MarioKart 8 which was £39 new on ebay. We also bought the steering wheels for £6ish also on ebay. We are debating getting two more controllers, not the little Switch ones but bigger ones so all 4 of us can play MarioKart together.

LouLouLoupee · 28/10/2018 13:24

We got DS a switch for his 6th Birthday in the summer. It is a great piece of kit. We all play it, I’ve been known to play it of an evening once he’s in bed!
I’m going to get his pokemon and Mario party for his Christmas. His Nana will give him money so he can go into the shop and choose one for himself.
We might buy him one game between Christmas and his birthday, but if not there’s plenty to keep him going

Lovemusic33 · 28/10/2018 15:17

Lou that’s great to hear it gets used a lot, I think that’s my main worry when spending so much on something. I have 2 dd’s Who both love Pokemon, dd1 is the one who wants the switch, dd2 struggles with game consoles but I’m hoping she will play it too. I can’t afford to spend that amount on each of the dd’s So although it’s dd1’s main gift dd2 will hopefully play it too as her gifts will be costing closer to £100 (she just wants Pokemon cards and a Lego set).

Here’s keeping everything crossed for Black Friday.

Oldraver · 28/10/2018 17:41

DS has asked for one the last two Christmas (or from when it came out)..said last year it was too expensive as we knew he would need a laptop. Plus we had problems with other tech with him

He still wants one but doesn't want to ask (big brothers come in handy for getting to the right info). He does have a Wii that we bought as the WiiU came out and was given an old X-Box so any consoles he has had were 'old' when he got them.

An offer would be good

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 28/10/2018 18:11

Ah if only this had been posted last week! Tesco were doing a Nintendo switch with a game for £279... they were all sold out of games so managed to convince them to let me take another game of similar value (got Mario odessy)

Staff discount was up at 20% so managed to get it for £230ish Grin my best bargain of 2018

MnerXX · 28/10/2018 20:43

DS has suddenly declared an interest in a switch. We’d normally spend £100-£150 for all his presents so this is a massive stretch. I was expecting he would want a console at some point but maybe not quite this soon. He’s 7.

We tried to tell him father Xmas can’t make something that big but he said the elves are clever and can make anything! Balls!

We’re not a massive gaming family. I am worried it won’t get used or we’ll get one and it will go out of date... the price of the games is shocking.

I have tended to get big things second hand before but there’s not much of a saving on eBay.

Not sure what our plan is yet but I’ll have to keep an eye out for any bargains in case that makes it possible...

DelurkingAJ · 28/10/2018 21:46

DH bought one in the summer which DS1 (6) adores. He can play some of them games by himself but often arrives asking DH to help him (or if it’s a thinking problem in a puzzle then me too). DH thinks it’s the best console he’s had (he’s what I’d describe as a casual gamer...last console was a PS3). I just like Mario Kart but can see the appeal and it’s great that they can use it with the TV at home then take it on holiday too.

slappinthebass · 28/10/2018 22:10

@MnerXX does he have a 2DS? At 7, and with no other gamers in the family I'd probably try that first. My 11 year old has had one for several years now, upgraded to a Pikachu XL one with birthday money.

I brought one on smyths a few weeks back, really good offer £189 for console and one game. Offer was only on one week but I’m sure thy will do more offers

Imustbemad00 · 28/10/2018 22:35

£189 and a game?? That seems too good to be true

MnerXX · 29/10/2018 09:24

slapinthebass what is better re the DS do you think? The price?

incywincybitofa · 29/10/2018 09:38

My DS really wants one and is trying to persuade DD she wants to have it as a joint gift. It is a stretch and there is so much fighting over the ps4. Personally I'd rather we invested in the VR system for the ps4 but I suppose I'm not playing it.

Lovemusic33 · 29/10/2018 09:45

I would be very happy to get it for £189, let’s hope that offer comes up again.

HauntedPencil · 29/10/2018 10:23

Also on the hunt for deals.

ALemonyPea · 29/10/2018 11:06

DS2 got one last year, it's a fantastic console. There are lots of games you can play against each other as well. It's great in that you can play it on the tv and also portable with the same game.

DS2 loves it so much, he sold is WiiU and bought more games with the money.

My only concern was the size of the cartridges, they're like and SD card size. We bought a cartridge holder www.amazon.co.uk/Power-Switch-Question-Block-Nintendo/dp/B0753BMZ51/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=switch+cartridge+case&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1540811123&sr=8-5 like this.

He has a long list of games he'd like for Christmas, he will get 2 of them as they're so expensive. Family members might get him them as well.

Alakazam8 · 29/10/2018 13:08

Jumping in here to ask a related question. I was thinking of getting a wii for my little girl so that we can play games together and she can be active whilst playing games like guitar hero and the sports games.
She really wants the Lego Star Wars game that is available for the wii. Having second thoughts and now wondering if I should go for a switch instead?
Although that would mean no Lego Star Wars game! I know next to nothing about these systems, anyone got any advice at all.

Lovemusic33 · 29/10/2018 13:30

We had some of the Lego games on the wii and were not that impressed by them (we had the Harry Potter ones and dd found them a bit tricky and soon lost interest). TBh the wii didn’t get much use in our house and we soon sold it, dd’s we’re younger then and not into Pokemon like they are now. Ddwants the switch to play Pokemon but has shown interest in mario cart and the smash game.

YouCanCallMeJodieWho · 29/10/2018 14:21

The Switch is a fab console. It's really sociable for kids to play with their friends as well. I have teenagers who normally 'play' with each other by shouting at each other over the internet using headphones while they game, but we still see actual human friends for Switch sessions.

Lovemusic33 my boys adored the wii lego games! Thought they were amazing.

Nintendo Labo was a huge hit here, but for an older boy. Hours and hours of inventive, imaginative activity.

3boysandabump · 29/10/2018 14:30

I'm getting my eldest a switch for Xmas. We already have 3 x box consoles, 4 tablets and 2 Nintendo ds but it's what he really wants and I know he'll use it as he often as I'll let him so don't mind spending the money.

I'm hoping amazon will have it in their Black Friday deals 🤞

Spiderpants · 29/10/2018 14:34

my 3 ds's got ths switch laat christmas as a joint gift - its an amazing console most popular games with my 4, 7 & 8 year old are mario cart, lego worlds ans lego city. fun amd eay to use. they have all asked for more games this xmas. i would definately reccommend

ALemonyPea · 29/10/2018 18:01

Alakazam, there are so many good Lego games, the new villains one looks good.

Labo is great, DS2 got the robot one and took three hours to build.

Stargirl90 · 29/10/2018 18:25

Let's go Eevee and let's go Pikachu are the same game the only difference is the Pokémon that sits on the players shoulder is either Eevee or Pikachu, they are like the partner Pokémon who will be with you through the game
