The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

The 2010 one was horrible, with the poor dog outside... Do you remember that?

Yep. In floods. The end really got me.

I don't want one of their cuddly penguins; I want an actual real penguin. Which I don't believe john Lewis sell.

No, they really smell. I was worried when it was sleeping on the bed, I was thinking "that's such a bad idea".

That was lovely. It'll get me every time on a bigger screen. I am especially a big old softie at Christmas time, I swear I get more excited than the kids.

I thinks it's a beautiful ad and it certainly brought a little tear to my eye.

Nishky : It's all about the imagination and how a young child plays with their toys. It shows innocence, freedom and love. Who could not feel a little tear? :)

Awwwww.

That's lovely.

Wasn't entirely won over and then oh my god the end. Big salty wet tears leaking everywhere. It's lovely.

The only one I really like was the boy counting down the days until he could give his presents. It was poignant and well-measured and had me in bits.

Although I did get a bit moist-eyed at the penguin hooker as DS aged 5 wants a wife for Barry his toy gorilla

I wasn't rating it until the end, then it got me.

They're doing a whole Monty & Mabel range on the back of the ad with little areas in each store dedicated to it! Plans trip to JL.

Omg it's the loveliest advert I've seen!

It made me cry at the end whe he looks up and realises his mum is watching him play and does that little smile,he looks like my little boy when he does that.I cried a lot too, always do at the JL ads.

Hmmm.

The sentiment is 'done' much better by The Velveteen Rabbit, imo.

and....

30 Penguin related items for sale at JL inc cufflinks, scarves and a 45cm plush penguin...

.... for £95..................

Bah! Humbug! Hmm

I did like the lad's expression when he slipped the penguin a fishfinger at the table though.... perfect! Grin

Conflicted.

Until I saw the ad I was feeling cross with JL due to the juxtaposition of my near-religious adoration in their gold star customer service ramming up against my real life experience of their not knowing arse-from-elbow dickwizardry, department passing games, and general 'I do not give a tiny shiny shit about your refund' attitude from both in store and online/telephone help staff.

Today they give me a penguin helping a little boy with lego.

And thus somehow there is a penguin onsie in my shopping basket.

Tricksy advertisement winning bastards.

And....

'you don't need to be alone.... real love....'

Bah! Humbug again.

BUT.....

my ds is 10 as poss ASD.
He has a collection of toy cats (no longer made) that he is still extremely attached to.
the only thing he wants for Christmas, really, is more of them.
H said NO.
I shall be going onto ebay now and looking for some.
They are real - and very important - to him.

Damn you, JL! Grin
