Christmas

Blubbering mess

The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

It's also just an advert to create manic buying of that shoddy penguin merchandise. Last year people were going mad trying to find the bear and hare merchandise. For the love of god why! I've seen them and think they're over priced when you can buy a well made, well crafted plush brand for only a little more.

Agree why would this make anyone feel they have to get a JL penguin? I love JL, I like the ad and I did cry. But it wouldn't cross my mind to therefore be in need of a penguin from that shop. People are bonkers!

I do sometimes really want something and feel a need to buy it but only if I love it anyway. I don't get how this works either. At most, a JL, Boots or M&S ad might make me think "ooh it would be nice to have a mooch around the shops."

I did buy the small penguins but I originally went in there to buy the cutsey reindeer decoration for my mantelpiece and preferred the penguins so bought those instead.

I sure did at the idea of a £95 teddy.

The opening shot of the M&S as looks like clocking in time at the local high-class brother...

I've watched it three times now, can't tell if the fairies are cross with each other. What was their direction? They look a bit snippy.

I mean brothel, not brother.

For those who don't want/can't get a stuffed penguin......

much nicer idea!

I've just succumbed to watching it, online, since I'd not seen it on TV.

And had to buy Monty and Mabel cushions. I'd noticed that the Monty and Mabel MN scarves had sold out, though.

This guy is so tearful that he's fallen into his wine glass.

Much nicer idea to adopt one, floundering.

Grin at people who watched the ad and now 'have' to have 'Monty' and 'Mabel'. JL must be rubbing their hands together at their cleverness, yet again. Fair play to them.

Though still can't believe that the cheaply made penguin is selling for £95. You can buy a really well made penguin for a similar price, though not a 'character'

If this one got you, just WAIT til you see the Boots Ad!

M&S is the best though IMO

God knows why they all email their ads to me!

All Monty and Mabels penguins out of stock on JL website - boo!

Dancergirl · 09/11/2014 08:31

Oh no, do you think they'll get more stock in?

Maybe I need to watch it again. I settled in and was ready to enjoy it. I loved last years. This one didn't grab me. I literally just thought "oh, I see, that's sweet", and didn't get my much anticipated little cry!

Same here jsp56.
It's just an advert to me. Quite sweet, nicely done, but just an ad.

I didn't cry at all, personally I felt that the climatic scene where the little boy was playing with the toy penguins fell short of the mark. He looked very half hearted and sheepish/embarassed about it. I also didn't get that a boy of his age would actually act-play with stuffed animals like that any more. I think it's credible that a boy his age would still tote around his favourite baby toy, take it on trips etc yes... but it somehow stretches credibility that he could/would extend that old, familiar, loyal love to include a brand new stuffed toy with no personal sentimental connections. I don't believe he is young enough to really believe his toy penguin will really benefit from the new penguin mate. Also, dare I say it... I think I would have found it more believable if it had been a girl not a boy that wanted a mate for her toy.

But, it's still cute enough :-/ and I'm sure they will shift a gazillion penguins...

No I didn't cry. (Maybe because I was watching it thinking 'when will it make me cry?') But I have always thought that a penguin would be a lovely pet to have, and this advert has reinforced that for me.

yep, looks like someone pushed my cyberman button too. Also wondering how it was done, slightly nauseated and as ever miffed because it is only early November.

a JL catalogue fell out of my newspaper at the weekend. They seem able to charge £50 for a knitting kit of needles, pattern and lurid wool. Business is clearly where you find it!

Loved it! the boy is only 8 - loads of boys that age play with cuddly toys in a similar way. Not all but I know a few, some older. Maybe not with their mates but def privately

Best so far.
