The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

The advert which gets me every year - apart from the JL ones, which are clearly designed specifically to tug at my heartstrings because I always fall to bits - is that Mastercard one that's like the airport bit in Love, Actually. People hugging and cheering to see their loved ones. Every time it's on I have a wee blart. If DH hears it from the other room he'll run in to check I've got a tissue Grin

Yuk yuk yuk..that advert makes me feel sick! It just totally misses the mark. I thought it was bad seeing the penguin oagling couples..so horrible....but at the end i felt strange when i saw the little boy with the two penguins and then i thought...Why would a child of that age be thinking about pets in love!! OMG its hiddeous! If you asked that child if he thought that he would do that and its natural at his age im sure he would say yuk yuk...i am a teacher and i know that kids of that age would run a mile or tease each other with anything like that. The concept is wrong for that age. It is an adults concept of what a child might do..it is not from a child and that is why it is not a good advert. I dont like it.

Yes and my imagination says "mail order bride" :)
While your imagination does exactly what John Lewis's ad company wants it to do.

I think all the big brands should just do quite plain informative advertising through the year and then make beautiful ads at Christmas.
The cut-through and talkability are brilliant (as evidenced by this thread) and it would be a far better use of their budgets.

My poor sister, she is now in a rage with JL. She already has an actual rl Monty in the shape of a ds rather than penguin format and is currently expecting child 2. Top of girls name list is Mabel. I've had to break the news that she's going to have to rethink that one or face the repeated question for at least the first half of 2015 "like the John Lewis penguins?"

Calm down pixie! :o I do see what you mean but I think for the child it is about getting the toy a friend - that is how my DC see it certainly. 4yo DD has a favourite cuddly bunny and it's incredibly important to her that it plays with the other toy bunnies we have, for example.

I think the romantic love element is only what adults see and also actually I think it's part of the clever way the ad throws you off the scent. The song is about love, you see couples, the mum and dad, you think it's about romance... right at the end it hit's you it's about the child's love for his toy and his parents' love for him.

Well Greengardenpixie, my 3 year old DD has watched the advert today and was happy that the "penguin got a friend for Christmas".

Obviously she didn't interpret it as anything adult or sexual - but "real love" doesn't have to be sexual, adult or even remotely grown up surely?

An adult will see one thing (penguin mail order bride) and a child will see another (penguin friends).

I love it. I cried. DD loves it. She likes penguins. And friends.

For those who think it's adult/sexual/romantic love - do you mind the Disney film Wall-E? The ad really reminded me of that at first actually, especially the bit where Monty's watching the old movie clip.

Nothing wrong with wanting someone to love and be loved back, at any age Smile

Santas they did make it quite adult though because the penguin was looking at adults kissing and so on, it was clearly romantic love they were emphasising. They could have had the penguin looking at someone taking two dogs for a walk, or looking at two cuddly toys in a shop window or something, but they didn't.

I'll be interested to see what my 5yo son makes of it. He and his classmates have been 'marrying' each other since starting Reception last year.

DS has a different 'wife' every week except he mispronounces it 'whiff'.

I cried at it. Dp, Ds1 (3) and DS2 (9 months) all stared at me and laughed. The philistines.

Aahh love the Debenhams advert (and the use of The Frogs Chorus) but who's going to get all Hmm at the little girls in high heels and playing at the make-up counter.

The Boots one - she should've taken her blue tunic off before she left the hospital. Didn't she attend her Mandatory Infection Control ?
