The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

And it totally made me think "internet bride" too when Mabel was unwrapped!

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 06/11/2014 12:54

Sorry but the internet trolls did this to Calvin and Hobbes years back...although I think they wanted to induce real misery not happy-sad sniffles.

the randy penguin's bulging eyes were a bit creepy and pervy

Grin

That's exactly what my 15yo DS will say "Eurgh, perv"

I don't like the 'toys in romantic relationship' approach, just don't. Certainly wouldn't cry, have never cried at a John Lewis ad. I speculated the boy had a bomb in that box Wink. I do love the penguin though, especially the way it is part of the family, and on the trampoline Grin. I also like the portrayal of how real the toy is to the little boy, and all the imagination and love he puts into thinking about it. Will definitely be watching a few times to see the penguin!

Question is, is it worth investing in a couple now to sell at a profit nearer Xmas, or will they a) not sell out or b) I'll get too attached to them and have to keep them?

BlueKarou · 06/11/2014 12:57

Less sob-inducing, and a bit more fun is the

Just in case anyone needed a festive pick me up after being floored by the John Lewis and Boots ads.

Not me. I'm totally fine. Really I am.

when JL did the little boy and the present advert (Smiths song) were you hoping for a reinactment of the last scene of Se7en ?

Oh, they WILL sell out. People are mooning over them already Grin

I nearly bought ds a small Commonwealth Games mascot.
Didn't as waited till we went - but were not able to buy one in the gift shop.
Went back to JL next week and all the small ones (rrp £8) were gone and were selling on ebay (apparently) for about £100. So we left it!

Hmm about profit though. My dd lost her beloved toy rabbit from Ikea (rrp about £4). We were eventually able to track down a replacement from ebay, - for £22! Shock

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 06/11/2014 13:13

Bugger. Shouldn't have clicked on the Boots one.

Now I want a penguin AND my mummy back

Sad
EmilyGilmore · 06/11/2014 13:17

They are already sold out!! Monty AND Mabel, in the 25cm size anyway. You can still get the 13/14cm ones or the extra large.

The power of marketing.

MindReader · 06/11/2014 13:21

oh, SOLD OUT already is ridiculous. That's deliberate, at such an early stage.

I shall buy my penguin onesie elsewhere.... Angry

CaisleanDraiochta · 06/11/2014 13:24

I don't get these adverts, especially the Boots one- the mum is clearly knackered after doing the night shift, comes home looking forward to a good long kip but oh no, the whole extended family have turned up. I'd be pissed off if it was me! Half of them don't seem terribly plussed to be there either and others have just grabbed her a last minute gift of whatever was left on the shelf in Boots.

John Lewis- as others have already mentioned is about a lad buying his best mate a mail order bride for Christmas

Debenhams- kids go looting in a department store

Still nothing as bad as last year's Tesco ad, that really touched a nerve with me

snumpy · 06/11/2014 13:25

I must be a hard hearted bitch as it left me completely unmoved

MaryWestmacott · 06/11/2014 13:27

I cried. But then I have a low weepy threshold... (And ds's favourite stuff toy is called monty and did go through a phase of going everywhere with him...)

justshootmenow · 06/11/2014 13:32

I thought it was lovely, welled up with tears when Monty was looking longingly at the couples. Waiting to add the book to my JL Christmas ad book collection and get a Monty and mrs Monty for Ds4.

currieaddict · 06/11/2014 13:33

Oh, the JL is lovely but the Debenhams one is just delightful and got a wee quiver!

currieaddict · 06/11/2014 13:36

oh hells teeth. Boots.

UncleSue · 06/11/2014 13:38

Oh it's lovely. I want a penguin now, a real one please.

mmgirish · 06/11/2014 13:40

That was lovely!

ChubbyKitty · 06/11/2014 13:42

Oh good grief boots why?

Quenelle · 06/11/2014 13:44

It's lovely, but I didn't cry. And I used to cry at the end of The Eliminator on Gladiators every week.

I don't understand the urge to buy JL's penguin stuff though. The High Street is full of penguin-related tat.

Fortunately I own enough penguins so don't need to buy any more anyway.

curiousgeorgie · 06/11/2014 13:45

There is already a Monty Penguin on eBay...

Christmas at its best Hmm

BeGhoul · 06/11/2014 13:46

I didn't cry.

It was OK but I'm another one who simply through "FFS mail order bride penguin" at the end.

Traditionally, I don't cry at Christmas advertisements though.

DealForTheKids · 06/11/2014 13:55

All you 'mail order bride' naysayers - you're missing the point!

It's about the power of imagination!

And yes, I'm another who has just had to reapply her make up at work.

Ahem.
