GMTV are at it again-another survey about BFing

SofaKingFedUpOfSnow · 15/01/2010 07:01

here

I completed it out of curiosity. Some of the questions are really loaded and negative about BFing.

I've pointed out to them that they're not exactly unbiased as one of their major sponsors is nestle.

Can anyone do a link to the interview with the Hilary twunt and our Greenmonkies for me please I'd love to see it!

LaDiDaDi · 15/01/2010 13:59

I would like to complain about the survey on breastfeeding which you have on your website. Not only is the survey badly worded but it has an underlying tone of negativity towards breastfeeding which I find very annoying. Breastfeeding is not only the way that human infants were designed to be fed but, unsurprisingly, it offers a whole range of advantages to them over artificial feeding with formula. I am surprised that GMTV is not clearly promting these benefits as a responsible programme would and I cannot help but wonder if this is because of your links to Nestle.
I will watch with interest to see how the survey results are presented in your programme.

Was my complaint.

ChutesTooNarrow · 15/01/2010 14:39

What an utterly vile survey. I can half remember studying survey writing during my Sociology A-level 12 a few years ago and this is a prime example of how to be biased and fix for the result you want.

It is clear to me what kind of response GMTV want and it guts me to think that if they don't get this response it will be the fault of the 'activists' skewing the outcome.

Miggsie · 15/01/2010 14:47

Are human mammals?

Do mammals feed their young with their own milk?

Could you personally milk a cow and feed the milk to your baby?

Would you prefer to pay an enormous amount of money to someone whom you have never met to milk the cow?

TheCrackFox · 15/01/2010 14:56

Filled in the survey. What a bunch of twats. Not that I watch GMTV as I don't think it is aimed at anybody with an IQ of 50.

Hilary Jones clearly has issues and I hope he isn't a practicing GP.

loulou77 · 15/01/2010 14:58

As someone who has both breast and formula fed her children I added my two penn'oth worth to the survey this morning including the following:

  1. We already have the right in law to breastfeed in public (no "should we" about it)
  1. Breastmilk is nutritionally superior (fact not opinion)
  1. I take umbridge at being required to be "discreet" and not "expose" myself when out and about feeding my 4 month old DS2...breastfeeding is neither indecent nor unnatural. It's like comparing breastfeeding to topless sunbathing or pooing. In my experience the people who feel strongly enough about it to mutter or even explicitly object to me breastfeeding in public feel that way about the act itself, not the amount of nipple I am showing.

Although I feel I may be wasting my time....

StealthPolarBear · 15/01/2010 15:53

I wish people didn't feel the need to justify whether they bf, mix fed, ff. Surely this isn't a bf/ff issue, it's an ignorant bigot/normal person issue. No ignorant bigots on MN that I can think of.

loulou77 · 15/01/2010 16:01

you're right StealthPolarBear...and, on thinking about it, I am not sure why I put how old DS2 is either as that's not relevant...I may resubmit if I can

StealthPolarBear · 15/01/2010 16:07

don't be silly no need to re submit. I just would hate to think that anyone believes formula feeding = buying into this stuff.

imaginewittynamehere · 15/01/2010 16:38

I've written an epic complaint. I will be complaining to Ofcom following the broadcast of the episode containing their results (if survey is not positive following a MN hijack that is)

I am writing to complain about your current breastfeeding survey. It is one of the most negative & biased surveys I have ever had the misfortune to complete, filled with leading questions & badly worded statements. The questions are all structured to confirm a negative view of breastfeeding meaning that any results from it will be meaningless.
The question "Do you think a woman's breasts should not be displayed in public for any reason?" is particularly offensive - are you seriously suggesting that women Breastfeeding in public are DISPLAYING their breasts??
In addition the double negative in this question meant I had to reread several times to understand.
All mothers should be supported to feed in the best way for them, this should include receiving the correct information about breastfeeding, the natural way to feed a child for a MINIMUM of 2 years (see WHO guidelines which apply to all women in the UK, not just the third world). They should also be informed of the many & various risks of artificial feeding (formula) which include a seriously heightened risk of hospitalisation.
All mothers have a legal right to breastfeed a child of any age in public under the sexual discrimination act. Suggesting that others have the 'right' to object is encouraging further bullying of the minority of mothers who continue to breastfeed their children past the 6 weeks mark.
Finally Breastmilk is nutritionally superior (fact not opinion)

I am dissapointed as this is the last in a long line of pieces negative about breastfeeding from GMTV
I am surprised that GMTV is not promoting the positive benefits of breastfeeding as would befit a responsible broadcaster.

I look forward to receiving a response to this complaint.

KnottyLocks · 15/01/2010 17:32

I have had a response to my email to La Leche League. They are drafting a formal complaint as we speak.

SofaKingFedUpOfSnow · 15/01/2010 17:47

Didn't mean to post the OP and run this morning - but not had a chance to get back to it.

I hadn't realised there was a complaints part - I shall be cutting and pasting drafting a complaint.

I was livid this morning, and I'm glad it's not just me. I really can't believe what a bunch of twats they are for doing this.

I hope the power of MN gives them the results they obviously don't want.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 15/01/2010 17:48

Filled it in and vented my spleen in the comment box too.... keep bumping this thread!

SofaKingFedUpOfSnow · 15/01/2010 17:49

KnottyLocks that's fantastic.

Beware the Arm Chair Activist

handbagsandgladrags · 15/01/2010 18:58

Shocking survey! Completed & comments made.

The government are spending a fortune on the Change4Life campaign to tackle the growing obesity problem (as they should). It's just a shame they don't put some of that same money & effort into promoting/supporting breastfeeding.

TheCrackFox · 15/01/2010 19:04

I have also filled it in on behalf of my Dh.

SofaKingFedUpOfSnow · 15/01/2010 19:07

here is the link to the LK today interview.

Dr Hilary, for example, is a twat.

Bicnod · 15/01/2010 19:13

KnottyLocks that is great news

Can't wait to find out what GMTV's response is.

arolf · 15/01/2010 19:25

bloody hell, what an atrocious survey! I have filled it in and vented my spleen in the comments box. I am emailing it around everyone I know.
I will write a complaint to GMTV later on too.

TheCrackFox · 15/01/2010 19:27

Greenmonkies is gorgeous.

ZiggyMama · 15/01/2010 19:34

I've commented & complained. Has Kate Garraway said if she breastfeeds?

deloola · 15/01/2010 19:40

Yes she has. She did with her first - don't know about the second baby.

WinkyWinkola · 15/01/2010 19:47

Do you think that if MN started a campaign against Dr. Hilary Jones it would be effective?

Perhaps we could get him on MN to face questions......

Bicnod · 15/01/2010 19:48

Just watched the LK interview. Two points:

a) Greenmonkies is indeed gorgeous and incredibly well-informed and articulate

b) Oooooooo I want to slap that Hilary Jones - what a patronising twunt
