Helips Do you know why they have said it needs to be TV scan at all? Seems a bit odd for a 9wk scan. I have had 3 scans at or just before that point and none of those were TV Maybe they have your dates wrong?

Huge congrats and welcome to Gizzy and rachael I'm feeling constantly anxious but since the ms has kicked in I'm presuming this is a good sign so worrying slightly less than last week.

Flumpity I had near to no ms with ds1 and ds2. Only felt ever so slightly ill for a couple of weeks with ds2. With dd I was practically bed ridden for 16weeks I definately wasn't expecting that!! With last ds I had ms from 6-13weeks, so I'd say it's different with each pregnancy. I have just started feeling sick last week and it's awful this time around. Hope it passes soon.

Lissy Why on earth has your doctors taken so long to do a simple urine test?!!! I think you should ring them tomorrow and ask the receptionist what is going on. It may be that it's got lost in the system somewhere

EasyEggs · 29/03/2009 22:34

Sorry - congrats to you too sophable
Didn't mean to miss you off

helips · 30/03/2009 07:28

easyeggs not sure why they want to do a tv scan, I'm going to ring them and explain that i'll be 9 weeks and ask if i can have an abdominal one instead.

Had a good nights sleep but still so tired, think it's meant to ease up in the second trimester if I remember rightly from last time.

It's a lovely day today, think I'll take ds to the park and then go back to bed when he has his nap!

Have a nice day everyone

turtle23 · 30/03/2009 07:42

I have GOT to give up breastfeeding...it's becoming a bit uncomfortable!

BeckyBendyLegs · 30/03/2009 07:59

Morning all! Another day! I've just had my breakfast so expecting the nausea to kick in just as I set off for school with DS1. It's become part of the routine now... at least 5 more weeks of it to go.

I think I'm going to take DS2 to the library this morning and get some pregnancy books out - something a bit more up-to-date than my antique Miriam Stoppard bible.

ursigurke · 30/03/2009 08:03

Welcome and congratulation to the newbies!

About the type of scan: I found lots of different information in the internet, so it seems even until week 12-14 it can be a vaginal scan. I think you can see better what is going on. In Austria I went to the gynaecologist twice a year for a check up and a vaginal scan was included in the standard examination (maybe not with every doctor though). I never found it risky, everything seemed to be very clean and they always put a condom on the probe. So I agree, having sex would be a higher risk than a vaginal scan.

Second thing about the scan (not that I still think I would ever get one ): Is it common that the partners come with you to see it? It seems to be recommended (on German and Austrian homepages at least) that the partner goes to many of the appointments (apparently less complications when giving birth). I don't think I need my husband at every talk with the midwife but it might be useful at the first scan. It must be difficult for a man to really understand what is going on during pregnancy as they only see our "strange" behaviour. I think they would feel much more involved if they actually saw the image of their child moving on the screen (and not just later on a picture).

ButtercupWafflehead · 30/03/2009 09:07

Morning all!

Well, I'm at 8 weeks! (4 to go before the scan and hopefully telling everyone)

A few people have asked me if I'm PG, how rude! Perhaps it's because I've been unwell, or perhaps because of my tummy

Either way, if I wanted to tell you, I would! If I'm not telling you, it's because I don't want to! Why would people ask?!!

(pregnancy related overreacting)

Good luck everyone!

gizzy1973 · 30/03/2009 09:42

i really take my hats off to all of you waitng til 12 weeks to tell people as we have already told everyone now as neither of us could keep it quiet and as for my mum trying to keep it to herself - probably would have killed her

the thing is i am 35 and hubby 37 and we weren't sure whether hubby could have children anyway so i guess we are both so happy it is hard to not tell

ursigurke · 30/03/2009 10:02

I've told it all my family quite early and some friends too (and at work). As there is a high risk of mc, I don't want to tell everybody as I do not want to explain if it didn't work out. So I only tell those I would let know about a mc as well (like my family). I first thought it would be impossible to not tell anybody but it is also quite nice to keep the secret for a while... not always possible though, like for example about 10min ago, when a friend who knew we were planning to have a baby just asked

EasyEggs · 30/03/2009 10:35

gizzy no wonder you are so excited, you must all be over the moon

ursigurke with regards to the scan I always take dp with me. He came to all my MW appointments with dd just so he knew what it was all about but this time I think it will just be the scans unless he already has the day off when I have an appointment.

I have only told a few close friends so far. Waiting as long as possible to tell family as can't be bothered with all the "are you mad??" and "what on earth are you doing?!"s

Hoping to wait until I'm at least 16weeks but that maybe pushing it slightly what with the bulge I seem to have aquired

Cies · 30/03/2009 11:28

Morning!

Feeling less nauseaus these last couple of days, but still tired. I could sleep for England! SIL apparently asked DH why I was so tired yesterday, as we had lunch together then I toddled off to bed for an hour and a half snooze!

So far I've only told my mother, who will have told my father. No one else yet, although I really want to tell a couple of friends. But I've said I'll wait until DH wants to tell his family. I think we'll let them know this weekend, when I'll be 8 weeks. Having had a scan with a heartbeat makes me slightly more happy about telling them, although I will still play it down and ask them not to get too excited til we're past 12 weeks.

BeckyBendyLegs · 30/03/2009 12:53

Hello!

I'm back from a trip to the library with DS2 and I had a blood sugar hunger crisis in town and had to dive into M&S for FOOD! The queue was huge and I was worried I was going to faint or throw up there and then. I was fine though.

Easy how is your MS now? Has it eased a bit?

We've only told my mum and DH's parents, and a couple of close friends. Last time I was preggers I told everyone, including the man in the Spa shop and everyone I met and then of course had to untell them all when I had an MC. I think it is a good thing to tell close friends and family because should something go wrong you want support and sympathy but doing what I did was really a bit stupid. The man in the Spa shop kept looking at my flat belly and I could tell he was confused. Luckily we moved house before I had to explain!

Koumak · 30/03/2009 13:18

Afternoon all,
I haven?t been on for a while but have been checking up from time to time [addict emoticon].
I am sorry about your loss Cupcakefairy. I will be thinking of you tom.
Piper congratulations twice of joy! I wondered that there are no twins here yet. Surely you cannot be the only one (thinks about the size of her own belly).
Welcome all newbies Sophable,Gizzy1973, Raggie, Pinkfizzle and Rachel4. Hope I haven?t forgotten anybody. Great to have a midwife on this thread but now you told us you do realise you are going to be bombarded with questions all the time?
Am in my 10th week and still have not heard from mw or hospital so no dates for anything! Very frustrated and worried am lost in the system. Tried to call them but nobody ever answers
Luckily I am going on holiday to see my family on Saturday so will lose a week or two of the first trimester? Also have booked appointment with gynaecologist (Europe) so hopefully next to all the routine checks he will scan the bean as well!
Already told my family who are very excited and my boss and HR at work who were sworn to secrecy for another few weeks. And few friends I knew who would be happy for us and not the ones I wasn?t sure about if it makes sense. Haven?t told PIL and don?t want to. My SIL is pregnant too due Oct (definitely the favourable one) and as my MIL has opinion about everything we are ignoring that/them (or I am trying .
Sorry about the long post. Hope everyone is feeling okayish. I am either fraud or in trouble as no ms yet again (none whatsoever with ds so not sure if I should be worried - yet) but I am eating for England (and that?s bigger country than mine) and in pregnancy trousers at the weekends. Hiding my fat belly during the week!
Its lovely thread. Updated my details. Hope nobody is missed out.I will be 30 when this baby comes.

Hi all,

Well I had a test at uni ths morning and passed so I'm feeling happy now! Only dh and I know about the baby, I don't really want to tell anyone else until I've seen a scan.

However, I have my best friend's hen night in 2 weeks and I don't know how I am going to hide my lack of drinking on the night! The wedding is in 6 wees, and I don't want to tell her before that as the focus should be soley on her wedding, I don't want to distract her in anyway (that may seem a little odd, but we are very close, and I want her focus to be completely on herself!). So I'm really hoping not to tell her until after she's back from her honeymoon, when I will be around 16 weeks- don't know if I'll manage it!

Fruitpastels · 30/03/2009 13:59

ursigurke · 30/03/2009 14:03

Koumak - it was a bit freaky to read your post, it really could have been mine. I'm in my 10th week, haven't heard from hospital nor midwife, am scared that I got lost in the system, last time I called the GP, they said, the second doctor would refer me as mine was on holiday (although it "had already been dealt with" 10 days earlier), tried to call the hospital directly and nobody answered. I am seriously thinking of seeing the gynaecologist next time I'm back home (but I'm still not sure if I can go there over the Easter holidays and then they wouldn't be available anyway).
I just keep telling myself that it doesn't matter, the baby will grow and come out one day anyway. Examinations do not help they just give you some facts... which I would like to know before telling everyone. Well I guess, I'll try to call the hospital again this afternoon.

Koumak · 30/03/2009 14:49

ursigurke you are not with UCHL too are you? That would explain it! I am thinking of asking my dh who is at home today to try calling the hospital again as I cannot really do that from open plan office!

cupofteaplease thanks for updating the list again as I completely failed to spot the Oct details. Pregnant brain. What can I say?

Really busy stressful day (she says have been on here twice today already) I do not want to play. Leave me alone.

I have to go shopping this evening after work as well. Need some pressents for my family BUT I cannot face it. Who would?ve thought that? Not like me!

katster37 · 30/03/2009 14:50

Ursigurke and Koumak that is so frustrating that you haven't heard from the hospital re scans. How annoying. I would def hassle them. Does anyone know when the first midwife appt usually is, and whether it is at the GP surgery?

I am so tired. Got planning time this afternoon so have come home 'to plan a maths block' whereas I'm actually going to have a sleep.

I really wish time would hurry up... We have told my family and close friends so far but told them not to get too excited. Telling DH's family this weekend when we go to see them but for most people we are waiting until 12 weeks. Actually I'll be 11+3 at the scan - would you wait until 12 weeks if all is ok on the scan?
Hope you are all ok and welcome to the newbies!

scarlotti · 30/03/2009 15:01

usigurke and koumak if you are around 10 weeks now you should hassle your gp to find out when/how you get in contact with your midwife. Normally the booking appointment is done around 10 weeks and they book your scan at that, if you don't already have one. You also get bloods taken to test for various immunities.

kaster I'd say your good to go after your scan to be honest, shout it from the rooftops!

We have booked a private scan for tomorrow as we can't get one on the nhs for reassurance. Apparently my 2 m/c's aren't enough, I needed to have had 3 in order to qualify

So I will be about 8+4 and hopefully the scan will show all is well and growing as it should. We've told parents and immediate siblings, plus 2 of my close friends. I think if we get an ok tomorrow we might tell a few more but leave the wider world to after the 12 week scan.

eeyore2 · 30/03/2009 15:21

Hi everyone! Very excited today because I had my scan and everything was as it should be and there was a proper heartbeat as well! (Am 8 +2). Very strange feeling as this is my first pregnancy and now it is starting to feel very real! (although the constant vomiting has also made it feel quite real....)
Have a lovely week everyone and good luck to all the people doing battle with their GPs / hospitals!

scarlotti · 30/03/2009 16:18

congrats eeyore that's great news

cupofteaplease · 30/03/2009 17:13

I don't know if I've done the right thing- dh has booked me an early reassurance scan for tomorrow. It's a local place I'd found on the internet and it's relatively inexpensive. I was busy today, so dh rang up, and they only do early scans on a Tuesday so he just booked me in for tomorrow.

Problem is, I'm not due for my first midwife appointment until next week. Is it wise to go for the scan before seeing the midwife, or should I cancel? I think I'm about 7-8 weeks, but can't remember date of my LMP. Dh has just told me he informed the ultasound receptionist that I am 9 weeks! I am definitely not that far along!

Will it be too soon to see anything? I'm worried it'll be too soon and I'll end up more anxious than I am already!

Any advice?

ursigurke · 30/03/2009 17:44

cupofteaplease - I think I would go there even if there is a chance that you can not see anything yet (but I think at 7/8 weeks it should be fine). Not going there would probably not stop you worrying.
katster - I think I would tell after the scan, the risk seems to drop already after 10 weeks. I think it doesn't matter if it is a couple of days more or less.

little update of my NHS-experience:
tried again to call the maternity unit at the hospital which needs to be done between 2pm and 4.30pm (St Mary's near Paddington by the way).
I started shortly after 2.
1: busy line (took it as a good sign, better than last week when nobody answered)
2: no answer
3: no answer
4: busy line
5: machine "please call between 2 and 4.30" (it was 2.20)
In the meantime I tried again my GP. They "had dealt with it", I should have got already some news and I should ring the hospital directly.
I finally reached the hospital and they told me that they never had got a fax from my GP (she doublechecked) and that I had to tell my GP to fax the papers again which I did. So I am fairly optimistic I might finally get an appointment.
Koumak - I think it is a good idea if you or your husband call again until you reach someone at the hospital.

katster37 · 30/03/2009 17:50

usigurke that is so annoying. I know they must be busy, but not everyone would be as pro-active as you at ensuring it was all sorted. At least it probably will be now, and I have heard St MAry's is brilliant.

cupofteaplease I would definitely go. I am going next week when I will be 7 weeks. They can see the heartbeat from 6 and a bit weeks so you should be able to get some reassurance and a lot of people don't see their midwife til 10ish weeks anyway.

I have just had a 2 hour nap . Now I feel all groggy and was meant to do the washing up, put washing on etc and have done nothing, least of all any actual work. Oh dear. I can't help wishing you could at least think 'oh well, I feel crap now but at least in 7 months I'll have a baby' cos obviously it's not that clear cut. I don't think I deal v well with uncertainty!!
