My mother has diabetes - the permanent kind not a transient kind like this (it will go away). She's not pregnant (as far as I know!!). Anyway she has a little finger prick kit which she uses to monitor her blood sugar levels when she wants to, and is able to keep it under control through monitoring her diet. I know this sounds boring but like any type of diet - WeightWatchers, or low cholesterol, or high fibre or whatever - you can bend it to your preferences and can get used to it. I suppose you won't have much clearer info till you go to the special clinic.

In terms of your wee baby am I right in thinking it may mean a bigger baby and higher likelihood of intervention at the birth?

bealcain · 24/06/2008 17:07

buckets what are cooling cakes? i'm intrigued

poppysocks · 24/06/2008 17:08

Oh Dizzy, so sorry to hear that. Hope you're ok. At least they've found out now though so there's as much time as pos to treat it and get your head around things on the birth front.

Re: old people's names, had a recent debate about a friend calling their newborn Wilfred. I love it, esp. Wilf. Very cool. DH not convinced though. I do wish he'd be a bit more open-minded on the names front. Would make things far more fun

VintageGardenia · 24/06/2008 17:08

Buckets cooling cakes eh? So you've been BAKING!! Lucky Buckets house.

dizzydixies · 24/06/2008 17:10

VG thank you - am just trying to plough through it at the moment, there are 15 pages and they all seem to know each other

bealcain · 24/06/2008 17:10

PS it took DH so long to decline or accept names that in the end i picked one and went on and on and on about it, putting the name into conversations randomly without him noticing so that it was in his head. workd for ds2 and this one!!

bealcain · 24/06/2008 17:12

sorry for overlooking you Dizzy i know you get monitored more in pg and generally have big babies so that tends to make you a good candidate for early induction (38wks) to ensure the best possible fit into your pelvis.

dizzydixies · 24/06/2008 17:14

bealcain dd1 was 10lb4 and dd2 was 11lb1 without me having GD so feck knows what I'm in for this time

won't be induced again after dd1 - it was horrendous and I don't think its allowed after EMCS with dd2

am more concerned about effect it has on baby than me tbh - can't seem to find much on that

bealcain · 24/06/2008 17:18

didn;'t realise you'd had ECS....they def wont induce then.....cant help re: baby sorry

dizzydixies · 24/06/2008 17:19

hi poppy am glad to hear it all went ok and hasn't worn you out

who's wanting old fashioned names?

what about Herbert for Herbie?!! I LOVE Herbie or Herb as nns - evern Bertie is fab which could be Albert

VintageGardenia · 24/06/2008 17:22

So far as I know, if the GD is controlled during preg, only a small number of those who have it go on to have overly big babies. And I think I read on here that breastfeeding protects the baby him/herself from developing diabetes themselves.

TwilightSurfer · 24/06/2008 17:25

Dizzy even with GD all will be perfectly fine. Yoga may actually help you so don't return your mat so quickly. Agree with VG about it causing the bigger LOs but as long as yours in under control you can have the birth of your choice.

Bealcain, Elcie is on my short list as it's my grandmother's name (she's the one that's on her death bed....for the FOURTH MONTH...).

And for the record, I hope we start the POST-NATAL thread before I pop. But then I'm always a bit early to things...July 20th is 36+1....might be possible . BUT NOT ON THIS THREAD...we chat too much. I give us a week because lots are now on matty leave.

I'm totally out of breath and exhausted and all I've done is spend the last two hours working on my aunt's computer. Sometimes being a former IT Support person is NOT a good thing.

poppysocks · 24/06/2008 17:27

Bertie is fab, but in a Wooster/foppish sort of way. We also had a particularly stupid, but gorgeous cat of that name.

Are we ready for comebacks for Gertrude or Euphemia yet? Or how about Reginald, Gerald or Leonard? Just can't seem them on a toddler somehow...

TwilightSurfer · 24/06/2008 17:28

"sometimes" is missing from line about the big LOs. sorry.

My neighbor developed GD with DD2 and she had her naturally AND she wasn't big by any standards.

You'll be fine Dizzy.

Am always useless at the name chat but...

I love George.

(Sounds like graffiti in the school loos.)

Irish G names?

Garrett (is anglicised Gearoid (ga-road)

Irish C names

Connla (cun-la)
Cathal (cah-hal) means Charles
Canice (can-iss) was a saint, is cathedral called
Cabhan (cavan) not sure what it means, something rural no doubt, anglicised as Cavan is also a county name in Ireland

Cian is also very common here at the moment, is it used in UK? Is pron. kee-an.

VintageGardenia · 24/06/2008 17:53

Oh not Gregor, makes me think of Kafka, CREEPY.

TwilightSurfer · 24/06/2008 17:54

Buckets, I liked Cash too but thought it funny with your last name.

OP posts:
TwilightSurfer · 24/06/2008 17:55

VG, Kafka is what my MIL calls her cat my youngest cat. We call him Buddy.

Sorry that was slightly off topic.

On slings, met a 1-week old yesterday, he was very sweetly tucked into one of these for his first ever trip to the shops. Very cosy it looked & the mum said was super comfy for her.
