My husband died today

Five years to the day after moving here to be with me, on my son's 30th birthday my wonderful DH died.

He had had cancer, a stroke then the daft bugger broke his leg, he was so determined the cancer wouldn't get him despite it having a 3% survival rate and he was doing well until a massive stroke hit and all treatment was off. He died early this morning and spent most of the day here, in our home, surrounded by family doing family things. It was just me and him when he died, he looked for me one last time and I held him as he took his last breath, I told him he was loved and that his daughter was coming to see him today. For the first time in weeks he looked free, no pain, no disability from the stroke just calmness.

I'm so sorry, you sound like you have been an amazing support to your wonderful DH. I wish you and everyone who loved your DH peace and happiness in the knowledge that he is free from pain, discomfort and cancer.

So sorry to hear that. I have read previous posts and know how much you have both been through in recent times. I wish him peace now he is free from pain, and I hope you are able to remember the good times and move forwards once things settle down. I'm glad you have family to support you.

I'm so sorry, bloodywhitecat. You write about him with such obvious love. He was desperately unlucky, but he was lucky in love and to die being so loved as he was by you.

(aargh I am sorry if that comes across trite but I don't mean it so and I hope you know what I mean.)

Thank you so much everyone, I went to bed early in the hope I would sleep. I am tired enough but I am not sleepy. I just went out into the garden to look at the stars and in the hope that the cold would help me to feel real if that makes sense. As I opened the door the tawny owl hooted, the number of times he woke me just as I was nodding off to tell me the owl was outside! I felt closer to him yet further apart. He is never going to bounce through the door on a Friday and declare "It's the freakin' weekend baby!".

The fosterlings are still here. My DD and S-I-L have been here since yesterday so they took the babies out so his DD and I could spent time with DH. The babies are now back and tucked up fast asleep.

All your messages are beautiful, nothing has come across as trite.

I am dreading tomorrow, the funeral planner is calling me. His DD and I have decided we would like to help dress him so we are going to arrange that, he's going to wear his wedding suit, he sure knew how to wear a suit did my DH.
