I have 3 weeks to go... When we found out it was a boy I knew I'd have the crazy name battles. Our DD has a V beautiful but V unusual Latin name. Trying to push his crazy names to middle names.
His boy suggestions are:
Aurelian
Hector
Titus
Lysander
Tiberius
Gaius
Uriel

My suggestions with his ideas have been either
Duncan (family name) and Titus as a middle name or Reuben (DH thinks too popular) and Uriel as a middle name. Thoughts?

My husband wanted Athelstan and Ethelred so I understand the fight you have on your hands.

Ethel for short, though Red is a good name

I'm going for a 'possible bully' vibe.

Aurelian - sounds like the area around a nipple and this will pop up (no pun intended) in biology or sex ed at some point.

Hector - as has already been said - another name for pestering

Titus - sounds like typhus, a disease caught from lice

Lysander - OK unless he does A Midsomer night's dream for GCSE

Tiberius - I can't actually think of anything an 8 year old would think of to bully, maybe this one is a winner.

Gaius - Some wag will call him Gay - us or Gay-as and yes I know it isn't pronounced that way

Uriel - Nope, too close to urine.

urbanbuddha · 15/11/2022 04:34

Duncan Ignatius.

RandomMusings7 · 15/11/2022 05:24

David (cause of the Goliath story)?

maeveiscurious · 15/11/2022 07:37

Claudius Ptolemy - I know a teenage Ptolemy no one has blinked at that name. It's interesting

Is your husband ok? 'Titus' and 'Gaius' in particular are horrendous names. He will just be bullied and will be very unhappy.

Just give him a normal name. He will thank you for it.

soulinablackberrypie · 15/11/2022 11:01

I think my favourites from his list are Aurelian and Lysander, although they both sound a bit upper-class to me. Hector reminds me too much of the verb to hector, meaning to pester someone, and I think Gaius and Uriel would be too inviting to schoolboy humour. However, Gaius is related to the name Caius or Kai - do you like Kai? And I just did a search on the angel Uriel, trying to remember if he was the "fallen" angel - he wasn't, but I see it can also be spelt Auriel. That would get around the urine jokes and it's quite close to Aurelian, without sounding quite so much like a Roman aristocrat. Titus and Tiberias are not quite my thing but not awful.

I love Duncan, I hope you get to use it. Duncan Hector actually works quite well as I feel like Hector has some kind of Scottish association, although it's of Greek origin. I think I like Reuben best with Lysander as a middle name.

tootiredtospeak · 15/11/2022 11:21

My son is called Gabriel.Gabe for short still love his name 11 years later and so does he.

I married a geek! I'm getting a bit fed up with pushing for these crazy names.
I just am leaning towards a normal boys names now. I originally didn't want anything too popular but I cannot be calling Titus from across the park! Not happening

Oooo I don't mind Auriel...

I am pushing for Duncan. I'm hoping as it's a beloved family name I can sway him that way. I told him he can have the awful Titus as a middle.name if his first name was Titus.... I mean who uses middle names often anyway!

I prefer your husband's names to yours. Hector and Lysander are lovely.

mathanxiety · 15/11/2022 14:41

Titus as a middle name makes the name sound like an infection.

Duncantitus...

HildaHedgehog · 15/11/2022 20:02

I couldn't go with Gaius just because of an (extremely smarmy, creepy) character in a science-fiction show. But I do love Latin names, particularly for boys. Lucas and Marcus are my faves, but Rufus is good too, particularly if there's that red-haired gene dancing around in your family's DNA!

greekyog · 15/11/2022 22:21

Roman
Rocco
Saxon
Hadley

I really like Duncan & was it not what David Bowie's son chose to call himself after he was fed up with Zowie Bowie - surely cooler than that you cannot get

I do like Hector and not sure the verb would have occurred to me at all.

I also like Francis .

But good luck with coming to a decision between you 💐

spiderlight · 16/11/2022 17:51

Lysander is a fabulous name, but the one we knew tended to be abbreviated to 'Lice' by his friends! That wouldn't be an issue with a middle name though - Reuben Lysander is gorgeous.

VenusClapTrap · 17/11/2022 11:49

I love your dh’s list. Sorry. Especially Lysander. My ds has a Roman emperor name (an unusual one); it suits him and he loves it. I also have a nephew called Gaius (but spelt the Dutch way) and no one bats an eyelid. Close friends have sons called Atticus, Otto, Athelstan, Magnus and Oberon. None of them get bullied. They all just seem like normal names once you’ve got to know the actual child, because it’s just their identity.

I also like Duncan and Ignatius; I hope you can talk your Dh into one of those.

How about Augustus (nn Gus) or Antonius?
