I have 3 weeks to go... When we found out it was a boy I knew I'd have the crazy name battles. Our DD has a V beautiful but V unusual Latin name. Trying to push his crazy names to middle names.
His boy suggestions are:
Aurelian
Hector
Titus
Lysander
Tiberius
Gaius
Uriel

My suggestions with his ideas have been either
Duncan (family name) and Titus as a middle name or Reuben (DH thinks too popular) and Uriel as a middle name. Thoughts?

Again I really do think people can like or even love names but did any of you choose names like this for your own children?
As I said before, lots of my friends agree and love his choices but not a single one picked a name outside the top 100 for their own children.

I don't have children but Hector is our first choice for a boy if we have one. I would also use Lysander but it's a hard no from DH. I think that having to compromise on names with someone else is why a lot people end up with top hundred name despite liking other names further down the charts, as they are more safe, broadly liked and less polarising.Titus, Tiberius, Gaius, and Uriel are all too much for me personally - but maybe that's partly informed by I don't like the names anyway.

What about Khrysos/Chrysos?

Mirabai · 14/11/2022 21:18

garlictwist · 14/11/2022 21:15

Is it not spelled Aurelien ?

Not keen on any of them. Please not Titus.

That’s the French version.

milawops · 14/11/2022 21:18

I love Tiberius. It was on my list for my son but my partner vetoed it straight away. I am a Star Trek fan though

Sopharsogood · 14/11/2022 21:19

Think about the taunting nicknames at school:

Aurelian - Oral

Hector - best of a bad bunch

Titus - tit

Lysander - lice

Tiberius - sounds like a dog

Gaius - gay

Uriel - urine

That is so true! What a way to look at top 100.
It would be so much easier picking names if only one person choosing!

If you don’t mind saying what’s your daughters name? (To see which names match)

Gummibär · 14/11/2022 21:22

Think about the taunting nicknames at school:

What about these popular names:

William - Willy

Gabriel - Gay

Benedict - Bendy Dick

Etc

Etc

In other words, most names can be teased if you try!

Gummibär · 14/11/2022 21:24

Children are bullied because they’re vulnerable not because of their name.

Well said!

NewJobGoingCrazy · 14/11/2022 21:24

Love those names!

MissEnolaHolmes · 14/11/2022 21:26

My son has a name which no one apart from his great grandfather had - very old name. He loves it - he is definitely one of a kind.

no bullying at all, no one bats an eyelid.

occasionally someone will ask where it comes from or the meaning and we tell them great grandfathers names are first names snd middle names. Sometimes for whatever reason someone hasn’t heard it but it isn’t an issue. I think he must be the only one in the U.K. with his name - but everyone knows him, the name fits him perfectly - second choice was Hugo and third was Huxley - so don’t worry about the name being made fun of - go with what you like eg marmaduke! 😂 ps my son is not called marmaduke but his best friends are similarly named 😂

puddingandsun · 14/11/2022 21:26

I really like Hector from the list. I don't think of it as 'out there'. I'd say it has the right balance of well-known, interesting, strong and not overdone.

There's also something special about choosing family-inspired names and Hamish or Duncan are both nice.

My dc's name is well known but is seen by some as outdated and is def not in the top 100. We like that.

Tiredalwaystired · 14/11/2022 21:26

Whatvabout

Donatello
Rafael
Leonardo
Michaelangelo

Hellno44 · 14/11/2022 21:27

What about Hadrian

In multicultural cities these days half the class will have ‘unusual’ names.

Children are bullied because they’re vulnerable not because of their name.

Yes. And those vulnerable children who get bullied will come to hate their names and potential resent their parents for not giving them a normal name. Some things are avoidable.

Blueberrywitch · 14/11/2022 21:27

Otto? The founder of the Roman Empire

LeMoo · 14/11/2022 21:28

Leander
Dimitri
Leonidas
Matthias
Orion
Uther
Evander

(Genuinely all names I love)

Any name can be made into or rhymed with something rude.

Gaius is pronounced Guy us.

LeMoo · 14/11/2022 21:31

Hendrick ?

Elderflower14 · 14/11/2022 21:31

Attics?
Thaddeus?

LeMoo · 14/11/2022 21:32

You could also have Caius instead of Gaius

Gummibär · 14/11/2022 21:32

A 'normal' name?

ANY name can be teased!!

William - Willy, Gabriel - Gay, Henry - Horrid, etc etc etc.

Names are meant to identify us and having a great memorable name makes that much easier.

Mirabai · 14/11/2022 21:33

BadNomad · 14/11/2022 21:27

The vulnerable children who get bullied may be picked on for their glasses or their weight or their height or their spots or their hair colour or their clothing or their accent etc etc - It could literally be anything.

The only thing you can do is teach children self confidence, resilience and how to stand up for themselves. That is the best bulwark against bullying - not running scared of what you fear people might say.
