Is this Mumsnet for me? Shocked at responses

Are there no group rules here about swearing, bring unkind, basic courtesy?
Is there no admin or moderator, or is this the kind of group everyone wants and the admin is facilitating?
There are some great responses that offer food for thought, while several others are plain ugly.
People presumably write in for support and advice, so how on earth do they feel when people chuck these ugly retorts?
I'm deciding whether to leave or stay.

I regularly leave for months and come back because there are threads and forums that have been really useful (the one for parents supporting A levels and uni applications have been brilliant) and downright funny if you have got to know the key posters there. The support for the specific parenting issues I have, has been really good and affirming. I’ve learned so much about how to parent my SEN children through their challenges as a result of the feedback, suggestions and links/research/books people have recommended.

However, I find the knee-jerk reaction to hate men indiscriminately unstomachable and the ‘is he/she autistic’ responses to abusive and nasty spouses or violent children shocking. The attitude towards SAHM is deeply misogynistic and unfathomable since this is meant to be a space where women are supposed to be supporting women and the whole point of feminism was that women should have choices about how they live their lives - and be respected for those choice… but not on MN. Being a SAHM means to you are lazy and financially leeching off your DH, who absolutely could have had his career, children, home etc (with the 18hrs days and global travel) without you there as his linchpin. Actually, having a decent loving DH who values you and your contribution to family life, and [gasp] voicing that really NAMALT in real life so that you can say to an OP that she absolutely should walk away from her abusive partner and find one of the good ones is utter heresy! And god forbid you ask whether it is unreasonable to be spending more than £100 to feed a family of 4 for a month.

Hmmm… I feel a little break from MN coming on. LOL

'Being a SAHM means to you are lazy and financially leeching off your DH, who absolutely could have had his career, children, home etc (with the 18hrs days and global travel) without you there as his linchpin.'

  • yes, I feel like sometimes people have a valid point if someone thinks their childcare and housework/managing (which everyone should agree IS invaluable) is fully irreplaceable so their husband could never leave them. Obviously the presence of a mother and the household managing SAHMs do IS irreplaceable, but if a DH does want to cheat/leave and is very high earning he would presumably be able to pay for live-in nannies, housekeepers etc. So in that sense people should never assume that in terms of logistics their DH could never leave even if he turned nasty.

But people who devalue SAHM's role, call it leeching etc are horrible.

I'm afraid i can't see why some posters expend so much energy on moaning about other posters AND STILL COME BACK.
Seriously, go to Netmums, or Gransnet, you'll fit right in.
(Though i'm a grandmother, i'm on here because GN is utterly anodyne.)

Perhaps they see and understand the potential value of MN but also acknowledge that its value is undermined by the excessive use of swearing?

MyObservations · 12/08/2026 19:24

I can understand that @Sausagenbacon but in some cases other mums come on here looking for advice, support or help with an issue. I see that but I can't help thinking that swearing doesn't really help except, perhaps, for the swearer. Surely we are all grown up enough to make our point or give advice (or not) without swearing? Does swearing really add any value to a discussion?

I am yet to see an otherwise helpful or supportive response to someone in need that has somehow been negated by one or more fucks. And honestly, if someone is going to dismiss an otherwise sound comment because of profanity, that’s their loss.

I don’t swear prolifically irl, and probably even less so here, but uncensored language has always been a thing here. It’s part and parcel of the site, take it or leave it.

MyObservations · 13/08/2026 06:24

@GinToBegin But unless you are the one seeking advice or support, how do you know the response hasn't been negated by "one or more fucks" as you put it?
