To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

NotTonightDeidre · Today 19:07

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

My daughter is 10
my sons are 7 and 14
I wouldn’t expect her to share with the boys or her dad

Do me a favour. I’ve never ever come across siblings not sharing. My boys and DD share a room, 16,20,23 I wouldn’t and haven’t ever given them the option not to

I’m away with my DS soon and we’ll share a room - I’m not getting 2 rooms that’s for sure

AgnesMcDoo · Today 20:51

My DS 17 and DD 14 shared a family room with us on holiday this year. As long as we are paying - they get what they get.

Ridiculous to expect to pay for a separate room for 15 year old!

Absolutely ridiculous to expect a 15 year old not to have their own room. Who the hell would ever want to share with their parents at that age. If you’re too tight to pay for their own space then stay at home.

Or they don’t bother. That would have been my choice at 17.

Peonies12 · Today 20:55

Sounds like an awful holiday all sharing one room! She is nearly an adult, she shouldn’t have to share with her parents and a toddler.

FudgeFudy · Today 20:55

The OP still hasn't come back to explain what the room situation actually was, how long for ,and the kind of holiday she was actually talking about.

It matters a lot to reply if the DD should suck it up for one night or if it's miserable to be stuck with family in the same room for 2 weeks.

Exactly, for a one-night stopover on the way somewhere it's fine. For a week or more I'd honestly rather not go on holiday and I'm not surprised if the daughter feels the same. I've been on extended family holidays to places that aren't really big enough enough times to know it can be bloody miserable.

Let me guess.... you are THAT 15 year old? Stay at home with garnny, dear, while your family goes on holiday.

You are suggesting basically paying for two rooms instead of one because a teenager is too precious about her dad seeing her in her underwear. Terrible, I know.

I took my 16 yr old b/g twins to London & the 3 of us shared a family hotel room for 4 nights. Couldn’t have afforded it otherwise. We all just got changed in the bathroom. Wasn’t an issue. But if your DD is uncomfortable she can’t help that & her feelings matter too!
As a family of 5 (2 DS, 1DD) it was often difficult & expensive for us to stay in hotels (2 rooms would be required) so we tended to get an apartment with at least 1 bedroom then 2 as DC got older. Could you do that?

Ok so the teenager doesn't get a holiday at all if parents can't afford to pay for a second room. It's not automatically being tight

Or maybe leaver her at home with grandparents staying then she hmcan happily have her own room by herself

I assume you also think it's ridiculous for this family of 4 to live in anything bigger than a one bedroom flat?

You assume wrong. Next!

We're spending 15 nights on holiday this summer (road trip!) and we're all sharing a room (me, DH, DS16 and DS13). We did the same last year. It's not ideal but it means we can stay away for longer and visit more places!

We change in the bathroom, go for a walk while DC chill etc.

Dismal. No-one wants to live on top of their parents when they’re 15, listen to them snoring etc

I’m suggesting you stop being so tight. And if you can’t afford another room, which is fine, camp instead - at least they can have their own tent and their own space.

calishire · Today 21:02

I think it’s normal to share although if it was a longer trip I wouldn’t necessarily want to. I mean…. What about camping? Most people all sleep in one tent let alone one room!

TheChosenTwo · Today 21:03

We always did villa style holidays so that everyone could have their own rooms, the same as they did at home. I’m not paying to go somewhere with less privacy or comfort than we have at home and expecting everyone to have a wonderful jolly old time. Our dc need some time to themselves sometimes.
Hotel holidays just don’t suit our family, when it’s just dh and I it’s fine but travelling with a family to squeeze into hotel rooms is not for me and wouldn’t have made for a very enjoyable holiday, I’m not making sacrifices on precious holidays!
Despite how that may read, we have a lot of fun away, games, laughter, late nights etc but everyone has their own space to retreat to as and when they want.

thatgreenjuniper · Today 21:04

I don't know many families where a 15 yo is expected to go to bed at the same time as a 2yo

More details would help!

Ohdearnotthisagain · Today 21:04

Well she can stay at home then, can’t she? Honestly…. bathrooms are for changing so there is no privacy issue. The rest of us grew up like this otherwise there would have been no holidays!

This. At your daughter's age her father does not get the final say.

It's a bad state where a 15yo gets to rule the roost about a family holiday.

If she's not happy then either she part funds an extra room or doesn't come.

At 15 she's a child.

Parents should always get the final say over children.

There’s nothing “too precious” about privacy.

We don’t know if they can afford it or not. There’s always camping or glamping or a cheaper location.

Quite.

At that age, I think her view on not sharing with someone of the opposite sex should be respected.

she doesn't rule the roost but is entitled to her privacy.
