To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

At that age, I think her view on not sharing with someone of the opposite sex should be respected.

me too

We don’t know if they can afford it or not. There’s always camping or glamping or a cheaper location.

Camping? That's not a holiday.

Wonder if the 15 year old will be so bloody precious in a few years if she shows backpacking and stays in dorms

It's a bad state where a 15yo gets to rule the roost about a family holiday.

If she's not happy then either she part funds an extra room or doesn't come.

At 15 she's a child.

Parents should always get the final say over children.

Expressing a preference is not ruling the roost.

She can choose not to go. But I bet you the parents will start whining that it’s not a family holiday if she’s not there.

Or they don’t bother. That would have been my choice at 17.

Yes that too. DS17 chose to come

It is for a 15 yr old. Sharing a room with your parents is no holiday.

Shinyhappyapple · 23/07/2026 21:13

I think sharing a hotel room is fine for a couple of nights but for a week or more I can’t see what’s enjoyable about everyone being squished into one room. I would be looking for an apartment - even if it’s a one bedded one with someone sleeping on the sofa gives a lot more space.

BlossomValley · 23/07/2026 21:14

Haven’t read the whole thread but, due to the children’s large age gap, have to ask… is he your older daughter’s biological father?

Harassedmum123 · 23/07/2026 21:15

I think family rooms just aren’t big enough for two adults and two teen dc. We always book two rooms now. More often than not, teen DS and DD share as they get on well but we would be stifled in a room for four.

Poor mollycoddled kid. I first went to Paris on my own when I was 17. I was meeting friends but I was there alone for a couple of days first. It was amazing.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/07/2026 21:17

Heck no, that would be a terrible holiday.

Worthwords · 23/07/2026 21:19

I never shared with my parents, dad was a terrible snorer and I couldn't have slept a wink. I remember me and my siblings sharing and my parents always having a separate room. I do the same with my kids now, there is often a family room option that has separate spaces with a wall in between or connecting rooms. Everyone needs their space, teens especially!

MerryUmberHedgehog · 23/07/2026 21:19

Get it but I recall we had a family room once. Me, DH and 3 DD aged 15, 13 and 11.

Shockingly, one can do both. I holidayed with my parents and with my mates at that stage.

hay5689 · 23/07/2026 21:19

Back when I worked in hotels a 15 year old wouldn’t have been able to stay in a room by herself. I don’t know where you are going OP but it’s worth checking the age restrictions before falling out over this.

localnotail · 23/07/2026 21:22

Aluna · 23/07/2026 21:02

Dismal. No-one wants to live on top of their parents when they’re 15, listen to them snoring etc

I’m suggesting you stop being so tight. And if you can’t afford another room, which is fine, camp instead - at least they can have their own tent and their own space.

Very funny.

She feels how she feels. Her feelings are valid.

So did I, but not in a room with them.

My parents were really considerate of having teenagers. We took friends and they chose locations where we could go out and party. We had some fantastic family holidays.

ChalkOutlines · 23/07/2026 21:06

There’s nothing “too precious” about privacy.

This is an effing summer holiday, where you probably pay about 1k for a room for a week. And where you only going to use the said room to sleep at night. We are not talking about actual everyday living conditions here, you are aware of that?

If it was my teen they would be either sharing or staying at home. Its not about the money - its about spending it stupidly on something that's unnecessary.

ElizaSchuyler · 23/07/2026 21:33

Me & dh will be sharing a room with our 24 year old daughter in a couple of weeks to keep costs down.

Last night I shared a room with 22 year old DS (it’s way too expensive to get two rooms when there is an event on at Wembley)

we did all stop sharing as a family of four when DS was around 14/15 but that was only because the 4th child trundle bed in the premier inns were too small for him.

And my parents were on a budget. So what? I could have stayed home, but took them up on the offer.

Cannybeme · 23/07/2026 21:34

So will all 4 of you be in 1room? What kind of holiday is it?

If she doesn’t have any valid concerns (you should check with her and hear her out) you could explain the price difference in upgrading rooms/location etc.. and see how she feels then?

You can get a whole house in Devon for 1k a week.

How much of a win is it for you if they stay home?

There’s such lack of respect for teenagers on this forum - what you and they see as ‘necessary’ may not be the same.

localnotail · 23/07/2026 20:59

You assume wrong. Next!

Well there's either a need to pay for separate rooms or there isn't ...

Most families of 4 don't routinely all sleep in one room unless the children are very young. This is because it's generally understood that people like their own space and their own privacy. These things also apply on holiday and are not "ridiculous".

Ohdearnotthisagain · 23/07/2026 21:39

Aluna · 23/07/2026 21:37

Isn’t that the entire point of the thread? The 15 year old can stay home if she doesn’t want to go on a holiday that is within her parents budget and wishes. That was my point anyway….
