To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

NotTonightDeidre · 23/07/2026 19:07

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

And if it was room sharing or no holiday at all?

It wouldn’t come to that as we’d pick a different holiday. That’s my point. We’d choose a different destination and accommodation to suit the budget and the needs of the family.

Well you are lucky you can. Sone people wouldn't be able to

Like where in school holidays

Like Devon 2 double bedroom cottage £973 in August.

Like 2 double bedroom 2 bathroom apartment in Lucca, Tuscany for £1015; or a 3 bed 2 bath apartment for £856.

Wow so not the " normal" All inclusive in spain then that many people go for

Fancy paying that amount or a cottage in Devon

I've said up thread that we compromised on other thing in favour of having our own room (me, adult DS and teen DS).
Maybe go away for a week instead of 10 days. Have to use the car more because we're out of the city. Eat out less.
It can be done.

Spidey66 · 24/07/2026 20:48

I'm with you and her. It's inappropriate.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/07/2026 20:49

We've had separate bedrooms on holidays for DDs and us since my eldest was about 12, IIRC.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/07/2026 20:53

Loubissou · 24/07/2026 18:42

My parents had the common sense to plan holidays where we didn't have to share a room with them. As a result, we didn't stay in hotels.

I have done the same with my own family. Sharing a room with teenagers, who want to stay up later than me, get up later etc is not a holiday for any of us. A holiday needs to work for everyone.

At some point, adults need to listen to their children and recognise that they are expessing a boundary that they are no longer comfortable sharing with their parents and plan accordingly. Ultimately, the reasons the child has set the boundary do not matter.

This. It's not necessarily difficult nor expensive, just a change of emphasis. Most people would do it without a second thought.

Luck doesn’t really come into to it. It’s an actual choice. You’re talking like the only option is to spend more money. You can go somewhere different, stay in something different, go for less time, go at a different time of year, go self catering and cook instead of AI or eating out, drive instead of fly, stay in the UK. There are plenty of ways to still have a holiday without sharing one room or leaving a 15 year old behind.

Hmm I'm sure the 15 year old will be happy in Blackpool in the pissing rain while all their mates are going abroad

I went to NYC with my ex, DD14 Ds5 . We were in one room. Was DDs dream trip I got cheap flights for. If id had to pay for a second room then we wouldn't have been able to afford the new York pass that got us into the attractions.

So shed had been to new York but not been able to go in anything due to having a separate room

Same as I took the girls to an all inclusive they wanted to go to. We shared a room no issue. They were 14 and 11 at the time. Again that holiday was their choice after they had been taken to a caravan in sheerness as a " treat" by their Nan ( where the girls had their own rooms in the caravan,) I'm pretty sure they preferred being in the sun and sharing a room

As for going from different times of year, yeah if you pull them out of school and get fined

LandSsmum · 24/07/2026 21:15

My 15yo shares with the rest of the family. She can change in the bathroom

Let’s recap:

You said: £1k plus to get another room

I said: What holidays are you going on where a room for a week costs £1k?

You can get a whole property for that.

You said: Like where in school holidays?

So I showed you. And those are reasonably high end examples.

Itsalittlebitwarm · 24/07/2026 21:25

When I was about 14 we did a barge holiday and us 3 kids took it in turns to sleep in parents' room. Really didn't think anything of it at all, changed into sleepwear then got into bed, that simple really.

So is there actually much to do near them? And can't guarantee weather in bloody Devon or is it just another load of cooking and cleaning just in another property for the parents?

Loads in that location. It’s in a small picturesque town with great foodie options, gastropubs, delis, cafés, outdoor lido for the kids, lots of historic sites, you wouldn’t have to cook for the whole week if you didn’t want to. Wouldn’t even need a car as it’s on the train and the bus.

Pedant61 · 24/07/2026 21:43

At 15, she needs and deserves privacy. Let's face it, none of us have wanted to share with our parents at that age!

Tickingcrocodile · 24/07/2026 21:45

1 night in a hotel for an overnight trip is fine. A longer holiday I can totally see why teens want their privacy. We have always done self-catering so everyone can have their own rooms. France is great value for spacious holiday accommodation.

Why is the only other option Blackpool
in the rain? You’re taking it from one extreme to the other and acting like there are no options in between. If you have the budget for a holiday abroad sharing a room, then you can find an alternative abroad that suits everyone if you’re actually willing to look.

As for New York, it was your DDs dream trip and she also doesn’t mind sharing a room. That’s absolutely fine. I don’t have an issue with people sharing rooms if they’re all happy too do it. My issue is booking a family holiday and dismissing one persons opinion rather than have a discussion and trying find a compromise that fits everyone. I just can’t imaging treating my child that way. It’s more important to my DH and I that we all actually enjoy the experience together rather than being so precious over specific destination or accommodation type that we’d be willing to leave a child at home.

As for the school fines kids get 13 weeks off a year so no I don’t buy that there are no other dates to be booked either.

Just had a nosey to distract myself from other stuff. Spain all inclusive for 4 1 room 1700ish , 2 rooms (same hotel, flights etc) 1900ish. So no, adding an extra room isn’t another 1k.

In the school holidays?? That would be interesting if so. I know someone who would go for that

we go back on the 3rd so I did 25th august -september 1st as we normally go just for one week. I’m looking at holidays for us as well, i didn’t just do it for this thread. 😬

Aparthotels/bungalows come around the 1900ish mark as well.

So if OP is paying for the holiday she gets the final say right? Even if that’s accommodating the daughter?Grin

lanthanum · 25/07/2026 18:15

For a week's holiday, DD has usually had her own room. For an overnight trip, or on the way there/back, she's always been fine about sharing (now adult). It's one thing doing the change-in the bathroom thing for one night, and another having no privacy for a week.

We often share a room the three of us - me my husband and our DS(15). If we’re in a villa or apartment for example he has his own room but in a hotel we just share a triple room, he finds it fun apparently! We travel a lot and it can get expensive, (especially this year in Japan) so it’s cheaper to share!
