Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

10 minutes! He doesn’t know how lucky he is 😂

canthavetoomanylights · 22/07/2026 17:37

You lost me at ‘forbids’. No man would forbid me from doing what I wanted.

Feelinghothothothot · 22/07/2026 17:38

Ten minutes seems a long time just to retouch eyeliner and brush your hair but he shouldn’t be angry about it. What is his problem?

Exactly this. He’d not be forbidding me to do anything!

SilenceInside · 22/07/2026 17:39

My DP doesn’t “forbid” me from doing anything. I don’t understand why he objects to turning the bedroom light on - is he still asleep whilst you’re getting ready? Surely not.

Anyway, nagging and moaning at you is not on. If you say you’ll be 10 mins then he should leave you be for that time and then just check if you’re ready. Or go ahead and you can catch up with him.

I rarely wear makeup during the day on holiday. I don't see the point if it's a resort/beach holiday. I never touch up my makeup at home never mind go to the effort on holiday. For the evening I wear makeup but don't bother touching up.

DH pays no attention let alone tells me what to do or harasses me.

campista · 22/07/2026 17:40

He needs training. Get him started, cheeky, selfish sod!

AggroPotato · 22/07/2026 17:40

Why does he need to wait in the room for you? Why can't he just go down to the bar or something, or read on his phone?

This is strange behaviour.

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:41

Forbid maybe be overstating but I don’t use the light in the main room until he is up. Which is only ever 10 mins before we agree to leave. He only needs to shower and dress in the morning. Whereas I do tend to do make up and hair.

Tell him to stop bugging you, making sure you look your best gives you confidence and makes you feel good about yourself, and maybe he should be making a bit more of an effort himself, if of course that's appropriate, but whatever you do, don't give into his demands. What a prick!

Overtheatlantic · 22/07/2026 17:42

“Compose yourself, child!” and continue with your lipliner.

palorina · 22/07/2026 17:43

I thought DH was having a go at putting on make up there.

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:44

it put me on edge every time we went back to the room. Bloody annoying

Is it really 10 minutes though? ‘A few curls’ will easily take 10 minutes and probably closer to 20 minutes - on its own. My mother is like this - always primping herself. What she thinks is 10 minutes is actually closer to 40 minutes. Luckily she gets up at 5am to start prettifying herself, and all her equipment is in a special cupboard in her bathroom.

Just tell your DH to go down without you and he can have a drink while he’s waiting.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 22/07/2026 17:54

Tell him to go sit in the lounge and stop moaning or you’ll move very slowly to piss him off more. He’s impatient, he needs to be impatient elsewhere.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 22/07/2026 17:58

Why does he even need to be with you for your mid-day touch up? Tell him to sod off and leave you to it. You’ll meet him at the bar when you’re ready. Impatient fucker!

DontrockthecaravanGeoffrey · 22/07/2026 18:01

I thought holidays were meant to be relaxed, happy times.

This all sounds depressing and regimented.

Can the man not entertain himself for ten minutes?
Why is it so important the room remains dark until 10 minutes before he goes out?
Is he any fun or relaxed in any other department or just 100% an arse?

Really weird, want to say he is BU but.. how dark is it that you need to put the big light on in the room on holiday? Why is your stuff not already unpacked into the bathroom assuming its big enough, or the dressing table/desk etc? How noisy are you being with the make up and hair, I can't imagine it making any noise to do make up, maybe spraying a finishing spray on your face but that's not going to register if he is asleep. Is it using the hairdryer for 20 mins or something, that would annoy anyone I think, especially if on holiday to relax and get away from usual routines. But in that case if you're adamant about wanting to blow dry he could go sit in the bar or start breakfast / get coffee / read his book without you. You could also de camp to the pool changing rooms if available and hair dry there, maybe do alternate days so you are both equally inconvenienced?

I think maybe you are both BU. Do you argue over these issues at home as well or just on holiday?

BasketCaseBug · 22/07/2026 18:03

He shouldn't be telling you what to do but to be honest my husband drives me mad faffing about in the room on holiday and it does feel like we are wasting our holiday time.

5128gap · 22/07/2026 18:24

If I couldn't have ten minutes to myself for whatever reason between one activity and another I'd feel pretty smothered. He needs to accept that a few minutes of your day belong to you, whether that's for make up or doing the macarana on the balcony, and he either waits patiently, comes up to the room ten minutes later, or goes down and meets you in the lounge.

AgnesMcDoo · 22/07/2026 18:30

I almost never wear make up so he’d probably wonder what was going on.

Seems like an extra faff to be bothering about on holiday.

can you not relax without it?

IPM · 22/07/2026 18:33

I voted YABU because I wouldn't keep anyone waiting for me, not even a friend.

If I wasn't ready when they were, I'd tell them I'd meet them wherever we are going.

youalright · 22/07/2026 18:33

How many times a day are you insisting on going back to the room to touch up your make up and hair?

operationplaytime · 22/07/2026 18:34

Maybe he’s worried other men will eye you up? But whatever the reason I’d have told him to shut the fuck up long ago.
