Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:35

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

@cardibach

you seem to think you are superior to other women so yes you are a pick me girl…why can’t other women be like you and be happy and carefree and easy going without slapping on ‘paint’ on their faces?! Why can’t they just be content in themselves and not hold up their husband from what he wants to do?! Pesky women and their silly slap, such a nuisance.

Goodness, make-up proponents are incredibly aggressive. I wonder why?

I’d say they don’t like snide judgemental comments, what’s your take?

it put me on edge every time we went back to the room. Bloody annoying

Who the fuck does he think he is? Tell him to leave without you and have the day to yourself.

This isn't the only incident of this type with him, is it?

It’s completely normal to go back to your room between a day out in the sun in hot weather and an evening on holiday. You would be very abnormal to never do this.

Why on earth would anyone lug a hairbrush and deodorant around to do it in a public bathroom rather than going home and actually freshening up after being in the sun/pool/beach?

Sure it's normal to do that in the evening, but that tends to be because you're showering off salt water, sand, chlorine, dirt from a day's sightseeing etc, and/or getting ready to go out for dinner and getting a bit more dressed up. That's not what OP is talking about.

Most people carry combs, which should be more than adequate for a touch-up. If you've got a bag with your sunglasses, book, suntan lotion etc in it's easy enough to include a small stick of deodorant.

You’re completely missing the point of the thread. It’s the OPs choice whether she wants to spend 10 minutes preparing herself in the morning. I’m sure we could pick apart whether each 10 minute slot of your holiday was optimally utilised based on our own preferences, but why would we?

The issue is that the OP’s DH is making what should be a relaxing holiday into an ordeal because he can’t let her spend 10 minutes doing something she wants to do at the start of the day… doesn’t really matter what it is.

It’s not even like he’s been up for hours waiting as he’s only been out kf bed for 10 minutes himself! It would be exhausting on a work day, but on holiday… it’s crazy! Don’t some people know how to relax?

I think it may be you who are missing the point. OP has said that the issue is not getting ready in the mornings, but when she goes back to the hotel room and insists on "freshening up". It clearly does take more than 10 minutes, given that she's including curling her hair.

“That’s not what OP is talking about” do you have a direct line to the OP or something because she hasn’t mentioned going back to the room multiple times a day purely to do makeup.

Why would OP have to do carry a brush and deodorant about with her because you do though?

I dont carry a comb because I cant use them.

Ditto stick deodorant.

But, mostly, I'd rather not freshen up in a public toilet when I can pop back to my room a mere 2 min walk away and take a few mins to sort myself out there. Much easier.

And who are you to dictate what is sufficient for a ‘touch up’? I don’t carry a comb or deodorant and would much prefer to freshen up in my room rather than on the go.

You can’t be serious, she’s on holiday, why on earth should she be banned from going back to her room and walk about with deodorant in her bag, ? I mean that’s disgusting in the base case, putting deodorant on over sweat.

Yep, a lot of women who don’t wear makeup are soooo snotty about women who do. It really doesn’t make them better, or more intelligent, or whatever they like to think.

Bellie710 · 23/07/2026 21:06

I suppose it would depend on why you are going back to the room? If you are just going back to grab a bag or jumper etc I would be annoyed but if you were going back to chill out for 30 minutes etc I can't see the problem.

Personally I would need 10 minutes from getting out the shower to leaving the room to be ready so can't see why anyone would need to go back and touch anything up but each to their own!

She specifically said they go back to the room to freshen up . It’s right there in the op.

The issue isn't her going back to the room, but that she's holding up everything else while she faffs around with curlers, make up etc..

The deodorant issue is purely OP's, in general people don't feel the need to reapply deodorant during day, presumably because they use effective deodorant. But if you really must, then it's easy enough to have a wipe under your arms first with wet wipes..

I'm not making anything up. Read the OP properly.

If that's what OP prefers, fine. But she's holding up other people with a lot of unnecessary faffing, and her husband is entitled to be unhappy about it.

Bloody wet wipes?! Not a chance I’d be using wet wipes to freshen up when I have a perfectly good hotel room I can use.

Why does his need to rush trump her need of spending 10 mins to feel fresher? There’s no evidence that she is ‘faffing’, that’s a narrative you (and others) are peddling to paint people who wear make up in a negative light.
The is nothing abnormal about wanting to pop back to
your room to freshen up before heading out for the evening.

Im currently on holiday. Every day the group has returned to the apartment to freshen up before we head out for the evening. Totally normal behaviour.
Because most of us are adults we just agree a time to go out. That way people can do what they need and want to before going out.
If someone is desperate to get out early then that’s on them. Their needs don’t dictate how the rest of the group spend their time.

Agree I can’t get my head round some of these responses, she’s on holiday, not a 15 min break at work, she should be able to do as she pleases, not be banned from spending 10 mins in her room as he can’t be arsed waiting.

Exactly. Good grief - when I am on holiday I like to be relaxed and feel fresh- maybe have a quick shower if I feel like it.

If someone was constantly rushing me to the point they couldn't even bear me to spend 10 minutes on this and couldn't bear to spend 10 mins alone at the bar without me whilst I got ready I'd think there was something seriously wrong with them!

I dont accompany my husband to the bloody toilet every time he needs to go so why cant her husband wait for her in the hotel bar or lounge and read the paper, get a drink, etc. They arent joined at the hip FFS

I dread to think what some people in this thread are like on holiday, it sounds like being in the flipping army where every minute is accounted for and you have regimented breaks of no more than X minutes 🤭

Hes not entitled to bore on at her though as they "agree" she can have 10 mins.

Cant get over that, "agree" 😂 like fuck id be seeking agreement. Id never expect him to ask if he can freshen up either. Im not uptight on holiday though tbf.

It read to me more like regular popping back to the room throughout the day rather than a before dinner shower/getting ready which if a quick touch up takes ten minutes, the evening getting ready would be at least an hour.

Yes this is how I read it to and the OP hasn’t clarified - I can’t see anyone having an issue with OP getting ready in the morning or getting showered, changed and tooshed up in the evening, that’s completely reasonable. However if she is “popping back to the room,” a couple of times a day to reapply I can see husband huffing a bit - yes he can sit in the bar or whatever but he’s probably thinking ffs let’s just get on with our day you don’t need all that.

I’ve read the Op. I’m not sure you have.
There is nothing there to state she’s going back multiple times.

Who made him the boss anyway? If she wants to spend 10 mins on touching up her make up that’s her prerogative.

If they are close enough for her to pop back to her room then presumably they must be in their hotel complex. In which case why is he huffing? if he is sitting by the pool or reading or at the bar or whatever, why on earth would it bother him if she takes 10 mins away from him?

If your husband literally cannot sit for 10 mins alone then that is really controlling and quite concerning.

If you are on holiday and your partner pops back to the room for 10 mins do you tell them they cant? do you tell them off for it? do you demand they cant leave your side?

She literally says ‘ if we go back to the room to freshen up’. No suggestion she’s popping back multiple times.

It reads like he’s just not happy with how she’s spending that time.

Of course mine could sit for ten mins alone - and happily sits on the balcony with a beer while I get ready in the evening. But if I was wanting to go back to our hotel room for ten mins every time we’d had, breakfast, after lunch, before we went for a walk I can imagine he’d be like “come on love get out and enjoy the sun!” I’d be the same if he had to go back to the room every couple of hours because he wanted to do his hair.

That’s why I was asking if the OP is meaning he’s annoyed that she takes time getting ready in the morning / evening, or if he’s a bit fed up she’s constantly popping back to the room.

Thats not what is happening though is it?

They are BOTH going to the hotel room to freshen up apparently, he's just getting pissy about what she's doing in the room which is out of order, rude and horrible behaviour on holiday when you are meant to be relaxing and enjoying yourself
