Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:35

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

I take at least an hour and half to get ready even on holiday, my partner 10 minutes max! He has never commented and just does something while I'm getting ready, like pouring me a glass of wine! Its my routine and has been for well before I met him. He's never made a comment. Tell him to get lost, I'm sure he has lots of habits that irritate you too.

Is it really 10 minutes though? ‘A few curls’ will easily take 10 minutes and probably closer to 20 minutes - on its own. My mother is like this - always primping herself. What she thinks is 10 minutes is actually closer to 40 minutes. Luckily she gets up at 5am to start prettifying herself, and all her equipment is in a special cupboard in her bathroom.

Just tell your DH to go down without you and he can have a drink while he’s waiting.

This is what I was going to say.

A quick touch up is fine, but how long and how often is DH actually being made to sit there? It's supposed to be a holiday, do you really need to retouch multiple times?

MiddleAgedDread · 22/07/2026 20:31

I can safely say I have never touched up my make up or put a few curls in my hair, if anything I’m usually waiting on him to do his ablutions in the bathroom.

Having to constantly sit waiting for someone can be extremely frustrating
irrespective if it’s in the room or downstairs in bar he’s still hanging about waiting I think it would start to piss me off

So, at no point during her day is she allowed to do anything for herself? She has to follow him around because he has decided that he wants to do things at specific times? Why does he get to set the schedule every day?

Also, if he allowed her to turn on the light when she gets up, rather than only letting her turn on a light 10 minutes before they’re due to leave, he wouldn’t have to wait for her.

I swear to god that if the OP had said “My DH forbids me from reading / popping into a shop to buy some postcards / stopping to take a couple of photos on holiday” nobody would be taking his side. But because it’s makeup and hair she likes, suddenly it’s OK to shit on her for it. Pure misogyny.

LivelyJadeLeader · 22/07/2026 20:34

If my husband is ready in the evening and I’m still getting ready, he takes the kids down to the bar and leaves me to it.
He doesn’t need to be in the room, bored waiting for you.
I have a full shower, hair wash, dry, straighten and make up in the evenings on holiday, I get it done in about 30 minutes which I think is fair.

“cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most”

In what way is doing this before going out an obsession?

Putting make up on everyday and wanting to touch it up is an obsession to me.

And how on earth does cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing hair and reapplying deodorant take 10 mins? Those are 60 second jobs... unless you're obsessed.

TerfOnATrain · 22/07/2026 20:41

This is too complex. “What time we going out tonight?” “Let’s aim for 7:30”

me, shower at 6:30, washes hair, bit of make up, ready for 7:10 when I lay on the bed and a scroll until leave time.

DH, shower at 7:15, shave, bit of hair gel, quick check of work emails, ready at 7:28.

I don’t get the issue OP.

Yes, specifics needed. He might BU. It's also possible based on what you've written that it's you being the irritating one if you want to fuck about for 10 minutes several times throughout the day.

You ask why he couldn't go on his phone, but that's not the only option. Would you be ok with him going and doing something else until such a time as you've finished your touch ups?

21ZIGGY · 22/07/2026 20:43

Put the fucking light on!

Forbids🤬

Branleuse · 22/07/2026 20:44

He only gets up 10 mins before leaving, and that's your only opportunity??

Whats he normally like towards you?

noworklifebalance · 22/07/2026 20:44

I want to say YANBU and you should be able to get ready how you want etc etc and
Anyone can in theory should be able to take ANY length of time to get ready if they want and touch up their hair, make up, sit on the loo etc for as long as they want but I would find this insufferable

💯 mumsnet has a huge issue with makeup and any other silly girl things.

Pick me girls are the worst flavour of misogyny.

Pistachiocake · 22/07/2026 20:50

Sounds like my hairdresser! Except she was complaining that the girls (her word) she holidays with always fall out with her because she takes ages messing around.
Do like she does, tell him/them to meet you.

rwalker · 22/07/2026 20:52

Honeyhonayboo · 22/07/2026 20:22

She doesn’t need to be available to him 24 hours a day. It doesn’t matter if she was doing her makeup, having a shower, taking a nap or reading a book. She was busy and she’s allowed to not centre herself on his husband for every waking minute of her holiday.

I get that but it does impact on the person just have to sit and wait
I think I can just relate to when your partner smokes and your having to hang about waiting whilst they nip off for 5 minutes

Yeah this might be the best idea. Rather than him hurrying her and her thinking he should play on his phone whilst she touches up, maybe the best thing would be Option C. He agrees he's going to the pub next door/gallery across the road/beach to get on with his holiday, and she can see him there when she's ready.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/07/2026 21:02

Dh couldn't give a shit. He'll watch tv, doom scroll or read while I get ready

orangegato · 22/07/2026 21:03

Is he your owner or something? Sounds a right controlling twat. I would not be getting hurried along by this creep, who is he to dictate that you owe him the 10 minutes? It’s your life?

BabarEnFamille · 22/07/2026 21:06

My DH would get a bit impatient (as would I) if we were leaving for work, or had to meet someone but not otherwise. And on holiday, fixing when to leave and fussing about a time to go out in the evening would be unheard of - you’re there to relax so if one of us wasn’t ready, the other would read for a bit, or have a drink.
That chilling in the hotel time, between day and evening should be lovely, and part of the fun whether it’s a sun holiday or active city break etc

IPM · 22/07/2026 18:54

The 'forbids' was probably just to get MNetters onside and rile us all up so we say YANBU I think.

I’m actually team DH on the forbidding. I too would forbid someone turning the lights on when I’m trying to sleep insofar as I’d be pretty angry if they did it, it’s disrespectful.

Sweetdreamsbeautifulnightmare · 22/07/2026 21:07

Tell him to go fuck himself!

Not being bothered with make up is the opposite of being ‘pick me’. It’s about being happy in your own skin without extra paint.

Same, that's taking the piss. The person who needs lots of things to get ready should ensure they're in the bathroom already before everyone goes to sleep.

canthavetoomanylights · 22/07/2026 17:37

You lost me at ‘forbids’. No man would forbid me from doing what I wanted.

My thoughts too. My husband first get to ‘forbid’ anything!

Feelinghothothothot · 22/07/2026 17:38

Ten minutes seems a long time just to retouch eyeliner and brush your hair but he shouldn’t be angry about it. What is his problem?

It seems a long time to me too. But he should just put up with it.

Literally proving the point.

It’s not the make up, is the constant little jabs from posters like you trying to put yourself on a pedestal above women who engage in frivolity like makeup.

Pick me, I’m not like those other girls who slather paint on their faces!
