Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

I'd encourage him to go without you and say 'see you in the bar' or 'meet you by the pool' or whatever. He can go and get himself a drink while he's waiting. I would also not put the light on in the bedroom while my DH is asleep. I almost always get up before him and sort my clothes out in our spare room so I can get ready in the morning without waking him up. Just respecting our differences really!

Fiftyandnotsonifty · 22/07/2026 19:23

I’d be telling him to fuck off!

You lost me at ‘forbids’. No man would forbid me from doing what I wanted.

This
he sounds a control freak and no doubt this is the tip of the iceberg and the least of your problems!
get rid of this man!

This won’t be popular and while it’s unreasonable for him to nag you. It would annoy me hanging about while someone did their face every verse end. Wear your make up but I wouldn’t expect anyone to hang about while it perfected myself and I would see it as wasting time while I was sat waiting g for you to do curls and eye liner. May be have a few days without it and see how things change, you might even prefer it not having to ‘redo’ yourself after every swim!

Why do you need to be hanging about? What's it got to do with you if someone you're away with wants to pop back to their room for any reason?

PS5Gamer · 22/07/2026 19:27

Another day on Mumsnet, another Dickhead husband. Switch the light on, and tell him to get up and shut the fuck up.

CoralDreamer · 22/07/2026 19:27

Could he not go back down to the pool and wait for you? Could you go up to the room 10 mins earlier so he isn’t waiting? I take longer than DH to get ready of an evening so I go up to the room 30 mins before everyone else. He’s normally still waiting for me but he’ll sit on the balcony with a beer and isn’t bothered about it. Holidays should be a chilled out time, not bickering over the time it takes to get ready.

username2185 · 22/07/2026 19:27

Why can’t he go back down to sunbathe or whatever himself? Why does he need to wait.

also if this was my husband I’d tell him to FO 😂

Flyingdolphins · 22/07/2026 19:28

Any man who 'forbids' would not be my husband in the first place.

Absolutely. Why on earth do some women put up with men like this? The first time would be the last for me.

mondaytosunday · 22/07/2026 19:31

What’s the rush? You’re on holiday! He needs to chill out.

What? It's her face and hair. Her choice. He doesn't need to "hang around". Heaven forfend a grown man can either occupy himself for 10 mins or go down to the pool or wherever.
He's rude and controlling.

Andshesoffatatrot · 22/07/2026 19:34

Can’t he go down to the bar or whatever if he’s that impatient.

Id tell him fuck off

Oh get over yourself, she obviously isn’t making him accompany her to the room to wait on her reapplying makeup after every swim 🙄

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 22/07/2026 19:38

I think it's weird wearing that much make up

ClayPotaLot · 22/07/2026 19:39

He doesn’t have much patience or flexibility. But maybe you’re just not that compatible?

It seems odd if it’s just when you’re on holiday. I could see finding an obsession like this annoying if it’s a constant and important focus, to be honest. And I find an obsession with looks unattractive anyway. But I don’t know why it would only show up on holiday.

Mascara? That's not much.

BillieWiper · 22/07/2026 19:41

Why can't he just wait for you at the bar, by the pool, in the foyer, at a place outside you've agreed to go to? He doesn't have to come up to the room and sit there waiting for you while you do your makeup and hair surely?

And I'd just touch up my mascara or lipliner using a compact or in the toilets of wherever we were.
I guess I don't wear makeup on holiday so I'm the wrong person to advocate for it?

But he's no right to forbid you from doing anything and sounds like a twat.

Can he not entertain himself? Does he need to follow you around everywhere unnecessarily, only to criticise your every move? Yeah that is what a twat would do.

Gemkarzac12345 · 22/07/2026 19:44

Your on holiday and should be able to take as long as you need to freshen up etc. Maybe ask him to wait outside or at the bar or lobby or similar if at all hotel. Sounds very controlling.

WonsWoo · 22/07/2026 19:44

DH and discovered a long time ago that the way to avoid arguments was to agree what time we were going out and anything that happened up to that point was irrelevant to the other person as long as we were both ready at the agreed time.

redskyAtNigh · 22/07/2026 19:45

I don't really understand the issue.

Are you insisting you must go back to the room to "freshen up" when you're not really anywhere near your room so the issue is really about having to break off whatever you were both doing and coming back at all? If so, I'm with your husband that this is ridiculous.

Or have you gone back to the room for a break, but only starting redoing your makeup at the point where he's ready to go out - in which case, just do it as soon as you get back so you're not keeping him waiting?

Honeyhonayboo · 22/07/2026 19:49

“cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most”

In what way is doing this before going out an obsession?

SuchiRolls · 22/07/2026 19:50

Surely you do the same at home so it can’t be a great big shock to him. It would piss me right off if we were on holiday and he was rolling out of bed and out the door tbh, but I wouldn’t say anything just as I wouldn’t except my husband to verbalise everything I did was annoying him when we’re on holiday and should be relaxing. If your idea of that is feeling good about yourself then that’s all that’s important. 10 mins is hardly a long time is it. Fuck off is a complete sentence.

Franjipanl8r · 22/07/2026 19:53

Either he’s an arsehole or you just aren’t compatible. My DH would kick up a fuss if I suddenly spent a lot of time doing my hair and makeup (which I never would as I’m a total scruff bag like him).

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 22/07/2026 19:56

I wouldn’t enjoy going on holiday with this man I’d rather go alone or with friends

arethereanyleftatall · 22/07/2026 19:56

People are getting hung up on ‘forbid’. But I think the op just means that he’s still asleep so she doesn’t switch the bedroom light on but rather the bathroom light to get ready. All normal and polite when someone is still asleep.
