AIBU to think guests should strip the bed before leaving?

I need clarity after the social conventions thread as everything I thought I knew is apparently wrong.... So.

Guests should always strip the bed when staying over at someone's house.

AIBU?

YABU - it's annoying, please leave the bedding on, the host will do it when they want to

YANBU - yes, it's rude to expect the host to do it and polite for the guest to do it

Not once in my life have I ever done this

Nor has any guest staying at my house done it

youngestisapsycho · 17/07/2026 10:36

I ask the host… and do as they reply. Sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say to leave it 🤷🏼‍♀️

HeatwaveHoratio · 17/07/2026 10:37

Neither, you ask the host and then do as directed

Iloveeverycat · 17/07/2026 10:37

No, wouldn't even think of it or expect it.

MotherofPufflings · 17/07/2026 10:37

Yes, ask the host. My mum says not to because she leaves them on for other guests if we "know each other well" 🤯🤣

hamnish · 17/07/2026 10:38

I ask, and am happy to do it, but not every host wants their old mattress protector/slightly manky mattress/pillows laid bare for inspection. It also creates a pile of laundry that has to be tackled then and there, when they might prefer to leave it till the weekend.

bilbodog · 17/07/2026 10:38

I always tell my guests to leave it as i will do it when im ready to put the washing straight in the machine - which could be a few days later.

i always ask if im a guest.

7238SM · 17/07/2026 10:38

I ask the host. I wouldn't just do it automatically.

I recall a thread just like this and the guest stripped the bed, to find a large, red stain under the mattress protector- so re made the bed to avoid embarrassing the host 😬

DelurkingAJ · 17/07/2026 10:39

No, in our house the cats will then sleep on the bed so I either have to change it a second time for the new guests or the cats sleep on the uncovered bed, which is equally bad.

FinallyHere · 17/07/2026 10:39

As in pretty much every circumstance, the sensible and yes ‘polite’ solution is to ask the host what they want done with the bedding.

I prefer it left on the bed until I’m ready to wash it. There isn’t anywhere convenient for used bedding to be left, much better leave it on the bed for a few hours and then straight into the washing machine.

Politeness, good manners they are all about making ease between people. Doing guess or assume everyone thinks the same. Just ask.

SJM1988 · 17/07/2026 10:39

For me it depends, I don't at my parents house but do elsewhere. My parents do it at home house though. Its just the pattern we have got in.
90% of the time you need to do it at an airbnb so got into the habit of just doing it when we book somewhere.

TheDogsMother · 17/07/2026 10:41

No I do not want guests to strip the bed. We have an annexe Airbnb and some times the white bedding requires ‘spot cleaning’ before being sent to the laundry. I wouldn’t want our house guests to do it either. They are our guests and not here to do housework.

Clonakilla · 17/07/2026 10:44

For those who ask - surely nobody ever ever says ‘yes please strip the bed and while you’re at it clean the toilet and empty the bins to a guest in their home??

Goodness.

INX · 17/07/2026 10:44

I don't know why adults don't use words and ask their hosts which of the two options they'd prefer.

If you're close enough to someone to stay overnight in their house, surely you can say "Oi Barbara/Bob, which would you prefer?"

INX · 17/07/2026 10:47

A simple yes or no would be quite common I amongst friends I think.

No-one would be requested to clean the toilet and empty the bin.

FlatCatYellowMat · 17/07/2026 10:49

My mum always would, until I asked her not to because of the cats (same as PP) I try to keep the door shut so they don't get in, but sometimes it gets left open - especially if guests are around, and it's better if there's a fully made bed in there. I'll take the bedding off and put a massive bedspread on until I can wash it and put it back.

AirborneElephant · 17/07/2026 10:52

Leave it on, unless you’re asked to strip it. Incredibly annoying to have a guest strip it off, generally the last thing I want to do immediately after guests is a big load of washing.

travailtotravel · 17/07/2026 10:54

The social norm is to ask your host ... would you like me to strip the bed. Some say yes, others no cos the dig likes to sleep in it etc.

LlynTegid · 17/07/2026 10:54

Ask/offer so not automatically. The observation about a cat (or dog) jumping on the bed is a valid one.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/07/2026 10:56

I prefer guests to leave the bedding on so I can wash it when I want to rather than right away.

CypressGrove · 17/07/2026 11:05

I'd prefer guests didn't- prefer to do it in my own time closer to when the next guests is coming. And sometimes its the same guest so I don't even have to!

EverMissWicklowSometimes · 17/07/2026 11:08

I would never strip the bed in someone else's house. Any time I've asked if I should, they say to leave it.

SomehowItsMay · 17/07/2026 11:09

I think the reason I don't ask, is because if someone asked me I'd say 'oh no don't worry about it' because it would feel unreasonable, even though I would prefer if they did.

I guess that's a me problem though.

I will take this onboard... The older I get the more I discover that quite a lot of my ways are a bit weird. I didn't realise when we were growing up that my mum (and the way she did things) was very 'unusual' and have just got a lot of her ways by default!

YABU it's totally annoying and actually creates work for me as a host.

The cat sleeps on our guest bed between visitors so we leave the bedding on otherwise it needs changing twice before the next guest. Plus I combine it with the bedding from my bed when it comes to laundry loads, so would strip both at the same time.

Ask your host if you feel you must.

Snufkin88 · 17/07/2026 11:17

That’s insane . I’d think someone was a weirdo if they stripped the bed after staying at my house . Is this cos of all the air bnbs that make you do it or what ?
