AIBU to think guests should strip the bed before leaving?

I need clarity after the social conventions thread as everything I thought I knew is apparently wrong.... So.

Guests should always strip the bed when staying over at someone's house.

AIBU?

YABU - it's annoying, please leave the bedding on, the host will do it when they want to

YANBU - yes, it's rude to expect the host to do it and polite for the guest to do it

Always ask. But I would never just strip someone else’s beds. It would be very rude and invasive.

CaurnieBred · 17/07/2026 11:20

Always ask but, if told to leave it on, then make the bed up. I hate it when guests leave it unmade

The social norm is to ask your host ... would you like me to strip the bed. Some say yes, others no cos the dig likes to sleep in it etc.

I live in Ireland and it’s certainly not the social norm here to ask . They would look at you like you had 2 heads I would say .

PorkPieForStarters · 17/07/2026 11:21

I'd always ask if I was a guest at someone else's house, and be happy to do as directed.

At mine, I'd usually say no if asked as it looks better made and I may not get round to washing it straight away or may want to wait for a day when I can hang it out, or if my guest has stayed a night or two and will be the next person staying in it I'd wash it after their next stay. I'd feel happier asking family and close friends to strip it than I would people I'm not close to, but I don't generally have people I'm not close to to stay.

I wouldn't expect anyone to offer or feel negatively if they didn't, and I've never known anyone to automatically do it.

HeatwaveHoratio · 17/07/2026 10:37

Neither, you ask the host and then do as directed

Agreed.

mindutopia · 17/07/2026 11:22

No, it’s weird. I don’t want someone’s dirty bedding just chucked on the floor for me to deal with. I’ll deal with it when I’m ready to wash the bedding.

Moltenpink · 17/07/2026 11:23

No, I would hate it if a guest did this. I leave the used bedding on and only change it before a new guest. The mattress is also old and shabby, although perfectly comfortable!

Moveoverdarlin · 17/07/2026 11:24

Do not touch the bedding!! I will strip the bed when I want to wash it. I also don’t want guests seeing the ever so slightly stained mattress! I don’t want that interference. Just make the bed like a normal guest and back off the stripping. It would really piss me off actually and I’d probably put it all back on and wash it before my next visitor.

Backedoffhackedoff · 17/07/2026 11:24

No and neither would I ask

PandorasBoxers · 17/07/2026 11:24

I normally offer or do this however as someone with pets, I’d rather make up the bed my guest has slept in so that if my pets go on the bed, it’s not messing it up. Then I air it out and make it closer to the time.

Waterbaby41 · 17/07/2026 11:25

Very rude to just assume your host wants the bed stripped.
As most people have said - just ask her host and act on her wishes.

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 17/07/2026 11:25

I don’t want guests to strip the bed as I won’t usually wash it immediately, it will happen the following weekend.

Anothernameretired · 17/07/2026 11:26

Clonakilla · 17/07/2026 10:44

For those who ask - surely nobody ever ever says ‘yes please strip the bed and while you’re at it clean the toilet and empty the bins to a guest in their home??

Goodness.

I might say, " that would be really kind, thank you. I'm about to do a wash"
Otherwise I'd say no (but I would still strip the bed the second they were gone).

And I'd ask - except in my parents house where I would just do it.

Genevieva · 17/07/2026 11:26

We always ask what our history would prefer.

Moveoverdarlin · 17/07/2026 11:26

hamnish · 17/07/2026 10:38

I ask, and am happy to do it, but not every host wants their old mattress protector/slightly manky mattress/pillows laid bare for inspection. It also creates a pile of laundry that has to be tackled then and there, when they might prefer to leave it till the weekend.

Exactly this. I use mattress protectors on all the beds and wash them regularly but they are stained. I’d be bloody mortified if a guest saw.

This thread has put them fear of god in to me and I may have to visit IKEA this weekend for 4 new mattress protectors.

youngestisapsycho · 17/07/2026 10:36

I ask the host… and do as they reply. Sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say to leave it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Me too. Sometimes I say no because the pets will enjoy sleeping on the duvet and pillows until I change them for the next guests.

Genevieva · 17/07/2026 11:29

NB I only stay with friends / family who would express a preference. Eg my aunt prefers the bed to look nice until her cleaner comes and does it for her. Also my sister and I don’t change sheets every day when alternating in who stays to care for my Dad when my Mum is away for a few nights.

BringBackCatsEyes · 17/07/2026 11:29

TheDogsMother · 17/07/2026 10:41

No I do not want guests to strip the bed. We have an annexe Airbnb and some times the white bedding requires ‘spot cleaning’ before being sent to the laundry. I wouldn’t want our house guests to do it either. They are our guests and not here to do housework.

Airbnb guests aren’t really the same as house guests.
We might think we’re “guests” in an Airbnb but we’re customers really. I think 90% hosts leave instructions and usually it’s to strip the bed.

PerdreLeBleu · 17/07/2026 11:30

DelurkingAJ · 17/07/2026 10:39

No, in our house the cats will then sleep on the bed so I either have to change it a second time for the new guests or the cats sleep on the uncovered bed, which is equally bad.

Exactly this. My cat is under the impression the guest room is his so sleeps on the bed. If a guest is coming I wash all the bedding or replace with new bedding and keep the door shut until guest arrives and uses bed. Bedding remains for cat usage after they’d left. I’d be really annoyed if someone stripped the bed forcing me to the laundry there and then.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 17/07/2026 11:30

Well I think if I had a choice I would prefer if a guest made up their own bed! (half joking I hate making beds). But no I would not expect or want a guest to strip the bed.

MagnusSkipton · 17/07/2026 11:30

Ask the host - my preference is for guests to leave them on as the sheets act as dust covers and also means that if a cat gets into the guest room (they walk through walls to do it, I swear) I don't have to strip clean sheets if my allergic family members sleep over.

SpreadsheetLife · 17/07/2026 11:30

I would never expect a guest to strip a bed and tbh it would really annoy me if they did. I then have a big pile of laundry that needs to be dealt with rather than being able to get to it in my own time.

I'm not a guesthouse with strict turnover times.

Me too, seems wise

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 17/07/2026 11:31

It wouldn't even occur to me. I would never expect a guest in my house to strip the beds after staying.

I don't strip the beds in accommodation I am paying for even when instructed. Build the job it into the price!
