AIBU to think guests should strip the bed before leaving?

I need clarity after the social conventions thread as everything I thought I knew is apparently wrong.... So.

Guests should always strip the bed when staying over at someone's house.

AIBU?

YABU - it's annoying, please leave the bedding on, the host will do it when they want to

YANBU - yes, it's rude to expect the host to do it and polite for the guest to do it

You should never ever strip someone’s bed without asking, thays so rude.

i always ask as i know some like it done. I can’t recall anyone ever saying yes please.

i do not wish someone to do this in my home and would be annoyed if they did. I will change my beds in my own time, not my guests.

Strawberrydelight78 · 17/07/2026 12:08

I’ve never done it when staying at someone’s house. But always do when we’ve stayed in a hotel or Airbnb or caravan. It only takes a minute or 2. I know the cleaners don’t have long to clean. I also empty bins wipe sides down.

HeatwaveHoratio · 17/07/2026 10:37

Neither, you ask the host and then do as directed

This!

Switcher · 17/07/2026 12:09

Unless there has been a major glitch, (in which case I strip them and apologise), I always ask.

SomehowItsMay · 17/07/2026 11:09

I think the reason I don't ask, is because if someone asked me I'd say 'oh no don't worry about it' because it would feel unreasonable, even though I would prefer if they did.

I guess that's a me problem though.

I will take this onboard... The older I get the more I discover that quite a lot of my ways are a bit weird. I didn't realise when we were growing up that my mum (and the way she did things) was very 'unusual' and have just got a lot of her ways by default!

You are even more unreasonable for lying to your guests about what you expect of them. Especially if they’re bothering to ask/offer.

You’re setting yourself up for a lifetime of frustration by not just saying “yes, thanks that would be helpful” if that’s what you really want. You’re making your guests think you’re the kind of person who wants it leaving (like most people).

Rocknrollstar · 17/07/2026 12:12

I’m always grateful if guests do this but I always ask before I do it if I’m staying in someone else’s house.

The really polite thing to do is to ask one's host if they would like you to strip the bed.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/07/2026 12:16

Of course, I just can't help myself.

I even do it in Department Stores
(except John Lewis, as I am now banned from there.😩)

PeonyBulb · 17/07/2026 12:17

No one strips the bedding when they’re guests at someone’s house that’s just weird. No one does that or is expected to do that.

TheChaffinch · 17/07/2026 11:47

I think we need more examples of your mum's mad ideas!

No I would prefer guests did not strip the bed. I know some holiday rentals expect it and that's another thread, but I may not want the washing that day.
Also the cat might end up on the uncovered duvet, he's not allowed upstairs but occasionally pushes his luck.

Things like a Christmas tree cannot go up until Christmas Eve - and Christmas presents absolutely must not be opened until after Christmas lunch.

Watching television is lazy. All days should involve hard work (including on the weekend - and including when her 40 year children come back to visit, we are expected to do 'hard work' on the house/garden etc).

And it's rude to speak any louder than very very quietly (she spent all my teenage years telling me 'don't shout!!' /implying that the making of any noise ever is very rude). The result was that I spoke so quietly as a young adult that people were forever saying they couldn't hear me, and it left me with a big self-conscious problem!

Many, many more. She's gone through life saying the wrong thing and alienating potential friends/is left without many friends though which is a bit sad (but I can see why).

I prefer it to stay on. I don't want to put down fresh bedding until people are ready to stay over again. It will get sat on by people, cats sleeping on it, general dust etc so it won't be nice and clean and fresh. I hate having a bare bed, and I don't see the point of putting on new bedding that gets changed again before someone stays due to the above.

The easiest solution is to just leave it and swap the day before someone new comes.

ACR7 · 17/07/2026 12:20

I would think it really rude and odd. I often don’t change the bedding until near the time I have a new guest. You’d be forcing me to either do the washing straight away or have my cat mess the mattress up which then creates more work. Just make the bed and leave it neat.

comfyshoes2022 · 17/07/2026 12:21

If someone asks me, I would say no out of politeness but I’d rather them do it to save me the work. It’s like if someone asked if I’d like them to do the dishes, I’d say no, but if they just went and did it, I’d be thrilled.

QueenCamillaMW · 17/07/2026 12:24

I've only ever done it when staying on a sofabed in my SILs living room. She went to work before we left so we stripped the bed and returned the sofabed back to a sofa.

Otherwise I wouldn't unless asked to.

IsItSnowing · 17/07/2026 12:24

I always ask guests to leave it. I'd rather it stayed on the bed and I'll deal with it myself when I'm ready.
I don't every strip the bed when a guest at someone's house, never been asked to and none of those people do it when they come to us so I guess we're all on the same page.
I've been to air bnbs where they ask for it. I'll do it then but I don't really appreciate it. I don't go on holiday to do the housekeeping myself.

Octavia64 · 17/07/2026 12:26

I fucking hate people who do this. I wash bedding much later when I’ve got time.

Fifthtimelucky · 17/07/2026 12:26

I agree. Ask host if they would like you to strip the bed, and then act accordingly!

I can't see how doing any of that apart from emptying the bin will save the cleaners any time. They're going to wipe up anyway and you can't tell by looking if someone has cleaned before you unless it's not been cleaned for weeks on end or if the occupant is very messy, which most won't be.

Plus it's probably quicker to just pull the sheets off the bed into their bags/trolley than it is to gather them up off the floor, especially if they're supposed to check them for stains or damage.

I'm glad most people don't think guests should strip beds because I was starting to think I was the odd one for not liking this done, because to me, it creates an imposition in that the washing now needs to be done instead of being able to leave it until it's convenient.

BillieWiper · 17/07/2026 12:28

I didn't really know this was a thing. My mate stayed two nights and stripped the bed. I was like, 'whhhhaaat?! I wasnae gonna change it after one use!' She was very clean obviously and the covers were fresh on the day she arrived.

So I kinda thought I don't actually think these need washing but I'll have to now! But I knew she was just being helpful.

Obviously if another guest came I'd change it but I sometimes sleep there myself and I am not that fussy!

Yetone · 17/07/2026 12:29

I don’t want the bedding on the floor. My guest room is also where I usually keep things I don’t have a home for so when the guest leaves I am ready to move the stuff back in. I will do the bedding at my leisure.

pillorinjection · 17/07/2026 12:29

Wouldn’t occur to me

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/07/2026 12:30

Neither. Use your words and ask the host.

redannie18 · 17/07/2026 12:30

My SIL alwasy strips the beds when she stays and I find it SO annoying but she thinks she is being helpful. I often end up putting that same bedding BACK ON the bed, because I'd rather put the fresh bedding on directly before the next guest comes.

Yetone · 17/07/2026 12:31

MotherofPufflings · 17/07/2026 10:37

Yes, ask the host. My mum says not to because she leaves them on for other guests if we "know each other well" 🤯🤣

Yuck. Yes my mother used to do this. We never stayed.
