AIBU to think guests should strip the bed before leaving?

I need clarity after the social conventions thread as everything I thought I knew is apparently wrong.... So.

Guests should always strip the bed when staying over at someone's house.

AIBU?

YABU - it's annoying, please leave the bedding on, the host will do it when they want to

YANBU - yes, it's rude to expect the host to do it and polite for the guest to do it

YANBU

No! Id find it a pain if they did this. Ill change it when its convenient

Dolphinnoises · 17/07/2026 14:18

I hate it when guests do it. I make up the bed with fresh linen just before they arrive, I don’t expect them to sleep in a dusty bed (I’m allergic to dust mites which might colour my view on this!)

The social norm is to ask your host ... would you like me to strip the bed. Some say yes, others no cos the dig likes to sleep in it etc.

The social norm is absolutely not to do this. The correct behaviour is to not mention it all and the host will take care of it as they choose.

FunnyOrca · 17/07/2026 14:21

I have always asked, “Would you like us to strip the bed? Where would you like the towels?”

Saying that, the last time my in laws stayed their train got cancelled and we had put all their bedding in the wash! I’m never starting the load again until I know the visitors have departed!

No, in our house the cats will then sleep on the bed so I either have to change it a second time for the new guests or the cats sleep on the uncovered bed, which is equally bad.

Yes, bedding gets done last here because the cat would get it - our house is also for sale, so we need the beds dressed, and a quick turnaround of the best bedding would be fucking annoying!

Whynottryagain · 17/07/2026 14:47

I rent my spare room on Airbnb. Only one guest in three years has striped the bed, and I prefer them not to, which is why I don't ask them to.

Unless I'm asked explicitly I don't.

But I'm aware that some people do, so wouldn't be surprised or offended or anything.

Stripping the bed is normal social etiquette so should always be done unless the host says otherwise.

it’s gross to expect someone else to tend to your bed linen.

Given that 88% of the vote says otherwise, no it's not the normal social etiquette.

BEAchDays2 · 17/07/2026 15:01

Goodness, no, massive overstep. Just make the bed.

Pistachiocake · 17/07/2026 15:03

This is top of the "most annoying hotel guests" if you've ever worked in housekeeping.
You're talking about private homes. It would slightly annoy me because I want to clean and vacuum first, probably my cleaning supplies on the bed, so if you've stripped it, I'd not be able to without putting said cleaning stuff directly on the duvet/matress. I might not have time to change the beds the day you leave, so you've left the room more untidy than it should be.
And some people think it looks passive aggressive, as if you're pushing the hostess/not trusting them to do it.

gannett · 17/07/2026 15:13

Never done it, never been asked to do it, never had it done by guests. Don't care either way. In fact I don't think the bed linen has ever been brought up in conversation either as guest or host, and I certainly haven't spent any more time thinking about it.

People who have strong opinions on this must be awfully dull. Think about literally anything else instead, it doesn't matter.

MotherofPufflings · 17/07/2026 10:37

Yes, ask the host. My mum says not to because she leaves them on for other guests if we "know each other well" 🤯🤣

I think this is taking things a bit far and is a bit grim. I would not wish to sleep in second-hand bedding however well I knew the previous occupants of the bed. I, personally, would always strip the bed in someone else's house unless asked otherwise. However, most people will strip the bed after staying in my house but I am not fussed if they don't.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 17/07/2026 15:39

Nope. They are guests, not users of an air b n b. Providing clean bedding is my job as host, and stripping the bed and replacing it is also my responsibility. I have never had a guest strip the beds before leaving. Once or twice one has asked if I would like them to, but I’ve always declined. Also don’t expect them to wash up or anything else, though, while they stay. Think it’s rude to arrive empty handed (no one ever has).

LoftyPlumLion · 17/07/2026 16:02

They are a guest. I would not expect them to strip the bed. And to be honest stripping the bed is a 3 minute job so not really helping in the grand scheme of things.

I'd rather they did my tax return, would I be unreasonable for asking them to do some of my tax return? They could sort and catalogue some reciepts.

handsdownthebest · 17/07/2026 11:40

No. My guests have literally just left. I didnt want them to strip the beds ( three kind sized) as I will do it in my own time. It would stress me to have all the at bedding to wash 😁
I never ask guests to strip the beds before they leave.

Thd beds are stripped, linen folded and placed in a neat pile on the bed. No one says you have to wash it immediately.

mondaytosunday · 17/07/2026 16:35

I always ask if they’d like me to strip the bed.

MsFogi · 17/07/2026 16:52

If you took a unilateral decision to strip the bed in my house I would consider it extremely rude and not invite you back.

MyAgileUser · 17/07/2026 16:55

I always strip it at my husband’s aunt’s house after i realised that the sheets are usually left on for the next guest. So I strip with a big helpful smile.
Everywhere else - ask.

It’s her house! You don’t strip someone’s beds unless you ask, no more than your clean their fridge or start rearranging their cupboards, how rude.

But I do have to put new bedding on immediately, otherwise it'll get dusty, the cat will sit on it, someone could spill something on it.

BauhausOfEliott · 17/07/2026 17:08

You should ask the host, obviously. Making an assumption that what you're doing is going to be helpful, rather than finding out what would actually be helpful, isn't great manners.

This has been the subject of many threads over the years. Some people like to wash the bedding immediately; some people prefer to leave it on until they've got time to put a wash on or whatever. So it's not great to assume the host wants the bed stripped just because you would.

Exactly this - our dogs love snoozing in the spare room so I keep the old sheets on until new guest arrives, then I can just change them and keep the dogs out of the room while they're here (unless they want cuddles of course). If the bed gets stripped when guest leaves just adds annoying pointless laundry as I'll have to change them again before anyone sleeps in them anyway

How did you find that out?

I once realised a friend thought we didn't strip the bed between guests, but in actual fact a have a specific set for the spare bed because it goes with the decor of the room. So it never changes.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 17/07/2026 17:12

I wouldn't expect or want guests to strip the bed and I wouldn't expect to do it when I'm a guest unless specifically asked.
I'd prefer to take the sheets off when guests have gone when I'm actually ready to put them in the wash rather than have them filling the laundry basket.

Happyjoe · 17/07/2026 17:23

I would absolutely hate a guest to strip the bed. It's just wrong.
