Secretly I hate when my friends give up drinking

Not because I want to go in a heavy night out

Not because I think I have any right to tell them what to do

I just don't enjoy their company so much when I'm having a glass of wine and they're having a fizzy water

You don't sound like you're big on nuance

I don't think 'I hate when my friends give up drinking" is quite as nuanced as you think it is.

If there was nuance, it was well camouflaged.

I have just worked out what troubles me about this post. If I had a friend who didn't want to spend time with me unless I was drinking alcohol I'd think that they didn't actually like me.

But what if they felt the same about everyone? OP isn’t singling any non drinker out. She prefers the boozy nights with all her friends, to not having them. It’s not really about you tbh

So sorry but you wont be having any fun today if you arent drinking according to several on this thread!

A total exaggeration, but okay.

its as much about one friend as it is about all of them. If I was one of those friends. I'd no longer wish to be a friend.

God Lord do you imagine yourself to be good company?

Do you consider yourself to be good company?

Well I guess that’s the point isn’t it. The friendship might’ve run its course. It happens.

And again if the reason that somebody no longer wanted to be friends with me was because they didn’t like me when I wasn’t drinking alcohol……not because I was judgy or evangelical about it….but just the fact of not drinking, well I’d consider that a bullet dodged

Yes I'm fucking ace

No big blousey booming voiced slightly missing the point chat over a strong orange squash round my way

So you’re brilliant company without alcohol? So what’s the problem?

Gresley · 18/07/2026 18:53

I think that when I am in a pub and I say I don't drink and people say 'Oh go on!' or look put out, it is because they think I'm criticizing their choice to drink alcohol. I'm not. I just don't like what it does to me. I can't take any without it having a bad effect on me. It makes me stupid. And it makes me say things I later regret, which at the time I think are 'the truth' about people. And I always feel dreadful the next day, even on a tiny amount. I can't even drink a glass of wine without it having a bad effect on me, and I love wine. I can't even touch champagne. Maybe it's an age thing, because I can't drink real coffee any more either. I spent a lot of time drinking to fit in and thank God I no longer feel the need to do that. I also no longer like being around people who are drunk. Unfortunately the culture in Britain is to drink to excess and to be proud about being able to do so. It also makes you fat if you drink a lot. I don't mind being around people who drink a civilised amount and in a civilised fashion, but they're usually the sort of people who don't judge me for not drinking alcohol.

For the record my friends and a I had a lovely time.

To be honest I think a glass of wine is healthier than the way most non drinkers treat themselves (not all, I know).

So are you just trying to see how much you can ramp up how stupid the comments you post are, until people realise your post is a joke one and wasnt serious?

At least that would be less embarrassing.

TheGreatDownandOut · 20/07/2026 18:22

I’m wondering if OP’s friends ordered a tonic water and didn’t tell her it was just tonic water and instead told her it was a G&T whether she would notice…

Of course she wouldn't notice.

She'd only notice if someone ordered orange juice because apparently that transforms people into a "big, blousey, booming-voiced person who misses the point of chats."

Which is a bit odd, considering earlier in the thread she claimed non-drinkers were "stiff and formal," like being at a "day centre in their dotage."

Who knew a glass of orange juice had such spectacular mind-altering powers? 😆

I like wine because I like it. It's fun and alcohol is socially bonding. I am not uncomfortable with it. I just enjoy being with those people less because we're less on the same level. I don't like very heavy drinkers either. Sober beverages just make me feel dysphoric. "Oh here's some mother root".

I like wine because I like it too @CurdinHenry

But, I’m in cancer treatment and can’t drink.

I’d be devestated if my mates didn’t want to go out with me anymore because we are ‘less on the same level’ because they drink and I don’t.

On the other hand, maybe getting the heads up that my ‘friends’ are shallow as fuck would be beneficial…

Givemeausernamepls · 20/07/2026 19:25

I don't drink. Even one glass makes me feel like shit for days - mostly anxiety.

My friend always take the piss out of me for being boring but secretly love having a designated driver... there is never pressure to drink. I'm not a hugely serious person and love a laugh regardless. I never repeat (unless one of them asks what they were doing) what anyone says or does - what happens on girls night... and all that!
