My wife wants to do a couples-style photoshoot with another male model, and I’m struggling with my feelings. Am I being insecure?

This is a complicated situation, so I’ll try my best to explain everything without making it too long.

I'm 45 year older man and my wife is also 45. We have three kids, all teenagers now. After years of raising children and putting most of our energy into parenting, my wife finally has a bit more freedom to focus on herself again.

About a year ago, she started going to the gym, changed her lifestyle, lost weight, and got back into shape. I'm genuinely happy for her because I’ve seen how much confidence it has given her. She feels like she is finding herself again after spending so many years being “mom” first.

For the last 3–4 years, she has talked about wanting to do a boudoir photoshoot for herself. We discussed it a couple of times, but nothing ever happened. It was more of an idea than an actual plan.

My wife is good friends with a professional photographer named Claire She is in her Mid 50s. Claire is extremely talented and has photographed our family many times. She did our wedding photos, baby photos, and family pictures, and because of their friendship, we have always received very generous discounts. She is someone we trust.

A little over a week ago, Claire came to us with an idea for a photography project she is working on for her portfolio and a company.
The concept is about two people in their mid-40s finding love again after losing their spouses. For the project, she wanted my wife to model as one of the people in this story. The shoot would involve my wife wearing a wedding dress, being photographed outdoors (possibly vineyards or scenic locations), and doing normal couple-style poses with a male model who would play the “new husband” character.

There would also be some indoor shots in a hotel suite, still keeping the theme of a newly married couple. Claire described it as romantic, emotional, and.storytelling-focused, with some poses that couples normally do in wedding photography.

She also brought up the idea of doing a separate boudoir photoshoot with my wife in her studio. That one would be completely private and only for my wife herself. It would not be published anywhere.

The wedding-themed photos, however, would be different. Some would appear on Claire’s website and some would be used for the company project.

At first, my wife was hesitant. She worried about people she knows seeing the pictures, what friends and family might think, and whether it could affect her professionally. But after thinking about it, she started feeling proud of herself. She feels like she has worked hard, regained confidence, and wants to celebrate that.

She asked me what I thought. I told her I needed some time because I honestly don’t know how I feel. The private boudoir photoshoot didn’t bother me much. It’s something she wants to do for herself, and I trust her completely. But the wedding photoshoot with another man is where I started feeling uncomfortable.

I know logically it’s just photography. I know it’s a professional model, a professional photographer, and there is no romantic intention behind it.

But emotionally, something about seeing my wife dressed as a bride next to another man, doing couple poses, made me feel uneasy. I can’t even explain it properly. It’s not anger, jealousy, or thinking she would do something wrong. It’s just this weird feeling in my stomach that I can’t shake.

Claire recently sent us the male model’s profile. He is also around his late 40s, a professional model, and honestly a very good-looking guy. He’s fit, has a great physique, and looks confident.

And I hate admitting this, but seeing that made me feel even more uncomfortable.
I feel a little ridiculous because I know this is just a photoshoot. My wife loves me, we have built a life together, and there is no reason to distrust her.

At the same time, I don’t want to ignore my feelings either. I want to support her confidence and not make this about my insecurity.

So I’m asking for outside perspectives

Am I being unreasonable here? Is this just normal jealousy that I need to work through? Or is it fair for me to feel uncomfortable with my wife publicly doing a romantic-style photoshoot with another man?

I want to handle this in a mature way because the last thing I want is for my wife to feel like I’m holding her back after she has finally started feeling good about herself again.

I get it. You and your wife got married and have beautiful photos of that day. Her recreating a wedding (even though it’s pretend) feels uncomfortable.

But the really weird part is the bedroom series of photos. Totally reasonable not to want photos of your wife being kissed and undressed by another man, especially if they will be in the public domain.

To be honest, what business is Claire promoting with these latter shots? Is there a market for having a professional photographer in your suite on your wedding night? 🤮

Sounds like she is trying to get into the by women for women erotica market.

I can really understand the conflict.

On one hand, you recognise that this is a great opportunity and would be fun for her. But at what cost to your peace of mind?

From your description, there are some quite sensual/intimate poses. In your wife's shoes, I'd be flattered and probably OK with wearing a dress and standing with/hugging/gazing at someone but anything more than that and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself. I'm not sure I'd even want to hold hands with someone else if I'm honest! It would feel weird.😁

Has she expressed any feelings about the nature of the photos? Does she actually want to do the photos? Or is she just flattered and excited to have been asked?

At first, she took her time. She didn't say yes immediately. She thought about someone seeing her at work, about me and the kids. She understood the gravity of the situation.

But she also thinks it's a great opportunity for her, and she believes she can do it. She went through everything with Claire, including how the intimate poses would be shooted. So, at no point will she be completely naked with the male model. Her breasts will be covered with nipple pasties, and only the kisses are real. Overall, there is no explicit nudity, so she felt comfortable with it and was flattered by the opportunity.

Of course, she asked for my decision, and I took my time before answering.

It's a modelling job. It may well be her first modelling job but the other bloke in the photos is a professional, the shoot is professional.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 13/07/2026 18:29

it's a great opportunity for her,

A great opportunity to do what exactly? Become a 45 year old glamour model?

Flyingintotheunknown · 13/07/2026 18:32

Personally as an ex pro model myself, I think you are overthinking things.

The male model, if he’s actually a professional mature model, he will most likely have done a lot of similar shoots with female models before. I used to have to pose with male models for shoots to make it look like we were a real couple. We had to hug, hold hands etc. once the shoot is done the male model will go home and your wife will come home to you and that will be the bed of it.

These are not ‘intimate’ photos and she will not be nude. You’re making this sound very sexualised and it’s not. I know the type of shoots you’re talking about. They’re stylised wedding shoots. It’s not about intimacy and another male model being over friendly, it’s about creating a real just married couple “look”, it’s all very acted and fake but made to look real if you get what I mean.

At the end of the day this is hardly some big modelling campaign where your wife’s face is going to be out there on billboards, it’s a small personal project for a local photographer and for her to be able to use the pictures on her website for her portfolio. The shoot is not as “professional” as some posters are making out. I am however, baffled why the photographer has not advertised this project to actual models if she intends to pay. The only answer I can think of for that is that she does not intend to pay very much. However your wife isn’t a professional model so it’s a win win situation. She gets some more experience of being in front of the camera and gets to build her confidence and make a bit of money, the photographer gets some nice pictures to use for her website.
I can understand your concern but it’s really not what you think. The photographer is also not going to make your wife do anything she isn’t comfortable with.

nah it doesn’t. It sounds like she’s a female photographer running a boudoir photography business and wants a few shots of the op’s wife to use on her website as promotional material that’s all. Hardly trying to push her into the erotica market.

100%. Further to this, OP mentioned wife was also worried about her professional reputation as well... which she absolutely SHOULD be (depending on her job) as it's presumed these photos will be used as marketing material for the photographer.

To your point about the cutting room floor (or even the final edits) - who knows where those photos will end up. Wife has a job/career, child(ren) and runs the risk of AI porn images of herself doing the rounds.

It may sound a bit dramatic, but unless she (and the family) is happy with dipping in the world of glamour modelling and soft porn, she's naive to think this runs no risk for her reputation (let alone the dynamics of her marriage) - and probably letting her flattery/esteem issues making judgement calls on her behalf.

As an ex model myself, this is not glamour modelling or soft porn 🤣

It’s boudoir photography. And the photographer wants a photography subject so she can use the pictures on her website to advertise said boudoir photography business. It’s hardly page 3 or youporn material.

Thanks for a good perspective!!

Btw what about intimate shoots, nudity and kiss!! Isn't they are real? How would they shoot those shoots and what's the mechanism behind that

Also isn't it different since my wife is married and not an professional model

Thought you said it didn’t involve actual nudity, just the idea that she looks like she will be nude but with nothing on show. I doubt she’d be getting naked in front of another man. No professional photographer is going to put that sort of pressure on a woman. You haven’t stated where the male model will be when these pictures are being taken? In front of her facing her breasts? If so, I’m sure her dignity will be concealed. Or will he be stood behind her with the back of the dress be exposed and her breasts covered?

As for the kiss? Possibly a bit intimate depending on if it’s a real kiss or made to just look like they’re kissing or a simple quick kiss that could look intimate on camera? Or is it a peck on the cheek?

For some shoots, he will be behind her, unzipping her gown, and her entire back will be exposed.

In another shot, he will be standing in front of her while my wife's gown is pulled down to her waist, leaving her topless.

There will also be some scenes on a bed, with her lying down and him above her. Claire explained that, in these scenes, she will appear naked to the audience, but his hands, arms, or body will always cover the explicit parts of her body.

There will also be shots where his face is against her neck or shoulder.

As for the kissing scenes, Claire said the kisses are real, although I don't know exactly how they will shoot them.

Nah sorry that’s a step too far. Sorry I didn’t realise this. I thought you meant it would have the appearance of nudity but she wouldn’t actually be nude. Even when I was a professional model I never ever posed nude and was never expected to. If your wife is comfortable with this fair enough but you as her husband I completely understand your concern. All this nude stuff is unprofessional and very amateur. This sort of stuff literally does not happen in the professional modelling world. I think the photographer has been seeing too many nude photos taken of amateur models by amateur photographers and seems to think that this is what modelling entails. It isn’t at all.

Also, just to point out that if your wife decided to go ahead with this and the photographer used these pictures on her website, once these pictures are online they’re pretty much out there forever. If she has a career or even just any general job for that matter, I’d be worried about my reputation within the company and bringing that company into disrepute.

Alice786 · 13/07/2026 19:14

I think she needs to consider your feelings and as you feel uncomfortable about it she shouldn't do it. Personally i wouldn't feel right doing it as I'm not a professional model and it's not something you that was discussed or agreed before the marriage. I could never be with with an actor or model where they would be pretending to be intimate with someone else. I think it's normal to feel uncomfortable about it and you shouldn't have to hide your feelings. I think you need to be honest with her about how you feel and let her decide. If she cares about your feelings she wouldn't want you to feel uncomfortable.

Maybe because his wife is a grown adult who doesn't need to be " told no" she can't take a job by her husband.

So her husband should be OK with any job she feels like taking? Prostitute? Hardcore porn photos, etc? Moving away to Australia for work without checking with him it's OK? A marriage is supposed to be a partnership where each partner respects the other.

Surely the whole point of boudoir photography is that it's a woman dressing and looking sultry/sexy on her own - or possibly, if she wanted to take it a stage further, including her husband/partner in some photos. Certainly not a strange man.

Boudoir is not glamour. Glamour is where the photos are intended to appeal to the male gaze ie. Page 3 and all the old lads mags. Boudoir is slightly different as it isn’t intended for the male gaze, it’s more of a confidence builder shoot for a woman so that the woman can feel happy and confident in her own skin, so it’s hardly intended as wank material for other men.

Although after the op’s updates I can’t even state what sort of ‘category’ this “shoot” is supposed to be. It’s just plain weird. Still not glamour or soft porn though but I’d say it’s pretty much on the way there.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 13/07/2026 19:45

It’s just a modelling shoot really isn’t it? But I understand why you feel uncomfortable.

Not the point of the post, but those boudoir shoots are hideous!

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 13/07/2026 19:49

The more I read and think about this, the more it sounds to me like Claire is testing the water and moving slowly, but that her end goal may be several stages further.

Obviously it's far more common to have maile photographers, but how many women who end up doing hardcore porn go straight into it on day one? Of course it's entirely up to the individual how far she (or he) chooses to go, but he route for the majority of them who do end up that way will be standard clothes modelling; then swimwear; then maybe 'glamour; topless shots; then nude; then........ Each stage will be a breaking down that leads 'naturally' to the next stage, with a "Well you happily did X, so Y isn't much different; then you did Y, so why not Z? Come on, you're so beautiful, you look so amazing, you should celebrate your body and your looks."

I know you trust your DW, OP; but I would be aware that where her intentions end and where Claire's intentions end may very well not (currently, at least) be in the same place.

grumpygrape · 13/07/2026 19:50

Okay, as they say on Dragons’ Den, I’ll tell you where I am.

Unusual for a bloke, especially a middle aged one, to come to Mumsnet with such a detailed and well written conundrum.

To be followed up by the biggest drip feed since automatic hanging basket watering was invented.

Too much insistence on there being no trust issues, wonderful marriage, just not wanting to share intimate things publicly. However, no information regarding in-depth discussions with his wife about her motivation, his feelings, her feelings, whether he could or would want to be present at the shoots, and him having discussions with his wife’s long term friend professional photographer.

All posts from an apparently well-heeled, well-educated poster except suddenly the OP can’t get their head round the difference between shoot and shot.

Call me a cynic (grumpygrape – you’re a cynic) but I think this is a load of hot air.

Yes, that's what I meant - but maybe didn't describe very well. Indeed, it's primarily a confidence booster/self celebration for her and maybe additionally a little something that she might want to share with her partner.

It's absolutely not anything that's ever intended to be seen or 'enjoyed' by strangers, or indeed anybody who wouldn't normally be in that bedroom/boudoir already.

Dameputtingonabraveface · 13/07/2026 19:56

If this is actually true, and the roles were reversed, no way would the majority of posters be okay with this scenario. If your wife is model material then she can model through a reputable model agency. As has always been the case, outside of this she needs to be very cautious.

Massive exaggeration talking about prostitution and hardcore porn.
Not the case we're talking about here at all.

And in any healthy marriage there's a MUTUAL respect for each other's feelings and desires.
Husbands don't get to veto their wives opportunities solely on the basis of their own insecurities. It's 2026 not 1826, wives are allowed to decide.
