Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

How would we know?

PurpleLovecats · 30/05/2026 17:25

Sorry, pic wasn’t up when I posted. Looks ok to me.

Notsosweetcaroline · 30/05/2026 17:25

Um not 0ld lady no. Those dresses are quite fashionable now, more that one does nothing for you.

AgentCustard · 30/05/2026 17:26

No you look lovely, nice and cool

What is this supposed to mean? What is a dress supposed to do for her?

Glitchymn1 · 30/05/2026 17:27

Looks fine to me, presume it’s cool and flowing. What’s the issue?

hellospring26 · 30/05/2026 17:27

You need a decent bra, (Please tell me not M&S) the dress isn’t ‘old lady’. Old ladies can wear what they want anyway.

Left · 30/05/2026 17:27

Not really. But it’s hard to tell based on only one outfit.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 30/05/2026 17:27

It’s not old lady, it’s more there could be something out there more flattering for you. I can safely say that dress would do nothing for me and I’m also mid 40’s but might suit some of my friends.

Theresmagicwheretheflowersgrow · 30/05/2026 17:28

Well I'm an old lady and the outfit you have on isn't one I'd wear, but you look perfectly ok to me (but then I'm old so what would I know? )

AddictedToBooks · 30/05/2026 17:29

No you don't dress like an old lady and I actually think you look lovely.

HaroldMeaker · 30/05/2026 17:33

I don’t think you’re dressed like an old lady no, but I can’t see why an old lady couldn’t wear the dress either

PlacidPenelope · 30/05/2026 17:33

What does an old lady dress like?

In my opinion that is not a very flattering ensemble, it is rather dull and boring and doesn't do you any favours but if you like it and feel comfortable in it that is what counts.

SandwichSuperstar · 30/05/2026 17:34

No, it's just a nice run-of-the-mill Summer dress which looks lovely on you.

I'm not really sure what you think 'old ladies' wear though?

I work with an all female team of elderly volunteers and they all wear very different styles, just as people of all ages do.

Allonthesametrain · 30/05/2026 17:34

You look lovely and nice dress xx

likelysuspect · 30/05/2026 17:35

Personally I think dresses like that look frumpy

Octavia64 · 30/05/2026 17:35

It’s not old lady clothes.

it is hanging around the house it’s far too bloody hot clothes.

Ipsevenenabibas · 30/05/2026 17:36

I've never seen an 'old lady' dressed like that.

cheezncrackers · 30/05/2026 17:36

Well, old ladies don't tend to wear spaghetti straps, but they are fond of pastels.

theresnolimits · 30/05/2026 17:36

No one can answer that from one picture in a sundress. I presume someone has said something to you and it’s upset you?

It’s very easy to take criticism badly (I do) but sometimes it’s an opportunity to reflect on yourself. Do you feel your clothes reflect your best you? Is there something you love yourself in - why is that?

The bottom line is that no one’s opinion matters but your own.

ididabigfatsmelly · 30/05/2026 17:36

Basically it’s a new dress I got today so sent a pic to 3 or 4 friends, 2 commented needing a bra, everyone liked apart from this one friend who said I dress like an old lady and as a friend she has seen what I usually wear so other dresses etc she’s obv seen me wearing and apparently I just have old lady taste nowadays

TotalBaloney · 30/05/2026 17:37

It just looks like a normal dress you’d find on the high street at the moment. Not ‘old lady’, no. Where is it from?

Mimilamore · 30/05/2026 17:37

You look fine…. if you like it and are comfortable in it then wear it… at the end of the day people are more worried about themselves to have an opinion on you in your dress…

aintnothinbutagstring · 30/05/2026 17:37

I think it looks nice - its quite casual so possibly not what Id wear to event if thats what you had in mind. Wouldnt suit me because my upper arms cant really carry off strappy dresses and the bra issue would be too much of an inconvenience.
