Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

OP posts:
Malasana · 30/05/2026 19:02

What does an old lady wear. For heavens sake just wear what you like and if you could stop with the old lady negativity at the same time that would be smashing.

Dear God the ageism in this thread is absolutely appalling.

I wish MN would make.ageism a reason for reporting threads.

What does dressing " like an old lady" actually mean? It is absolutely nasty , derogatory language

I'm 74. I don't dress " like an old lady". I dress like " me". How I want to look.
The assumption that old ladies are worthless unsightly, less than human, is absolutely disgusting.

You’re right. I’m in my 50s and noticed more and more the obnoxious ageism on here.

Anonymouseposter · 30/05/2026 19:04

It's a plain summer dress that anyone could wear and it looks fine.
I am older and I wouldn't wear it because I have flabby arms these days, but not all old ladies have that problem.
The OP's friend was rude to her and she obviously meant dressing like an old lady to have negative connotations.
I was reading a thread earlier today asking who was the most stylish person you had ever seen and there were many references to older women so not all old women dress the same. It's the generalising that's slightly offensive.
There do tend to be some styles that are worn by particular age groups but these days people tend to go more with what suits them individually.
Take no notice of your friend OP and wear what you feel suits you best.

Owly11 · 30/05/2026 19:04

No you don't remotely look like an old lady. Your friend is a bitch.

bet you have no problem about the expression "dressed like a teenager"

People only get offended when it touches a nerve!

Nope.

Yeah, or ‘dressed like a toddler’.

TheThirteenthFairy · 30/05/2026 19:09

Why do you send pics for your friends to judge? Please, never do it again. Have you not heard of 'Never ask a question if you don't want to hear the answer.'? PS, if you were actually an old woman you wouldn't be doing this - you would have stopped caring what other people think of you years ago.

NoSourDough2 · 30/05/2026 19:09

Here’s a 60 year old on her style instagram page. Might make you wind your neck in with the ageist comments!;

Wear what you want and don't worry about what other people think. Life's too short. I think you look just fine.

partygarden · 30/05/2026 19:11

Your friends comments are really off. But I will say, seeing as you’ve asked, that this style dress is VERY hard to pull off. Unless you’re small chested and generally very thin (I’m neither btw). You’re got lovely healthy looking skin/ hair and nice shape but the dress isn’t flattering. If you want a randoms opinion, you’d be better off with shirt dresses / nipped in waists/ midi length still/ maybe floaty sleeves/ bolder colours. I had a Quick Look and this is what I mean, you can get similar copies on Vinted for fairly cheap.

or just wear the dress you’ve got and fuck your friends opinions. The dress is fine but like I say, there are more flattering styles out there.

Forgot pic

I’d wear that and I’m 26. Looks comfortable and nice (boobs look great)! Maybe more casual, but definitely not old lady. The stance you’re pulling in the pic does make you look like you’re about to tell me off tho 😭.

BillieWiper · 30/05/2026 19:12

That's a bit ageist to assume older women's wardrobe to be inherently an insult. My mum is in her late 80s and dresses incredibly chic.

If your clothes don't suit you it's nothing to do with age.

Malasana · 30/05/2026 19:12

AgentPidge · 30/05/2026 17:45

No, I don't think you look frumpy.

Old = frumpy? Nice

Wisterical · 30/05/2026 19:15

My 'old lady' friends and I are able to choose clothes that look and feel fantastic. I hope you reach this stage of life too.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 30/05/2026 19:16

I want to ban the word "frumpy". Or dowdy.

This thread is just oozing in misogyny as well as ageism. Dresses have to be flattering, or "do something for you" to be sexually attractive to men and whether something is comfortable or well-made doesn't matter, and neither does whether the woman concerned likes it or not.

"Old Lady" dressing is not a thing.

FFS.

MayCottage · 30/05/2026 19:17

I'd wear this dress and I don't think I am an old lady - it's perfect for the summer 😀

oh please

It's possible for people to want to look nice and to make the most of whatever body shape they have, without being reduced as weak idiots who are after male approval.

Stylish doesn't mean "uncomfortable"

Well you lost your bet. Not quite the aha moment you thought was it?

Greenwitchart · 30/05/2026 19:20

It is rather ageist and frankly daft to suggest that older women can't be stylish, fashionable, elegant and dress well.

CurlewKate · 30/05/2026 19:20

How do “old ladies” dress? Surely it’s just putting clothes on? Just like young ladies and middle aged ladies?

Misogyny?

My OH no longer looks frumpy himself, because Im bossy about what he wears. He looks crisp and funky. Silver fox

Unlike his old man gardening look that he would naturally go for.

I have no idea what you are on about

I am sorry if you take personally the concept of "dressing like an old lady".

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/05/2026 19:23

I don’t see what’s ’old lady’ about that!

Now if you’d been wearing ill-fitting pinky-lilac trousers that weren’t quite long enough, with a beige anorak-y thing…

Aiming4Optimistic · 30/05/2026 19:25

I think that in the past there were styles that we associated more with specific age groups, but that's not do true anymore.
I see women of all ages from teens to 70s wearing pretty summer dresses, the same brands of trainers etc.
Unless you are going for beige slacks and a twin set, I don't think there is 'old lady' anymore!
