Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

Basically it’s a new dress I got today so sent a pic to 3 or 4 friends, 2 commented needing a bra, everyone liked apart from this one friend who said I dress like an old lady and as a friend she has seen what I usually wear so other dresses etc she’s obv seen me wearing and apparently I just have old lady taste nowadays

She's being a bitch !
Friends don't say anything like that !
I think it's a nice simple dress and it would be hard to age anyone wearing it !

I don't think 'old ladies' usually wear dresses that show their bra straps. I'm 71 and have never, would never wear clothes that show my underwear. I would rather wear Bardot style and a strapless bra. I always think that visible bra straps look very poor.

My 72 your old MIL wouldn’t be bothered about showing her bra straps. They’re hardly offensive, just a strip of elastic.

Thanks for all replies, the nice ones in particular . My friend maybe seemed rude but I did ask her to be honest and she gave her honest opinion

dress from m&S

i so wish my boobs were smaller

Well considering how unpleasant your thread is to older women do you think you actually deserve " nice " replies?

FennelGingerJasmineOrMint · 30/05/2026 17:55

No. No ‘old lady’ vibes in that photo. The old (ish - 80+) ladies I know all wear the same sort of clothes. Seasalt/ white stuff dresses, fat face cross body bags and brightly coloured skechers. A million miles away from my nana’s generation, who looked like a cross between Barbara Woodhouse and Hyacinth Bucket.

YourPoliteTurtle · 30/05/2026 17:56

It's a basic casual dress, nothing special as such but you are wearing bracelets, have a nice polish on your feet and colour seems to go well with your colouring from what I can see.

It doesn't fit into the so-called "old lady" category. It's just a summer dress.

Add a fun bag and a hat if you are worried and want to jazz it up.

real friends do give their opinion when they are being asked.

No one is a true friend when they claim something is "lovely" when they think it's bad.

MyIcyHeart · 30/05/2026 18:00

The dress is dull AF and makes you look dumpy round the mid-section.

unsevered67 · 30/05/2026 18:01

I’m another old lady who resents the insinuation that because I’m over 60 I can’t dress nicely or stylishly. Why is casual ageism so acceptable. All you younger women will be my age at some point so you should be helping to get rid of the dreadful stereotypes around older women .
The dress isn’t particularly flattering . It’s ok but you could probably get something much nicer

sunhat100 · 30/05/2026 18:01

The dress is okay for any age, but it does nothing for you at all

YourPoliteTurtle · 30/05/2026 18:02

"old lady" is a style (or lack of), same as "mumsy" is a style, or "frumpy"

Not really related to age itself 😂
and people know exactly what you mean

Johnogroats · 30/05/2026 18:03

The dress is functional. A bit dull. I’m mid 50s and wouldn’t have picked it up in the shop. I don’t think it’s anything to do with age. You look ok in it, but I’d say it’s an inoffensive dress. I’ve got big boobs and find I always look better in a structured dress.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 30/05/2026 18:05

Nothing to do with age. That cool colour is wrong for you. Try it in a warm shade.

researchers3 · 30/05/2026 18:06

Notsosweetcaroline · 30/05/2026 17:25

Um not 0ld lady no. Those dresses are quite fashionable now, more that one does nothing for you.

Harsh.

Jardenalia · 30/05/2026 18:09

It’s a boring dress for someone of any age

Indianajet · 30/05/2026 18:10

cheezncrackers · 30/05/2026 17:36

Well, old ladies don't tend to wear spaghetti straps, but they are fond of pastels.

Well I am 71 and don't like pastels. We are all different.

FancyKeyboard · 30/05/2026 18:10

It's a perfectly fine dress and you look nice.

Vinvertebrate · 30/05/2026 18:12

I don’t think it’s “old lady” but I’m not sure the style or colour is doing much for you. Lots of grey around at the moment but I’ve yet to see anyone on whom it’s a flattering colour.

I wear exclusively Toast these days. My closest friend tells me I dress like an extra from ‘Deliverance’ and makes banjo noises when I enter the room. At lease she’s honest!

RedTreeLeaf · 30/05/2026 18:13

You look beautiful, ignore your mean friends, the dress looks great.

treacletoffee23 · 30/05/2026 18:13

I think you look cool and summery
l would team it with some espadrilles, a shrug or denim jacket if weather cools

TheChosenTwo · 30/05/2026 18:13

Well it’s quite boring and shapeless but I sometimes opt for boring and shapeless too, I don’t think it matters what age you are to be able to wear a dress like that.
You haven’t accessorised it (I don’t accessorise anything, I find it a bit much!) - it looks cool and like it serves a purpose of you not getting too hot.
A lot of people have said it’s not ‘flattering’ and I deduce that it means it’s not pulling you in at the waist or whatever. Not everything has to flatter your figure in order to be able to wear it!!

holdupp · 30/05/2026 18:14

The dress is fine but I think it would look 100 times nicer and more interesting in just about any other colour than grey - it's just a very unsummery colour.

I sympathise OP I am the same as you...slim, but with big boobs. The right bra can make a difference though. Good luck with your bra fitting appointment x

YourPoliteTurtle · 30/05/2026 18:16

Isn't the dress pale blue?

Doesn't look grey on my screen

Noras · 30/05/2026 18:16

You have a large bust so that type of dress is not the most flattering. A v neck or one with a ruffle would suit more

Jellox · 30/05/2026 18:19

Somethingbland · 30/05/2026 17:55

It’s not OP being rude.

Her friends were rude to her, she was just repeating what they said.
