Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

OP posts:

No I haven't read all her posts.

I have been busy starting a thread in Site Stuff about the fact that MN doesnt recognise ageism as breaking Talk Guidelines.

I dont know what else OP has said because I cant get past her appalling and offensive thread title.

FFS you are being ridiculous.

This is what she said:

everyone liked apart from this one friend who said I dress like an old lady

She was quoting her friend.

Perhaps you should read the full thread before commenting, else it just makes you look rude and silly.

I'll never see 60 again, but I wouldn't dress in the styles I see teens and 20somethings sporting these days. I don't think it's particularly 'ageist' to suggest that certain looks look best on certain figures, or to say that certain age groups tend to have those figures while others don't.

What you read into phrases like 'old lady clothes' is up to you. It doesn't necessarily mean disgusting.

You really think that the the expression " dressing like an old lady" isn't dismissive and derogatory?

Gettingbysomehow · 30/05/2026 18:38

Old ladies dont dress like that. Im 64 and need three quarter length sleeves to hide my upper arms. I tend to go for more classic styles with modern thrown in.
The colour does nothing for you. Have you considered dying it a more exciting colour?

Robocopper · 30/05/2026 18:38

It looks a nice, comfy, wear it in the heat dress. You have a fantastic cleavage but maybe it would be shown off better with a more structured fitting dress?

PrimeSeason · 30/05/2026 18:39

It’s not an ‘old lady’ dress, so ‘no’ to the question.
But it’s not the most flattering with big boobs. I’m 34F myself so truly understand the challenge of finding things that work.

Ophy83 · 30/05/2026 18:40

Not everything you wear has to be the most flattering thing ever. Sometimes comfy is the order of the day. That dress looks comfy and as a plus shows you have a small waist. I'd probably team it with a brightly coloured bra as I think colourful straps look better than grey. And a nice pair of sandals. (Age 43)

Snooks1971 · 30/05/2026 18:41

JuliaBraverman · 30/05/2026 17:39

I think those shirred bodices are difficult for boobs

Yes I agree, I have big boobs and love shirred bodices but they make my rack look bigger which I personally don’t want.

Also - that shirred elastic gathering is not cooling in this heat so not an ideal summer dress!

When I think of old ladies I think of my Gran who passed away at 102 yrs, she mostly wore M&S fine knits and bright necklaces. My mum age 82 wears jeans, slim trousers, blouses. Lots of costume jewellery. So no you don’t dress like an “old lady” because old ladies can and will wear whatever they like.

Your so called friend sounds like a teenager (yes I’m making another generalisation 😳).

PS OP I also think you look great and I like the purple balloon 🎈

The thread title is Do I dress like an old lady"
So OP is accepting that " old ladies" dress in a certain way. That is ageist.

She is not challenging the view obviously held by a lot of people that older women dress in a certain way. She is just questioning whether she personally dresses in the way older women are assumed to dress. She is playing into the ageist view of women.

Sensibletrousers · 30/05/2026 18:43

You need to care less, basically.
I am 47 and am told I dress like a teenaged boy… and I couldn’t care less!

TorroFerney · 30/05/2026 18:44

Somethingbland · 30/05/2026 17:55

Well considering how unpleasant your thread is to older women do you think you actually deserve " nice " replies?

But it's not the op who said it was it - it was a friend. The op is simply repeating what her friend said.

Notsosweetcaroline · 30/05/2026 18:45

Isn’t the friend just sayinf she’s dressing in a manner typical of a much older woman than the op. Not sure what all the frothing is about.

which to be fair I don’t think she is. It’s more the dress is frumpy /dowdy, and does you no favours. The colour, the shape, and the length. If it’s new, I’d return,

Overtheatlantic · 30/05/2026 18:45

I’m 58 and find it very unflattering on women with large breasts; it’s the shirring. Perhaps as you age you will be able to ascertain which styles suit your figure.

Peterdottir · 30/05/2026 18:46

OP how old is your friend and what does she wear?

Busbygirl · 30/05/2026 18:47

What’s wrong with being an old lady in any case?

OP, I was contemplating buying this dress myself. I’m still undecided (but it’s OOS in my size anyway at the moment). You don’t look bad in it at all but I do think it’s a bit plain.

YourPoliteTurtle · 30/05/2026 18:50

Pearlstillsinging · 30/05/2026 18:28

But they are definitely not stylish. If I were bothered enough to ask all and sundry what they thought about my clothes, I would hope they thought they were stylish.
I don't ask all and sundry because I only buy clothes that know suit me.

I buy bright pink bras so the colours DOES show better when you see my straps.

Taste is a very personal thing - and we all believe we have taste 😂

Trotula · 30/05/2026 18:51

Her friend said she looked like an old lady so she’s possibly ageist rather than the op.
I’m old and Im really not bothered by these “old lady” comments because I’m mindful of my own age when I buy things; mainly that I want it to be flattering and not look out of date within a few months.
I would really love to wear the clothes my granddaughters wear but sadly my puffy arthritic knees don’t look good in a short skirt and my scraggy neck and bingo wings are best covered. It’s how I feel when I look in the mirror not a concern on how others perceive me.

Somethingbland · 30/05/2026 18:52

Well yes most age groups do dress certain ways.

A toddler is going to dress different to a teenager and a teenager is going to dress different to a 30 year old. A 30 year old is going to dress differently to an 80yo.

How many old men walk around in tracksuits and hoodies like teenagers.
They’re more than welcome to but people would say that they dress young.

Of course not everyone fits the same description but most age groups dress slightly different.
I know I dress a lot different than when I was late teens/early 20s and in 20 years time I can’t imagine wearing what I was wearing today. It was just a maxi dress but I’ve never seen anyone over 60 wear similar - they’re welcome to but it’s just unusual to see.

But OP was just asking if she looked like she dresses like an old woman as this is what her friend said.
It is not a personal attack on you or anyone else of your age.
She was just quoting what her friend said and asking for opinions.

If she had asked if she looks fat because her DH said she did, it’s not being offensive to fat people.

for many kids, an "old lady" is 30+

So I wouldn't get ridiculously offended by the term old lady, it means nothing

KnitFastDieWarm · 30/05/2026 18:59
  1. I was wearing a dress today that resembles a 17th century undergarment, so I suppose I was technically dressed like a 300 year old lady. What’s wrong with ‘looking like an old lady’ anyway?
  2. Your friend is rude.
  3. The dress looks summery and pretty on you and the colour suits your skin tone. Do YOU like it? If so, who gives a crap what your friend thinks? She’s not the one wearing it!
TheThirteenthFairy · 30/05/2026 19:00

There are plenty of old women who dress well, and plenty who don't give a shit. I agree with you that a large, low bust puts years on you - may I recommend Bravissimo? Sports bras can be a good idea. Low breasts only come about with age, so it can never be a youthful look. My advice is; do the best you can and then think about something else.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/05/2026 19:00

Well, not if I'm anything to go by. In my 60s and wearing drab chinos and a beige and indigo printed linen shirt.

Now wondering if I dress like an old lady.

I dont know why there is such faux confusion and downright virtue signalling about this

Im an 'old lady'. As an older person you have to dress in such a way that doesnt look frumpy, if you dont want to look frumpy. That dress OP wears, would look fresh and flighty, free and sprightly on someone young. On me, I would look like Ive come out in my nightie

As you age, clothes that look totally up to date on someone else, change on you. So you dress accordingly so that you look fresher and more crisp which means certain shapes dont suit anymore or colours you used to wear dont suit any more

You're not speaking for me when you talk about this thread being ageist, its realist.

I am an old lady but dont want to look like one thank you.
