Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

It isn’t an “old lady” dress but it’s not very flattering or stylish on you.

JuliaBraverman · 30/05/2026 17:39

I think those shirred bodices are difficult for boobs

Cooshawn · 30/05/2026 17:39

Old lady, no. But I think its quite dowdy and isn't something I'd choose.

But if you're comfortable and like it then why isn't that enough?

Stoicandhappy · 30/05/2026 17:39

I’m an old lady, in my sixties. I wouldn’t wear that dress. Not sure that helps any though.

If you like it, wear it.

AddictedToBooks · 30/05/2026 17:29

No you don't dress like an old lady and I actually think you look lovely.

Agree, the dress looks perfect for hot weather and you do look lovely.

Salvagehunter · 30/05/2026 17:40

Your friend sounds horrible! I think you look lovely in that dress by the way

Wingedharpy · 30/05/2026 17:41

I'm an old lady and don't own any dresses, so no.
You look perfectly fine and if you're comfortable, that's all that matters.
One of the joys of being an old lady is that you become completely invisible - and that suits me, and, you don't give a monkeys what anyone thinks of your appearance.

SandwichSuperstar · 30/05/2026 17:41

ididabigfatsmelly · 30/05/2026 17:36

Basically it’s a new dress I got today so sent a pic to 3 or 4 friends, 2 commented needing a bra, everyone liked apart from this one friend who said I dress like an old lady and as a friend she has seen what I usually wear so other dresses etc she’s obv seen me wearing and apparently I just have old lady taste nowadays

Why are other people's opinions so important to you?

I could understand if you were going to a wedding or something, but to send photos of you in an everyday Summer dress and then stress enough about your friend's replies to start a Mumsnet thread asking strangers is a bit odd.

Just wear it.

It looks nice and it's very suitable for the weather.

Somethingbland · 30/05/2026 17:41

Dear God the ageism in this thread is absolutely appalling.

I wish MN would make.ageism a reason for reporting threads.

What does dressing " like an old lady" actually mean? It is absolutely nasty , derogatory language

I'm 74. I don't dress " like an old lady". I dress like " me". How I want to look.
The assumption that old ladies are worthless unsightly, less than human, is absolutely disgusting.

Scarba · 30/05/2026 17:42

I don’t love ‘old lady’ as an implied low level insult. But I don’t associate your dress with older women. It’s a young summer look, pretty unremarkable.

I don’t know about new bra, I just think you have big boobs like me! I would not choose that style as I don’t like dresses making me feel busty/matronly. But that’s just preference.

You can report a thread for any reason using the 'other' button but good luck trying to get ageist or sexist posts removed.

HQ don't want to know.

Newsenmum · 30/05/2026 17:45

I was expecting woolly tights, a skirt, cardigan and perm. Which is btw still cute.

ididabigfatsmelly · 30/05/2026 17:45

Thanks for all replies, the nice ones in particular . My friend maybe seemed rude but I did ask her to be honest and she gave her honest opinion

Old ladies are just young ladies who've been around longer.
I know this 'cos I' m one too.

AgentPidge · 30/05/2026 17:45

No, I don't think you look frumpy.

Not since about 1950!

Jellox · 30/05/2026 17:47

What an odd thing for them to say!!

It’s literally just a plain maxi dress - there’s nothing old lady about it at all!!

And I don’t understand the bra comments either. It looks fine in that picture.

How bitchy do your ‘friends’ sound.

redboxerclub · 30/05/2026 17:47

It’s a boring pale dress with no accessories and a bad bra. It looks fine but it’s not going to win any style awards. It looks better than me in my jersey short and boring r shirt and muddy feet after a day in the garden

Pearlstillsinging · 30/05/2026 17:48

I don't think 'old ladies' usually wear dresses that show their bra straps. I'm 71 and have never, would never wear clothes that show my underwear. I would rather wear Bardot style and a strapless bra. I always think that visible bra straps look very poor.

newfriend05 · 30/05/2026 17:48

sorry OP that dress is not flattering on you and you’re 42 , not 62 it looks frumpy it’s hard I know when your big boobed , I am too … but you have a nice shape you can find better

I have reported it but I have absolutely no faith MN will do anything about it.
There have been many unpleasantly ageist threads on MN
But this thread is so blatantly and disgustingly insulting of older women it's taken my breath away.

I was at the beach yesterday and there were loads of older ladies with visible bra straps.

I don't think anyone gave a shite in the heat.

JulietteHasAGun · 30/05/2026 17:52

Dress is fine. I do agree it’s not the most flattering but it’s not awful. I have big boobs as well and round necks aren’t the best in anything. I’d say the most flattering dresses I have are shirt type dresses. Cinch in at my waist and avoid the round necks. But they’re not particularly summery (or easy to find currently).

Somethingbland · 30/05/2026 17:53

AgentPidge · 30/05/2026 17:45

No, I don't think you look frumpy.

Oh so being an older woman means you are frumpy does it?
Do you make a habit of insulting people or just those who are older than you?
