Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

OP posts:
Turnitoffnonagain · 30/05/2026 18:20

You have a decent figure. But those shirred dresses don't do us well endowed women any favours. There is way too much fabric in the skirt part, making you look hippier than you are, and the colour is a bit meh.
Sorry. It's also too long. So no, definitely not old ladyish. Just not ideal for your figure and height. I do know its really hard to find nice stuff out there at the moment.

Well, old ladies don't tend to wear spaghetti straps, but they are fond of pastels.

They do where my DM lives!

Jellox · 30/05/2026 18:19

It’s not OP being rude.

Her friends were rude to her, she was just repeating what they said.

It is OP who is asking the question Do I dress like an old lady?
The very fact you are excusing her shows how normalised the contempt for older women is .

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 30/05/2026 18:22

IMO it's a too small. It looks over stretched and skimpy. A better bra and a size or two up would give a more flattering silhouette.

as for the age thing - I'm in my sixties and think it's a bit dowdy.

Trotula · 30/05/2026 18:22

I’m old and I would only wear that dress with the spaghetti straps if I was on holiday in a hot climate as it would reveal far too much arm and neck for my liking.
It looks lovely on you, especially in this hot weather!
Maybe the colour is a bit old
lady, my mum loved that colour and wore it in her nineties!
I think a sweetheart or V neckline would be more flattering.

JuliaBraverman · 30/05/2026 18:23

Summer dresses are so hard to find for the larger boobed ladies of which unfortunately I am one

Snoken · 30/05/2026 18:23

I think the colour washes you out and the thin straps doesn't really work with the big boobs. A more structured dress or one with thicker straps would look better, and pick a different colour. It's hard to say without seeing your whole hair but maybe an icy blue, bright white or purple would work better.

Jellox · 30/05/2026 18:26

MyIcyHeart · 30/05/2026 18:00

The dress is dull AF and makes you look dumpy round the mid-section.

I think that’s a rude reply.

Some people like plain dresses that are one coloured and not lots of patterns etc.

It also doesn’t make OP look ‘dumpy’.

It’s a nice dress and OP looks nice in it.
She has big boobs so could wear something that accentuates her figure more but not everyone wants to that, plus it’s hard enough find clothes that fit when you have big boobs.

Edited because it was a duplicate post

ShanghaiDiva · 30/05/2026 18:26

I don’t think it’s ideal with a large bust, but nothing about it suggests it should be worn by a certain age group. Ideal in the hot weather and I like your bracelets.

Diamondsareforever72 · 30/05/2026 18:27

I’m 57 and I wouldn’t wear it, sorry.
I wear short denim-type skirts and I have great legs. Plain linen tops or tops with some embroidered detailing.

(I’ve lost a great deal of weight. And I’ve worn some very mumsy/frumpy clothes in my time! I look better now than I ever did, except for when I was a teenager! 🤣)

user1471453601 · 30/05/2026 18:27

As an old lady can I reassure you I wouldn't wear that dress. It wouldn't suit me at all.

Today I'm wearing a pair of Jigsaw wide legged pale blue linen trousers and an Unfolded boxy dark blue teeshirt.

ginasevern · 30/05/2026 18:28

It's just a regular sun dress and looks fine. I wouldn't look twice one way or the other. But as a rather well endowed woman myself, the ruched top isn't the most flattering.

Not really. She is quoting a friend of hers who made the ‘old lady’ comment.

TotalBaloney · 30/05/2026 17:54

My 72 your old MIL wouldn’t be bothered about showing her bra straps. They’re hardly offensive, just a strip of elastic.

But they are definitely not stylish. If I were bothered enough to ask all and sundry what they thought about my clothes, I would hope they thought they were stylish.
I don't ask all and sundry because I only buy clothes that know suit me.

Obviously she disagreed else she wouldn’t have worn it.

I am excusing her because you’re being rude when you obviously haven’t read all of her posts.

TotalBaloney · 30/05/2026 18:29

holdupp · 30/05/2026 18:14

The dress is fine but I think it would look 100 times nicer and more interesting in just about any other colour than grey - it's just a very unsummery colour.

I think it’s a pale denim-y blue?

  1. How can we tell from one example
  2. It's totally reductive to make out old ladies are a homogeneous group with one style
  3. You're gonna have to define old lady for us anyway
mathanxiety · 30/05/2026 18:31

Somethingbland · 30/05/2026 17:41

Dear God the ageism in this thread is absolutely appalling.

I wish MN would make.ageism a reason for reporting threads.

What does dressing " like an old lady" actually mean? It is absolutely nasty , derogatory language

I'm 74. I don't dress " like an old lady". I dress like " me". How I want to look.
The assumption that old ladies are worthless unsightly, less than human, is absolutely disgusting.

Edited

I'll never see 60 again, but I wouldn't dress in the styles I see teens and 20somethings sporting these days. I don't think it's particularly 'ageist' to suggest that certain looks look best on certain figures, or to say that certain age groups tend to have those figures while others don't.

What you read into phrases like 'old lady clothes' is up to you. It doesn't necessarily mean disgusting.

Canoodler · 30/05/2026 18:31

To me you look like a gorgeous young woman in a sun dress.

No I haven't read all her posts.

I have been busy starting a thread in Site Stuff about the fact that MN doesnt recognise ageism as breaking Talk Guidelines.

I dont know what else OP has said because I cant get past her appalling and offensive thread title.

JayJayj · 30/05/2026 18:33

Nope! A pretty standard summer dress. You, obviously, have large breasts, that affect the type/style of what you can wear I assume. I’m a 32E (ish) and I struggle with certain styles.

Also to add, I’m 40 and love a cardigan. Which I would take as a bit granny ish. 😂

Jellox · 30/05/2026 18:33

FWIW OP those style of dresses are typically worn by the younger generation and so I’m not sure why your friend thinks it’s ’old lady’ like.

I can only assume that you usually wear bright colours/patterns and as it’s one coloured and more pastel, that she is implying you are dressing more boring - which to her equals not as youthful aka older.

OneNewLeader · 30/05/2026 18:35

I’m old, I wouldn’t wear that dress, if that helps? If you like it, crack on.
