AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

It’s the weekend- I probably couldn’t get worked up about it unless you were caning it most mornings!

RampantIvy · 25/04/2026 12:00

It's up to you. I never fancy alcohol first thing and prefer tea or cofee.
I do drink but prefer to drink in the evening.

Hadalifeonce · 25/04/2026 12:01

It's perfectly acceptable to drink champagne with breakfast, why not a pint?

minipie · 25/04/2026 12:01

That’s brunch not breakfast I’d say - and it’s really none of your DH’s business anyway.

NormasArse · 25/04/2026 12:01

Although… I’m assuming Wetherspoons, and for that YABU!!

NuffSaidSam · 25/04/2026 12:01

YANBU

But I agree it's an odd way to start the day.

Whether it's out of character or not, I don't know.

hahabahbag · 25/04/2026 12:01

I find it odd behaviour but to eaches own. Even at the airport I find it weird anyone can stomach alcohol before midday, bar perhaps a Buck’s Fizz or mimosa

Ha, there was a reason I didn’t name them!

You can’t go wrong with their breakfast offering IMO. I wouldn’t touch anything else food wise though.

It was a breakfast - it was 9.30

Wetherspoons food is fantastic.

busyd4y · 25/04/2026 12:03

I think that adults should eat or drink what they want as long as their choice doesn't adversely affect someone else

Nothing unreasonable about a 'Spoons breakfast!

Iocanepowder · 25/04/2026 12:05

Hey it’s sunny outside and they didn’t think twice about this when I lived in France.

Agree - they’re pretty good! We stayed in a huge family room in a Salisbury Wetherspoons a few years ago, and had the breakfast downstairs in the morning - it was a great place for a weekend stay!

I wouldn’t have a pint with breakfast though - even at an airport!

Dahlietta · 25/04/2026 12:10

Oh yeah, I definitely wouldn't be having a pint with it!

edwinbear · 25/04/2026 12:12

DS ran the mini marathon this morning, we went for breakfast afterwards, about 10am, and there was a group having a pint with their breakfast. It’s not for me, but they weren’t drunk or lairy or anything, so each to their own! I did look twice though.

Monty36 · 25/04/2026 12:12

Drinking with some lunches is acceptable in our society.
At dinner, yes.
Not with breakfast. Here. It would be viewed as boorish at breakfast.

Some places abroad it is not viewed negatively. A cocktail with breakfast in parts of France is quite normal.

Why is that? Is there a reason we should be boycotting them?

TheChosenTwo · 25/04/2026 12:16

It would be very out of character for me! I don’t mind a drink at the airport lounge before a flight (I hate flying so this calms my nerves!) but I rarely drink and a breakfast pint would not enter my mind.
I don’t know, is it problematic? Probably not, as an isolated event. If you’re drinking at breakfast regularly… although i’m presuming you don’t!

TheFutureIs · 25/04/2026 12:17

Not unreasonable at all. Hope you enjoyed your breakfasts and your pints!

Epicuriouss · 25/04/2026 12:18

I don’t care but YABU about using the phrase ‘washed down’ 🤢🤢🤢

Besafeeatcake · 25/04/2026 12:19

Grim. How much do you need to drink if you need to drink at breakfast.?

Beer with breakfast at Spoons is weirdly normal in ours. Mix of parkrunners, people going to football. I’ve never done it but don’t raise an eyebrow at people who do. I find chocolate cake after parkrun an odd choice too but lots enjoy it.

You can do what you want but it's not how you d choose to start the day.
