AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · Yesterday 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

As long as you’re not driving don’t see the harm in it at all

Agree - they’re pretty good! We stayed in a huge family room in a Salisbury Wetherspoons a few years ago, and had the breakfast downstairs in the morning - it was a great place for a weekend stay!

I wouldn’t have a pint with breakfast though - even at an airport!

Yes, the Wetherspoons hotel in Salisbury was great. Especially as they gave me a discount on our second room - “not your fault you have three children”, they said. I wasn’t going to argue. Similarly, no pint for me with breakfast though.

Wetherspoons food is fantastic.

I was also in Wetherspoons for breakfast. Good food, great price. I can’t get excited about people drinking any time of the day. Do what you like!

drinking after park run reminds me of te time I used to go to church just to just the post church sherry. 😝

No drinking until the afternoon…always goes to my head faster when it’s still daylight though.

diddl · Yesterday 13:29

Does he think that you are now on the way to becoming an alcoholic?

Surely he should be concerned if you were doing it regularly?

As a one off, what's his concern?

If OP finds it acceptable to drink at half 9 in the morning, I’m going to make a (probably correct) assumption, that they drink regularly. Otherwise, why even think about having one?

Absolutely. OP might be too far gone already but we have to try. Let's stage a Mumsnet intervention and try to bring her back from the brink of rolling-round-in- the-street-drunk alcoholism!

So I assume in summer you don't drink until after 9pm then

HaveYouFedTheFish · Yesterday 13:32

It's traditional where I used to live (not UK) to go for a beer after Sunday morning church and set the world to rights with friends. It's not even necessarily traditional to eat anything with it!

Yes, it's such a slippery slope, 9.30am drink one day, full-blown alcoholic the next! Only on Mn, of course

piano55 · Yesterday 13:39

If they serve alcohol that time of day then as an adult you’re welcome to buy it. Who cares what anyone else thinks!

jay55 · Yesterday 13:41

As someone who cannot be arsed to go out evenings I think this should be normalised. Having a drink with a friend when the time suits sounds wonderful.

cariadlet · Yesterday 13:42

Alcohol with breakfast seems very weird to me and I don't understand why anyone would want an alcoholic drink that early - whether it's a pint in Wetherspoons, a drink at an airport or a glass of champagne (which I've never seen anyone have but it was mentioned by a pp so must be a thing).

A cooked breakfast needs a mug of tea or coffee with it.

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 13:47

I can’t see a problem in having a drink with your breakfast, even less of a problem if you only had one pint.

That's if you drink tea or coffee. I don't drink either

We attend a military breakfast couple of times a month, Saturday morning. A couple of the higher ranks buy a glass of red after breakfast. I drop one off on our way home sometimes, he usually says not to take him all the way and drop him by the pub…….
Another guy I sometimes drop a bit further on comments ‘oh the grandchildren must be visiting, he’s not going home today’.

It been decided that as treat once in a while what’s the harm, but carry it on for the rest of the day? Maybe not.
Enjoy.

You do know that you don’t have to get drunk to have a problem with alcohol?

I also didn’t she had a problem.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · Yesterday 13:50

Pint at 9.30 is a bit ridiculous but whatever.

dontforgetme · Yesterday 13:52

I always have a pint if I have a spoons breakfast. Their hashbrowns are the best!

It's up to you. I never fancy alcohol first thing and prefer tea or cofee.
I do drink but prefer to drink in the evening.

It may not have been first thing though. You could be up at 6 and having the breakfast at 11.30

Few years back DH and I were being shown round Le Havre by a friend, we went for coffee around 10.30-11 and plenty of people were sitting around with glasses of wine.

I’ve seen workers in Normandy and Provence go for breakfast in their local and have a “café-Calva” at any time after 7.00am, “washed down” with a Gauloise, of course! Mind you, this was about 50 years ago and I’ve no idea if things have changed in those parts of France!

ButterYellowHair · Yesterday 13:54

Yeah drinking alcohol in the morning is unusual and quite unhealthy. Of course it’s not much different from having it with dinner physiologically but I think socially/psychologically it’s more likely you will then drink more throughout the day.

Dodorogers · Yesterday 13:56

Educata · Yesterday 12:02

It was a breakfast - it was 9.30

Guinness is a great start to the day — all that iron!

You would assume wrong. Someone doing something out of character as a one-off is in way, shape or form suggestive of an addiction.

If I'm observing a stranger I have no idea it's a one off, so my comment stands. I would see someone drinking alcohol at that time and assume they have a huge drink problem. I might well be wrong, but my point was that it's very unusual and highly likely to be indicative of a problem.

I don't think people with a healthy relationship with alcohol drink that early in the day, and yes I know a lot of people on here are saying they do it, but I don't think they have healthy relationships with alcohol either. I think a lot of people have low level drink problems in this country and that it's normalised, and that's what we are seeing on this thread.

I barely drink but have on very odd occasions had a pint with breakfast, holiday, day out. I am most certainly not an alcoholic. This is not how alcoholism is defined in anyway shape or form

Anyone who drinks more than a thimble of sherry at Christmas is deemed an alcoholic on mn. It’s ridiculous.

OP yanbu.
