AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · 25/04/2026 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

I couldn't do it though I don't drink pints anyway. I couldn't drink any alcohol at that time of day with breakfast.

Few years back DH and I were being shown round Le Havre by a friend, we went for coffee around 10.30-11 and plenty of people were sitting around with glasses of wine.

Oh totally. I worked as a TA while I was living there and it was normal for teachers to drink wine in the staffroom at lunch.

I would say as an occasional thing as a treat, booze at breakfast is fine. Only slightly earlier than bottomless brunch isn’t it.

Plus 9.30am may be that early for some. I am often up before 6am.

Notmyreality · 25/04/2026 14:00

How common

Gardenquestion22 · 25/04/2026 14:00

Prosecco or champagne for breakfast on holiday fine…pint with a fry up not….it is double standards.

hope you enjoyed it.

It was a breakfast - it was 9.30

Yeah, a pint at 9:30 is grim.

Then again, I think a Spoons breakfast is pretty naff, so what do I know? Even the supermarket cafes are better.

jellyfish798 · 25/04/2026 14:04

Go for it girl it's the weekend - tell DP to lighten up you're not hitting the vodka every morning x

Bowling4soup · 25/04/2026 14:04

I think it’s only acceptable in the airport when you’re officially starting your holiday. I’ve never done it but I know many do and don’t judge. I find it hard not to judge on a normal day though sorry!

Why is a pint at 9.30 grim? Why does the time of day matter?

Terfedout · 25/04/2026 14:06

Assuming its wetherspoons, where it is the law to have a pint with breakfast. You don't want to stand out as a weirdo do you 🙃🤪

Maybe DP was a little envious that you had a pint and he hasn't, so chose to make you feel shitty about it?! Don't let it bother you anyway, if you had s good time then focus on that.

If I'm observing a stranger I have no idea it's a one off, so my comment stands. I would see someone drinking alcohol at that time and assume they have a huge drink problem. I might well be wrong, but my point was that it's very unusual and highly likely to be indicative of a problem.

I don't think people with a healthy relationship with alcohol drink that early in the day, and yes I know a lot of people on here are saying they do it, but I don't think they have healthy relationships with alcohol either. I think a lot of people have low level drink problems in this country and that it's normalised, and that's what we are seeing on this thread.

Edited

Maybe a bit less judging observing others would be in order?

The very fact that OP’s DP said it was out of character, by definition means it is not a regular event.

You do know that you don’t have to get drunk to have a problem with alcohol?

I also didn’t she had a problem.

I quoted the wrong person. Sorry. Reading your posts I can understand why you might have reservations about alcohol at any time of the day.

No worries! I know conversations around alcohol can be varied. I have friends that think I’m strange for not drinking.

Better in what way? The bacon & sausages in Spoons is actually good quality

redboxer321 · 25/04/2026 14:16

I like Guinness but I wouldn't have it with a fry-up. Guinness is like a meal in a glass for me. Would had probably have had a lager. Cider is a no no. I'd only drink scrumpy and only at a folk festival or such like. A fry-up with a bloody Mary? Now you're talking!

QuintadosMalvados · 25/04/2026 14:18

My dh does this at Wetherspoons at breakfast. I can't.
It's not through any moral objection, but there's always some chore or other to do and I've really got a low tolerance for alcohol.
One pint and I'm woozy.
I prefer to do all the chores then have a drink at about 6pm on days off.

Maybe I would if on holiday or to catch a train.

And If drinking at breakfast is seen as somehow an indicator of alcoholism-which I don't necessarily think it is, far from it- let me say this: alcoholics come from all classes.

In fact I've known retired barristers be drinking pints in Spoons at 11am.

They're all of one class regardless of background-pissheads! 😁

Spoons is truly an egalitarian place!!

Startrekkeruniverse · 25/04/2026 14:33

Who cares? If you want a drink have one.

trikonasanallama · 25/04/2026 14:34

An occasional breakfast pint is one of life's great joys, absolutely nothing wrong with it.
If that was how you started every day, yes, that would be a problem, but that's clearly not the case.

The beans, the bread and the sausages are cheap and nasty. Scrambled eggs are rubbery. DH quite likes the bacon.

StephensLass1977 · 25/04/2026 14:39

I don't drink but it's totally up to you what you drink with your breakfast. I'm sure it isn't every day.

If you can't see a problem with 2.5 units of alcohol to start the day, fair enough.

Overtheatlantic · 25/04/2026 14:44

YABU for “washing down” your food with a drink. Sorry, it’s one of those hated phrases I can never remember when I see those threads. I’m glad you enjoyed your pint!

Why if it's only a very occasional thing?
It's not like op was getting drunk
Id be interested in how the ones who are saying it's grim if it's acceptable to have a glass or 2 of wine most nights, because that's probably far worse than a once in a blue moon pint with breakfast
