AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · 25/04/2026 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

@user2848502016

well you know then that having a pint with breakfast is in no way “grim”. If OP had ten pints then vommed them back up into a pint glass, that would be grim, well and truly.

@Cherrytree86 don’t think you meant to tag me! I said the OP was NBU

You seem to be getting things a bit mixed up. I never said "grim"

You said gross which is basically saying the same thing.

gross/grim…whatever 🤷‍♀️
neither is an apt description of OP having a pint in the morning when out for breakfast with a friend

I personally think women get a much tougher time than women for drinking full stop. My brother is a personal trainer. He's not a big drinker at all. But when he goes to see our football team play away his pals and I assume him will be on a train at 10 am having a drink

When they play at home he drives and he doesn't go to all away games so maybe 6 times a year. Is he grim or gross in my opinion - no. Is he a functioning alcoholic. No - he hardly drinks at all

Having an occasional pint before lunchtime does not make someone an alcoholic.

Yea I know what I said, when people quote others, they need to actually use the word the person used, else it's not a quote.

You keep tagging someone else.

What makes you think you can tell people what they do and don't find gross?

Personally I find drinking alcohol with breakfast pretty grim, although tbf you’d probably need something strong to wash down the horrible microwaved slop served up in Wetherspoons.

What's wrong with microwaves? I use mine for lots of things. And no it's not all microwaved. You sound like a snob.

Nothing wrong with microwaves, it’s what purports to be food that is reheated in said microwaves that I take issue with. And if not choosing to patronise an establishment with sticky carpets, stale beer and microwaved slop, and wanting to avoid rubbing shoulders with toothless old alcoholics, chavvy riff-raff and society’s misfits makes me a snob then yes, I’ll happily take that.

I drank mimosas on holiday last week but a pint at breakfast makes me 🤢

I wouldn't particularly want to go to that sort of place either. Where is this place you speak of, exactly? Because it certainly isn't any Wetherspoons I've ever been to. And I've been to loads

Yeah I agree, I wouldn't drink a pint with breakfast cos I don't like beer! I discovered the most gorgeous drink on my last AI holiday, a barraquito. Basically a liqueur coffee with condensed milk. I had one every day just after lunch. Was gorgeous 😍

Perhaps you are fortunate enough to live in a more salubrious area than I do, but certainly the town centre examples I can think of were rough old boozers even before they were taken over by Wetherspoons. Always seem to be near a bus station for some reason!

I've never been in such an establishment and I've been to a few Whetherspoon's in my time (and frequently went to the one I used to live near.) The most noise I got living on that road (about three minutes walk from said Spoons) was the ambulances from the local hospital. There was very little trouble, and I've never seen any trouble when I've been in one. I was once sat next to a table of over-excited teenagers when out to lunch with a friend, but they apologised for being noisy.

It's not just where I live though. I've travelled to many different towns in the UK and we often go to the local Spoons for breakfast. I've never seen what you describe. On the contrary, it's often families

You need to move

The Spoons nearest me is quietly full of lap top users in the day, has a flurry of after-workers including the estate agents in suits and guys in steel capped boots (those nice trades people who keep your life flowing) - they always spring to the door to open it for me if I am carrying drinks to the garden, and then the evening crowd representing the full wide diversity of the area.

Saturdays and Sundays: lots of families.

Really friendly atmosphere, no bad behaviour.

Carpets and toilets immaculate.

Fantastic range of beers well kept. Good craft beers.

The other one I visit is the local for the big teaching hospital. Full of students and hospital staff. Average number of teeth as far as I can see.

Food: not my style , but I have had fish and chips - excellent, nachos, ditto, Breakfast muffin - fine.

It did make laugh, actually - we (mostly middle class community volunteers) go in for breakfast after an annual early morning event. This year notices on the bar said that the hot choc in the breakfast deal was no longer on unlimited re/fills because of gvt rules about sugar.

So you can’t have two mugs of hot chocolate at 9am but you could have 2 pints.

Edited

You can have as much hot chocolate as you like, you just have to pay for it. Like beer

Well objectively a pint of Guinness is not a good start to the day, its empty calories with any nutritional benefit off set by the alcohol. A weatherspoons fry up is not a good start to the day either. So your husband is correct on his first point.
However the important part is whether he is also correct on his second. Because if he is, and this is out of character, then it really doesn't matter. Our health is dictated by habits not one offs.

notacooldad · 29/04/2026 10:09

I would assume anyone drinking alcohol at 9.30am is an alcoholic, whether it's a pint or a mimosa. It's far too early for a pint.
I have to say that wouldn't be my first conclusion.
If I had to think anything I would guess they had been on a night shift and it was now their down time.
Or it was a special occasion, maybe going out for the day.
I wouldn't assume ithey were a pint at dawn, every day person.

I have two BA degrees. One in business studies and one in criminology. I have a post grad in Community education and another in alcohol and drug studies. I would honestly like you to tell me what makes me a "misfit" or "chavvy riff raff" because I occasionally drink in wetherspoon?

I have never met you, therefore your academic achievements you like to bang the drum about are completely irrelevant. No-one singled you out, I was merely talking about my own personal experiences.

That's true of any alcoholic drink whether you have it at 07:00hrs or 21:15.
Also a fry up could be quite nutritious. It has protein, fats and carbs which should keep hunger away for hours.
Personally it would be too much for me at breakfast im a slow start in the morning and like the same meal every breakfast time but if someone wants that I cant see a problem.
