AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · Yesterday 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

Right bunch of fun sponges on here. 😆

Are the people saying sausages in Spoons are grim ever had them? They're delicious!

LaburnumAnagyroides · Yesterday 13:04

Out of character suggests this is a one-off rather than regularly being on the booze with your cornflakes. An occasional hedonistic treat is one of the joys of life.

I flew business class a few weeks ago and damn right I went to the lounge and had a glass of fizz with my breakfast at 9am. Is it better because it was 'posh' not Spoons? Or worse because I was drinking alone?

blythet · Yesterday 13:04

Personally I don’t see the time of day as an issue. Surely someone having a pint as a one off with breakfast is much better than someone having 10 pints over the course of a few hours at night?!

the fact your DP commented on it being out of character means it’s not something you make a habit of!

Busydoingsomething · Yesterday 13:04

It’s not unheard of for me to finish parkrun, have a breakfast and a coffee/pint and then walk home. I rarely drink any other time. I’m sat with friends. If people want to judge me, go for it!

Creepybookworm · Yesterday 13:05

There's something about the image of fried eggs swimming around internally with beer that makes me feel sick but if you can stomach it, I wouldn't judge.

DP can jog on

Spoons is my second favourite breakfast after parkrun (Tim hortons is my fave). Often see people drinking at that time. Usually either old men or groups that are obviously using it as a meeting point before getting a bus or train to a stag/hen/birthday celebration. I'm more annoyed that the government have decided I'd get fat if I have the unlimited hot chocolate at spoons. I don't like tea or coffee.

Last year we went to Belfast on an early flight and at first I felt a bit strange having a pint at 7AM at the airport, but soon got into it (airports have no time zones - even though it was a domestic flight). It's not usual behaviour and I can't see the issue on occasion.

I would assume anyone drinking alcohol at 9.30am is an alcoholic, whether it's a pint or a mimosa. It's far too early for a pint.

You would assume wrong. Someone doing something out of character as a one-off is in way, shape or form suggestive of an addiction.

PippaToryFripp · Yesterday 13:08

Would you have enjoyed a zero alcohol Guinness just as much?

Blodyneighbour · Yesterday 13:10

Me and my ex had a breakfast in the chain you are talking about. It was 8am we had coffee , a cocktail each and a bottle of red. We came out quite sozzled. But we were on holiday and went to the beach to sleep it off.

ConnieHeart · Yesterday 13:10

JayJayj · Yesterday 12:53

I wouldn’t. I really just don’t understand the need for people to be drinking so often. We all know how bad it is for our body.

I do think that living with an alcoholic as a teenager has definitely clouded my view around alcohol. But I just don’t see the why you would want to drink so early in the day.

What do you mean, so often? Where does the OP say she does this often?

Edited

I am so going to do this after my next park run! I need something after torturing myself for 40 mins!

I’m with your DP.

Having a pint with breakfast is grim.

SuitcaseAndSecrets · Yesterday 13:12

The other food is actually much nicer than the breakfasts.. have you tried ? Loads of actually top class.
If a breakfast with a pint is good enough.. you sound a tad snobby about it.

There are alcoholics who don't drink in the morning and people who aren't who will on occasion

Wetherspoons food is fantastic.

Also they have a hygiene rating higher than miller and carter. I think that because the bogs a mile away from the kitchen tbh!

If I fancied a drink in the morning I'd go for it & if you assumed something about me I wouldn't know about it so who cares?

Squirrel60 · Yesterday 13:13

It's your body, no one else's. Eat and drink what you want when you want!

SusanChurchouse · Yesterday 13:13

The fact it was with food, and you stopped at one, suggests a relatively healthy attitude towards alcohol consumption. You can’t even buy booze here in Scotland before 10am and it’s not like we’re famed for sensible drinking.

Im so glad I stopped drinking before the bottomless brunch trend. That would have fed my unhealthy habits!

Plenty of people do it at airports. Nothing grim about it

Why is that? Is there a reason we should be boycotting them?

I need to know too!

Missed out not in any way...

Wimbledon and race meets start serving at 10am (depending on the race of course). As said, it's double standards. Posters wet themselves over the French, suddenly smoking and all day drinking is acceptable. Workers, market traders, greengrocers etc used to start their mornings with a hot toddy. When meeting up with a friend, a alcohol drink is fine. Over winter I'll have Weatherspoons hot chocolate with a baileys in. It sets you up nicely for an afternoon nap.

What do you mean, so often? Where does the OP say she does this often?

If OP finds it acceptable to drink at half 9 in the morning, I’m going to make a (probably correct) assumption, that they drink regularly. Otherwise, why even think about having one?

JustGiveMeReason · Yesterday 13:17

Like most, I think there should be a 3rd option to the vote.

Theoretically, I think any adult with capacity should be able to do what they want as long as it doesn't adversely affect other people
BUT
I think it is very odd to be drinking alcohol with breakfast.
I love a fry up - it is probably my favourite meal ever, but it really doesn't need a pint with it. Coffee or a big mug of builders tea is what accompanies a cooked breakfast.
