AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · Today 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

Thanks for making it personal. If by a miserable sod you mean not an alcoholic then yes.

Hey it’s sunny outside and they didn’t think twice about this when I lived in France.

Few years back DH and I were being shown round Le Havre by a friend, we went for coffee around 10.30-11 and plenty of people were sitting around with glasses of wine.

I think it's a weird choice, but it's up to you.

Wetherspoons' food is gross though, the sausages etc. will be grim.

nutsfornuts · Today 12:31

It doesn’t matter when you drink particularly, the overall quantity is the issue (for your wellbeing).

One pint with breakfast - fine, 8 pints after dinner - not fine.

In general I’d assume someone who has a point with breakfast is probably quite a big drinker but of course that may not necessarily be true.

Agreed and agreed.

Absolutely abnormal.

Fooledaroundandfellinlove · Today 12:35

I don’t know anyone who would drink alcohol at breakfast so it’s not usual in my circles. However, bottomless brunches are definitely a thing and they seem to start about 11am. When we go on holiday, people have mimosas with breakfast and there are people drinking alcohol from mid morning.

Im sure the odd pint of Guinness isn’t going to kill anyone.

MassiveOvaryaction · Today 12:35

Depends on what you've got on for the rest of the day and whether you're driving. I can't say I'd have a pint at that time of day, unless it was in an airport as we all know usual rules don't apply but I wouldn't judge you for it.

Wynter25 · Today 12:36

Ive had a glass of wine with my lunch. Its fine

BillieWiper · Today 12:37

Fantastic to have Guinness for breakfast! You had some food as well and it's quite soothing and weak is Guinness. I think it sounds lovely.

I sometimes do this but it's been a while as pubs are so expensive and two of the spoons near me shut down. The other one is horrendous and too depressing!

Having one pint in the morning with breakfast doesn't make someone an alcoholic

Alltheusefulitems · Today 12:38

You're in pub having breakfast so I would say having a pint with it is absolutely fine and I wouldn't expect anyone to bat an eyelid.

Wetherspoon breakfasts are absolutely fine. One of the better items on their menu

Bluegreenbird · Today 12:40

Well it’s super common in Spoons. I walk past it most days and people do indeed start on the lagers first thing. I just assume they’re unemployed or alcoholic or shift workers.
Do what you like. Doesn’t it make you go into that weird relaxed state that’s incompatible with daytime though? Maybe that’s just me.

IAmBeaIDrinkTea · Today 12:41

I bloody love a Spoons breakfast 😁
Such good value and really nice.
I personally couldn't stomach alcohol at half nine in the morning, but each to their own!
It's the weekend, it's presumably a one off and not like you do it every day.
I'd tell DH to shut his face if I was you, and say "it was very nice actually" 😁

Error404FucksNotFound · Today 12:42

I don't think it really matters what time of day you have a single pint. It's more situational than time of day. Having a can on the school run - bad idea. Weekend breakfast - if you want to then go for it.

I barely drink but have on very odd occasions had a pint with breakfast, holiday, day out. I am most certainly not an alcoholic. This is not how alcoholism is defined in anyway shape or form

dailyconniptions · Today 12:43

Who gives a shit what he thinks? This is exactly why I live alone. Soooo tedious. You're an adult OP. What you do is up to you.

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · Today 12:45

For me, alcohol at lunch even is definitely a Christmas only thing, so I wouldn't choose a pint at breakfast time.

However, I wonder how much of the raised eyebrows is because it's Guinness in spoons rather than mimosas at the Ritz.

mantez · Today 12:45

I don't know why you need to ask, you do what you want, the place is serving drink, so have it!

If you think drinking in the morning is somewhat iffy, have a look at the number of passengers in an airport having lots of pints etc. at 4 and 5 am and onwards.

Go for it, as a one off. Far too much Puritanism on this site.

Oh it's fine if rich people do it, don't worry.

Well exactly.

Personally I'd say if you want a pint at breakfast time as an occasional thing, go for it!

JayJayj · Today 12:53

I wouldn’t. I really just don’t understand the need for people to be drinking so often. We all know how bad it is for our body.

I do think that living with an alcoholic as a teenager has definitely clouded my view around alcohol. But I just don’t see the why you would want to drink so early in the day.

andana · Today 12:54

I’d probably have a Bloody Mary instead of a pint but unless you’re having a pint with your breakfast every morning then no issue I can see!

Malinia · Today 12:55

I would assume anyone drinking alcohol at 9.30am is an alcoholic, whether it's a pint or a mimosa. It's far too early for a pint.
