AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · Yesterday 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

@Educata YABVU. It should've been champagne or (for me personally) a double brandy with my coffee. Not that I ever get the chance!

Grim. How much do you need to drink if you need to drink at breakfast.?

Want vs need? A choice

Guinness is gross but op chose it. Why not

Backawayfromthesausage · Yesterday 14:51

This thread has really jade me laugh, especially those proclaiming everyone gets wankered up in France in the morning.

n0 it’s not normal in France to drink wit your breakfast.😂

I think it's a weird choice, but it's up to you.

Wetherspoons' food is gross though, the sausages etc. will be grim.

So much snobbery about Spoons . Nothing wrong with their sausages.

JipJup · Yesterday 14:54

NormasArse · Yesterday 12:01

Although… I’m assuming Wetherspoons, and for that YABU!!

Why would a grown woman be unreasonable to use a chain of pubs she likes?

So weird.

JLou08 · Yesterday 14:55

It's not a good start to the day, the fry up or the alcohol. I wouldn't care about others choosing to do it. I probably wouldn't comment on most people doing it but if the thought popped into my head with my DH I'd say it. Not to have a go but just because we don't really have a filter with each other.

Some people are weird on MN about Wetherspoons- mostly because the owner is a Brexiteer.

Perfectly lawful opinion in a modern democracy. It;s not like he kills puppies.

I don’t care but YABU about using the phrase ‘washed down’ 🤢🤢🤢

Agree, it's a phrase that makes me feel sick.

Did you ask your boyfriends opinion? Pigs will fly the day I want a man's opinion.

Ive had a glass of wine with my lunch. Its fine

I had a glass of wine with dinner last night, but the OP is talking about having a pint with breakfast.

Anyway, my view is that adults are free to eat and drink whatever they like, as long as they are not adversely affecting anyone else with the choices they make for themselves.

If I'm observing a stranger I have no idea it's a one off, so my comment stands. I would see someone drinking alcohol at that time and assume they have a huge drink problem. I might well be wrong, but my point was that it's very unusual and highly likely to be indicative of a problem.

I don't think people with a healthy relationship with alcohol drink that early in the day, and yes I know a lot of people on here are saying they do it, but I don't think they have healthy relationships with alcohol either. I think a lot of people have low level drink problems in this country and that it's normalised, and that's what we are seeing on this thread.

Do you judge people drinking in the airport like that? Even if their body clock is on a totally different time?

Teenagerantruns · Yesterday 15:23

We had weatherspoons breakfast yesterday after an early appointment. Had coffee with breakfast and then l had a glass of wine...l don't care what people think, its one drink not a bottle, but if l want a bottle at 11am instead of at 11pm what difference is it?

YABU for “washing down” your food with a drink. Sorry, it’s one of those hated phrases I can never remember when I see those threads. I’m glad you enjoyed your pint!

I totally agree.

Along with "peckish " which conjures up a ridiculous image of a human sized, anthropomorphic bird pecking directly with their mouth without hand or cutlery at food from a human plate on a table.

For some reason I dislike people referring to a snack (or, cringe , "little something") "to keep me going" even more - always makes me think of shovelling coal into a steam engine which will come to a stop if it's "stomach" is empty, or a cow or some other kind of ruminant ...

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 15:29

OttersOnAPlane · Yesterday 14:43

If you can't see a problem with 2.5 units of alcohol to start the day, fair enough.

It depends entirely on whether you’re going to drink more, and how much, during the rest of the day. I very very rarely drink alcohol (maybe three or four times a year) , and just about the only time I do is if I’m having breakfast at weatherspoon’s or at the airport. I think it’s a lovely way to start the day.

MeanwhileinGilead · Yesterday 15:35

"Out of character" seems like a strange observation - are you normally a teetotaller? Vocally hate the taste of beer? Are boycotting Guinness? Typically wake up dehydrated and drink only water and juice in the mornings? Always have a really light breakfast? In those cases I can understand why it seems unusual enough to mention.

As for whether or not it's a great way to start the day, you're the best judge of that - and probably the only relevant one unless there's some specific health reason why reason you shouldn't be drinking alcohol at all.

rainbowunicorn22 · Yesterday 15:40

not my choice but if you did not cane it just had one cant think it made much difference

Devongirl1983 · Yesterday 15:43

You can eat and drink anything you want at the weekend! My DH would laugh and wish he’d been there too. If it was a Monday before work, i’d think that’s not normal or healthy.

It’s a sunny Saturday and you can do what you want to enjoy it! When I meet my group for breakfast, we often have mimosas so why not a pint!

I used to live in an Eastern European country and a standard weekday breakfast for alot of us was a slice of bread with butter and salami, an espresso and a little tot of cognac. We'd get it on the way to work from little kiosks.

happy happy days tbh.

(Lunch was a set 3 course menu in the work canteen and would include a little glass of wine).

I'd caveat that by saying no-one operated heavy machinery in my office- but to be fair, I don't think it would have mattered anyway.

Hedgehogbrown · Yesterday 15:50

God that is so British.

Createausername1970 · Yesterday 15:56

I like a Spoons all-day breakfast.

And as the song goes "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere".

Enjoy if it's an irregular treat.

I don't even drink but know this is bollocks - there are any number of actual alcoholics who will declare that they never drink until the sun is over the yardarm/noon/4pm/dinnertime (and therefore cannot have a problem in their eyes - and those of the more gullible).

DoubleDoubleDown · Yesterday 16:18

Why not, it's the weekend. I have Friends staying and I'm very hungover this morning. We will head out for breakfast soon and I'm definitely planning on having at least 2 ceasers ( Canadian version of bloody Mary with clam juice)..yum might even make them double
@BiscuitsCheeseBiscuits I'm intrigued, what do Timmy's in England serve for breakfast?. Can you get a farmer's wrap and a double double?

LemonTyger · Yesterday 16:37

It's perfectly acceptable to drink champagne with breakfast, why not a pint?

It definitely isn’t 😂

OP, I would be concerned for a friend or relative doing this unless it was some sort of special occasion/ celebration breakfast. I can understand why your husband was concerned and probably concerned you might be a secret drinker/ high functioning alcoholic. I’m not saying you are, but it’s totally understandable he’s concerned, drinking with breakfast is an odd thing to do!

Besafeeatcake · Yesterday 17:45

Cherriesandapples1 · Yesterday 12:42

I barely drink but have on very odd occasions had a pint with breakfast, holiday, day out. I am most certainly not an alcoholic. This is not how alcoholism is defined in anyway shape or form

No it certainly isnt.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · Yesterday 17:46

It’s very classy, you should do it every day

@Growlybear83 " I very very rarely drink alcohol (maybe three or four times a year) and just about the only time I do is if I’m having breakfast at weatherspoon’s "

I feel like I'm missing out on something. Can we start a fry up & pint Mumsnet meet up at Spoons.
