To think I can't return this

I bought someone an expensive water bottle as a Christmas gift. Today they handed it back to me and said I should return it because its only single walled so condensation develops on it when they put icy water in and I should try and get a refund. Partly my bad, it didn't claim to be double walled and I didn't think of it when buying, for me it doesn't matter as I just fill from the tap and keep it in my bag on my desk. They maintained this water bottle is not fit for purpose and should be returned under distance selling laws. I don't think I have grounds to return it on this basis. I'm not sure what to do, they insisted they didn't want me out of pocket for something they can't use, but what should I do? I'll happily take it and use it myself if they don't want it. I can't return this item can I? I know this is trivial!!

They are rude! Yes it’s not a big deal, so they should just suck it up

dementedpixie · 11/01/2026 20:59

Keep it for yourself. Dont replace the present as they sound very ungrateful

Brefugee · 11/01/2026 21:00

just keep it for yourself, or is it an Amazon type place where you have a large window for returns and can send back for any reason?

dementedpixie · 11/01/2026 21:00

Did you buy it online? Do you still have the packaging?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 11/01/2026 21:03

What a rude twat. No more presents for them.

Auroraloves · 11/01/2026 21:05

Keep It. Don’t buy them any more presents

DisappointedD · 11/01/2026 21:07

You can’t return it for not being double walled if it didn’t claim to be double walled. Equally, if it holds water and you can drink from it then it’s also fit for purpose as a water bottle.

Your friend sounds like a tit! Amazon would properly refund regardless but I’d just keep it for myself and never buy the friend anything again.

TwistedWonder · 11/01/2026 21:07

What a fucking rude ungrateful twat they are - keep it for yourself and don’t ever buy them a present again

Vodkamartini3olives · 11/01/2026 21:21

They were a bit rude they could have just binned it left it sitting in the back of the cupboard. I do see their point crap water bottles are useless.

GalaxyJam · 11/01/2026 21:26

Just say ‘oh ok, thanks for letting me know’ and keep it for yourself.

It was a shop on ebay, didn't look like a big business but it is a branded bottle. I suppose I could request to return it but its been used (does still have box) I just feel like I can't as I don't have grounds to

GalaxyJam · 11/01/2026 21:27

Why are they so keen for you to return it? Do they want you to buy them something else with the money?

Tulcan · 11/01/2026 21:28

I’d keep it or give it away to someone who needs a bottle and I’d never mention it again.

And I wouldn’t get them any presents again either! And if they said anything about that I’d tell them that I clearly wasn’t very good at presents so I’ve stopped.

Glitterballofdreams · 11/01/2026 21:28

Keep it for yourself and remember not to bother buying for them again. Rude!

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 11/01/2026 21:29

Who the fuck is this mannerless and ungrateful?!

I'd just take it back, say "thanks for letting me know", do nothing and never buy them a gift again.

GAJLY · 11/01/2026 21:31

You can’t send it back as it didn’t claim to be double walled. Only Amazon would accept a return without questions as the window is until the end of this month for Christmas returns. I personally would just keep it. If that person asked for something in exchange just explain that you couldn’t so just kept it.

somanychristmaslights · 11/01/2026 21:36

Yes you can’t send it back if it didn’t claim to be double walled. It’s a water bottle, if you can drink out of it then it’s doing its job! I’d keep it if you want it.

Slothey · 11/01/2026 21:40

I prefer the more basic water bottles, as I don’t want my water super cold, but I do like very light bottles. So it’s totally fine, just not what they wanted.

Edit to add - they’re a rude idiot! Sorry if my initial post didn’t read that way…

PleasingDistance · 11/01/2026 21:58

Thanks all, I'm glad I've not gone mad, I felt totally baffled when they handed it to me and said it was no good, like I'd been an idiot for not checking it was insulated, really didn't occur to me. I suppose they were maybe trying to be nice by saying I should get my money back, it was over £40 (😭) but I just feel its too cheeky to try and get a refund

No I don’t think you can get a refund as it’s been used and there’s nothing wrong with it.

Its as described, just because the ungrateful person you bought it for has decided they’d prefer one that’s double insulated doesn’t mean it should be.

Keep it, never mention it again, don’t buy them any more gifts, they’re rude and ungrateful.

TokyoSushi · 11/01/2026 22:12

Agree that you can’t really send it back. But my goodness, so rude to go back to somebody and make a complaint about an obviously well meaning gift!

Turtlebed · 11/01/2026 22:15

I don't think i even understand what the problem is with the bottle. When the bottle has cold drink it gets condensation on the outside of the bottle? Is that an actual problem people have with bottles?

FrangipaniBlue · 11/01/2026 22:25

They aren’t trying to suggest it might be fake are they?

Just seems such an odd response I wondered if this particular “brand” are normally marketed as insulated/double walled and the recipient is trying to tell you that you’ve been duped/ripped off with a fake?

(I’m clutching at straws……. )

Astra53 · 11/01/2026 22:34

I am astonished your friend felt it was acceptable to hand the gift back to you over something so trivial. Keep the bottle for yourself and enjoy using it. Do not buy your friend any more gifts, or if you do, stick to vouchers.

Now she’s added it was a £40 branded bottle I also had this thought. I very nearly bought a ‘Disney branded Stanley’ for my niece until I googled the design and realised it was fake as Stanley didn’t make that brand.
