To think I can't return this

PleasingDistance · 11/01/2026 20:55

I bought someone an expensive water bottle as a Christmas gift. Today they handed it back to me and said I should return it because its only single walled so condensation develops on it when they put icy water in and I should try and get a refund. Partly my bad, it didn't claim to be double walled and I didn't think of it when buying, for me it doesn't matter as I just fill from the tap and keep it in my bag on my desk. They maintained this water bottle is not fit for purpose and should be returned under distance selling laws. I don't think I have grounds to return it on this basis. I'm not sure what to do, they insisted they didn't want me out of pocket for something they can't use, but what should I do? I'll happily take it and use it myself if they don't want it. I can't return this item can I? I know this is trivial!!

I would imagine if it was from a private seller and it was a Christmas gift yourbreturns window has passed, if the accept returns, I dont. You can raise a case to say goods not as described, counterfeit and see what they say.

Ocelotfeet27 · 12/01/2026 08:42

I would definitely try to send it back given error on back of box and say it's a fake.

Mosaic123 · 12/01/2026 08:44

It's a daft design to have a leather strap on the cap. Leather and water is not a good combination.

The shape is cool though.

I don't think it's a genuine one.

Try getting a refund without sending it back at first.

RollOnSunshine · 12/01/2026 08:49

Tell the recipiant that the water bottle was not missold so they can either use it or give it to the charity shop. Make a mental note not to buy them anything next year.

Bumcake · 12/01/2026 08:50

What a shame, that’s a very thoughtful gift. However, it does read as thought it’s not insulated which wouldn’t work for me as I like my water cold and wouldn’t want other stuff in my bag getting damp from it. I wouldn’t have given it back to you though, that’s just rude.

TheEponymousGrub · 12/01/2026 08:55

Anyway how can you put it in the dishwasher, with a leather strap?

Justwonswards · 12/01/2026 08:57

Details of it is fake. Try this. Other signs of a private seller, would be that the seller has others to sell

TheLadyofShallots · 12/01/2026 08:59

Is it from the manufacturer or a private seller?

If it's a private seller I agree it may be fake if the packaging has errors.

The actual manufacturer is a well known designer- they do lots of silverware - so unlikely they would have a spelling error.

Turtlebed · 11/01/2026 22:15

I don't think i even understand what the problem is with the bottle. When the bottle has cold drink it gets condensation on the outside of the bottle? Is that an actual problem people have with bottles?

Yes because it makes everything else in your bag wet

GAJLY · 12/01/2026 09:06

You could return it if you suspect it’s fake and if they refuse to refund you, use section 75 with your credit card provider. A reputable seller would not have a spelling mistake on the packaging.

A strap which looks like a handle but isn’t strong enough to carry the weight of the bottle either.

Lochroy · 12/01/2026 09:09

Whether or not it’s fake, it’s a little over designed and under engineered so use the potential fakeness as a lucky escape get out.

You can see from the website these are single layer (the translucent ones)

Your friend however is very very rude.

Get them one of these

And keep your beautiful water bottle and don bother buying them anything particularly nice or thoughtful again.

The water.bottle ypu bought is GORGEOUS and I wpuld have loved it

It was a shop on ebay, didn't look like a big business but it is a branded bottle. I suppose I could request to return it but its been used (does still have box) I just feel like I can't as I don't have grounds to

Very little chance on ebay if it's not faulty and you've used it and had it a while.

My3dahliasarebloominlovely · 12/01/2026 09:18

She's not my niece is she? 😉

nosleepforme · 12/01/2026 09:18

Your friend is rude
i dont see anywhere on the site that it’s supposed to be double walled, so unless it’s a fake, it would be absolutely unacceptable to return this used water bottle.

MyDeftDuck · 12/01/2026 09:19

How very ungrateful of them! Keep it for yourself and don’t buy them anything else in future…….ungrateful twats!

a222 · 12/01/2026 09:21

I don’t think anything Georg Jensen would have a typo on the box. I think it’s someone reselling copies on ebay fobbing them off as real to make some money.

Friend should’ve kept quiet, even if it is a fake, it’s poor form when it’s a gift. I feel really bad for you as you bought them a kind gift and now you’ve got the trouble of returning it.

Alittlefrustrated · 12/01/2026 09:25

What is the error on the box?

WhoGrant · 12/01/2026 07:56

They maintained this water bottle is not fit for purpose and should be returned under distance selling laws.

They are wrong 🤣

Only because it has been longer than 14 days. Otherwise they would be right, they definitely could still return it.

Also if that ebay seller has not sent "the geographical address at which the trader is established and, where available, the trader's telephone number, fax number and e-mail address, to enable the consumer to contact the trader quickly and communicate efficiently", they havent complied with the law, and that 14 days hasn’t even started yet. There's a list of information that they are required to have been given otherwise the 14 days won't have started yet. They might have done, but if not then OP isn's past the time yet.

UnhappyHobbit · 12/01/2026 09:37

Goodness me. Does this friend have a tendency to try and undermine you? That’s really rude and ungrateful.

EuclidianGeometryFan · 12/01/2026 09:41

What I really want to know is this:
If you do manage to get a refund, will you be buying this person another present?
If so, why?

PleasingDistance · 11/01/2026 21:58

Thanks all, I'm glad I've not gone mad, I felt totally baffled when they handed it to me and said it was no good, like I'd been an idiot for not checking it was insulated, really didn't occur to me. I suppose they were maybe trying to be nice by saying I should get my money back, it was over £40 (😭) but I just feel its too cheeky to try and get a refund

Edited

Get your money back. They have a point. It should have been double walled. This would bother me.

Namechangerage · 12/01/2026 09:44

What is the typo?

JanBlues2026 · 12/01/2026 09:46

Style over substance. Barely functional, what a ridiculous strap.
