To think I can't return this

PleasingDistance · 11/01/2026 20:55

I bought someone an expensive water bottle as a Christmas gift. Today they handed it back to me and said I should return it because its only single walled so condensation develops on it when they put icy water in and I should try and get a refund. Partly my bad, it didn't claim to be double walled and I didn't think of it when buying, for me it doesn't matter as I just fill from the tap and keep it in my bag on my desk. They maintained this water bottle is not fit for purpose and should be returned under distance selling laws. I don't think I have grounds to return it on this basis. I'm not sure what to do, they insisted they didn't want me out of pocket for something they can't use, but what should I do? I'll happily take it and use it myself if they don't want it. I can't return this item can I? I know this is trivial!!

It's a grammar error on the box, not a typo.

OP, regardless of whether it is a fake or not, this person is VERY rude. You were very thoughtful with your gift, and they should have been more thoughtful to you, recognised how well intentioned you were and said nothing!

ittakes2 · 12/01/2026 09:51

I think the double walled thing is a red flag - you can return it for any reason you want! You could not like colour in real life, it’s too big for your bag etc. return it if you want, keep it if you want

ittakes2 · 12/01/2026 09:51

Or is the issue now you feel like you have to buy them a double walled water bottle?

nomas · 12/01/2026 09:52

OP is right, they are not advertised as double walled.

“No, the popular Georg Jensen SKY stainless steel water bottles are NOT double-walled insulated, they are single-walled, designed for cool drinks and heat retention is limited, quickly heating with hot liquids, unlike true double-wall vacuum bottles. While they keep contents cooler longer than glass, they lack the thermal barrier of vacuum insulation, making them suitable for refreshing drinks rather than long-term temperature control.”

I would try for a refund based on the condensation. If someone bought me a single walled bottle for £42 I would want them to get a refund too but also for them to keep the money.

WhatYouWearing · 12/01/2026 09:53

Did the OP ever say the present was for a friend? I can’t see that. Sounds more like what a narcissistic mother would do 😂

IamnotSethRogan · 12/01/2026 09:54

Uhghg · 12/01/2026 07:45

You spent £40 on a water bottle!!!
Are you mad!!

If it’s slightly different to the description then I would 100% be wanting my money back.

When you said expensive I thought you meant about £15.

Edited

Not to go off topic but I have a water bottle that's about that price. For me it's worth the money as I use it all day (and night) every day, take it on a lot of out door activities, am generally clumsy and drop it all the time and have had it a couple years. £40 for something I use constantly for years doesn't seem wild to me.

After you’ve used it the item needs to be faulty to return it. You can’t wear something for weeks then return it because you don’t like the colour 😳

On eBay, if the seller doesn’t offer returns you can only return an item if it’s faulty or not as advertised.

Alittlefrustrated · 12/01/2026 09:25

What is the error on the box?

It says the stainless steel keeps the liquid "cool for long" rather than "cool for longer" which, is obviously better English, I'm so bloody embarrassed!

NotnowMildrid · 12/01/2026 09:55

She’s used it. Crikey she’s nuts.

Can you say, no, you’ve used it, but you’ll try and return it, but keep it for yourself!

beAsensible1 · 12/01/2026 09:58

You can get a water bottle cozy to absorb the condensation

TY78910 · 12/01/2026 09:59

Long distance selling rules 😂😂 was this bottle specifically marketed for icy drinks with no condensation? Tell them to get a grip

PrettyPickle · 12/01/2026 10:00

I am assuming that you picked this great present, they hadn't told you they specifically wanted a double walled water bottle?

If that is the case then, you are quite correct that you can't return it as its not faulty, it was advertised and sold as single walled and as such you got what you ordered and unfortunately its not with a retailer that accepts unwanted gifts.

They seem a bit entitled and ungrateful in my opinion, they know they have used it, so how could you return it, if its not faulty - as I said...very ungrateful, ungracious and a tad bit petty!

Had your friend specifically asked you for a double walled bottle then that's your bad, just suck it up...who knew people were so fussy about water bottles.

Frostynoman · 12/01/2026 10:01
  1. They are exceptionally rude.
  2. If it is a fake then return it as such and report to eBay
  3. no you can’t return the bottle de to condensation unless it is absolutely excessive and then it is not fit for purpose

Can you share the eBay shop name?

The spelling and grammar on the official GJ shop is perfect, I can’t imagine the grammar on an official product box would be wrong.

I would get a refund and buy a Built bottle. Much cheaper and keeps water cold for ages.

The recipinet has a point. My Built bottles keep water cold for ages with no condensation.

And thank God for distance selling rules.

Okayfenokay · 12/01/2026 10:04

The person who you gave the water bottle to is totally unreasonable and rude.

You are only unreasonable because you said "my bad"

Why are you embarrassed? Who is this person to you? A friend or relative? You’re massively over thinking this.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 12/01/2026 10:06

Rude saying that to you.

Chillijamtoday · 12/01/2026 10:06

Send Georg Jensen customer services a photograph of the typo and ask them about it. I think they will respond as they are a very good company and would definitely want to know if somebody was marketing fakes of their products.

If it does turn out to be a fake then you absolutely should ask for your money back, otherwise I don't think you really have a case. The recipient of the gift is certainly being rude, it's U to keep a gift that long then complain.

I do think it's a beautiful water bottle, my main reservation would be that the stainless steel would get scratched very easily. I have a single skinned water bottle myself that's metal, it never gets condensation, but that's because I only use it for water from the tap and don't try to put over-chilled drinks in it.

The rules are great. But in this scenario the recipient is clutching at straws.

HopeGraceFaith · 12/01/2026 10:10

I had a similar thing happen with a "casio" calculator after I went to sell it on elsewhere and they reported it fake. I went back to the ebay seller, after checking the listing, because they were listing it as genuine. I said I would report it as a fake listing and they gave me either a full or partial refund without needing to post back the product.

The person is rude and ungrateful in my opinion. Even if they had concerns about it being fake etc, there's a way to talk about that kindly. "Mean what you say. Say what you mean. Don't be mean when you say it". You're not the one that needs to be embarrassed. The shame is on them. If they are so insecure that a "fake" product is beneath them and offensive, they really have issues.

I don't want to name the shop as might have been a genuine mistake on their part, they sell lovely homewares and had 100% positive feedback so it being a knock off didn't even cross my mind. I have messaged them saying I think it could be counterfeit and requested a refund so I'll see. I left the box at their house though so I'll need to go and get it so provide evidence it might not be genuine. The leather looks real though and the quality of the bottle itself looks excellent. If it is fake it's very convincing bar the error, you'd think they'd spell check the packaging, there's a little booklet with it and the tags look good. This is so humiliating though

Also - the shop wasn't selling dozens of them, they only had one in stock and same with other similar items they had, it looked like a real life gift shop that has an ebay page for extra sales so I just assumed it was legit

I was wondering if I should contact Georg Jensen for this reason
