DUMB SHIT People say

I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

How rude of her!

NormasArse · 05/01/2026 22:36

I can always tell it’s you because of your weird walk…

(before my double hip replacement).

Lordofthewing · 05/01/2026 22:37

first time out of the house 2 weeks postpartum with a very traumatic birth. Bumped into a far- related relative who looked me up and down and exclaimed “god you look rough as shit”. Cheers for that love!

scorpiogirly · 05/01/2026 22:37

Clumsy but a compliment. Have you tried alpha h liquid gold or ketsugo gel? If not, give them a go as they might help.

PoorUncleBarry · 05/01/2026 22:38

Oh op, thats awful. A friend of mine from prayer group (who is a lovely lovely lady) said the same thing to me that was said to you. I also have cystic acne and makeup exacerbates it. Regardless, I was desperately insecure and slapped it on for one prayer group and my friend (Susan or whatever lol) said "Oh my God, you look so much better, you actually look well!" and I was too gobsmacked to do anything other than bloody whisper cystic acne scars. People really do say dumb shit.

My 4 year old DD couldn’t walk, sometimes used a wheelchair or sometimes a buggy as it came with waterproof cover for poor weather.
My DD was whinging/crying in the buggy, Lollipop lady on the school run who had seen us every day for a year or so said “I bet she wishes she could just walk.” I presume meaning rather than being stuck in the buggy when she appeared too big for one.
I said “Yes I wish she could walk too!”

Purplebunnie · 05/01/2026 22:43

@Lordofthewing

Although this is sidetracking as it wasn't actually said to me at the time but a similar story. Met one of the other girls from anti-natal and she told me some time later that when she met me whilst she was still pregnant and I was about 2 weeks postpartum that she went home and cried after seeing me I looked that bad

fabulousx · 05/01/2026 22:44

Most dumb shit and batshit crazy things ive heard are right here on MN.

Everyone recommends everything. I’ve tried literally it all. The only thing I need is roaccutane but I have a history of depression. I don’t see how I could ever take what she said as a compliment.

For me it’s always women too which surprises me. This past year a woman examined me and I said I’m embarrassed about my stretch marks and she said you could have them surgically removed and she’d never seen as many all over. Really? Not ohhh don’t worry we all have them. I was told I need filler in my frown lines apparently as they are deep. Didn’t ask for the recommendation that’s what she “does” when I saw an aesthetics doctor about my SKIN. Not filler. I could go on….

Sorry did this lady know you and your child? As that takes the biscuit if she does

I have cancer. I don't tend to tell people unless necessary. But the amount of people who will then launch into a tale about Auntie Violet/Uncle Fester who died a terrible death with that exact cancer. Just why? I'm shit with people and small talk yet even I realise that's totally inappropriate.

I hope you got your new hips and walk better than Cindy Crawford on a catwalk to stick the finger up to them

@OneDearFawn There is a certain irony in your OP. Are you not aware that the word 'dumb' is highly offensive in the context you have used it? Maybe consider your own words before criticising others.

francii · 05/01/2026 22:52

“Are you male?” Said to me, a biological female, in the women’s toilets last week. I wasn’t looking particularly feminine that day but that’s not really the point. Fuck off and let me pee in androgynous peace.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/01/2026 22:53

Ooh twins. Are they natural?

Definitely, just why? Not nearly the same level as you but my dad was recently in hospital with prostate issues so catheterised. In the waiting room the guy next to him was telling him he’d had to have his bladder out, permanent catheter could never wee again and it was a blood bath weekly getting a new one in and out. My face as he’s recounting this story and he doesn’t pick up the social que!

I wish you all the best with your treatment and I don’t blame you for not wanting to unload ♥️and go through it privately

It’s one of those do you mean it as a massive compliment but not realise how rude. I’m glad you look “normal” 😉

A few years back, my MH was really really bad, i was rock bottom and attempted unsuccessfully (thankfully) to end everything, I couldn’t eat for a few weeks just lost appetite, lost a good few pounds, walked into the shop and a worker asked me “Are you sick? You look awful sick” it really upset me. I just came through the worst time of my life , and still recovering.
People don’t realise how one small comment can upset you and make you overthink and make you feel like shit regardless of what is going on in your life.

It's alright, when I start vocally or physically stimming or my echolalia comes out to play, or I have a meltdown, they soon realise how fucking idiotic they've been 😂
