DUMB SHIT People say

I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

Ok but tbf, I do actually know two brothers in the same school year who are not twins. They are 11 months apart in age. One born in September, one born in August.
It's unusual, but it can occasionally work out that way.

Is it not usually a year between start and end dates for school? Scotland im sure end is 28th Feb then 1st March. So could happen here as well.

“ I’d look massive in that” my much thinner-than-me friend saying to me wearing a dress I had tried on in a shop

My sister, who got wet during a summer water fight and asked to borrow one of my t-shirts.

"Omg, look this is so funny, look how big it is on me! Haha I could go camping in this!!"

And then when everyone looked awkwardly at each other and didn't say anything she carried on;

"But look! Look! Look at all the room! It's so funny, its like a tent, I feel like I'm wearing a bag or something, it's SO BIG!!"

She has absolutely no filter whatsoever.

In England, you start school the first September you are 4.
So you could turn 5 any time from 1st September, right up to 31st August and still be in the same year.
People in the next year up could be a single minute older than you. That's just where the cut off is.
So siblings that are less than a year apart (which I think is fairly unusual but happens) can be in the same school year.

This family I know have two boys in year one who are 11 months apart, another boy in year 2 who is just a year older and a boy in reception. The mum had a baby every 11-13 months.

Yeah scotland its 5 you start. Well if you are going to turn 5 between those dates I mentioned you start. So my oldest was 4 was November born. Youngest will be 5 when she starts as May.

Sorry for going off topic.

I will put my hand up & say that I said something stupid, years ago, & I'm still mortified about it now!

I'd been working in my job for a while but it was our first big socializing event, so the first chance to really chat to each other.

One woman, (who I really liked!) was talking about her 18 year old daughter so I asked how old she was & she replied 'I'm 46' & I replied 'Really? I didn't think that you were that old! I thought that you were about 30, you only look 30, you don't look as old as 46!'

Just like that. I'm cringing just writing it.

She laughed it off & informed me that the sentiment was nice but the way that I'd just said that was the wrong way to say it, she then got up & left me to think about it & I realised what I'd done.

Mortified, & I've never said anything like it since. (I'm now ancient, at 44, myself)

Doesn’t sound such a terrible thing to have said. **

3 months after my lovely husband died of a heart attack i was at friends daughters gender reveal party. Known him over 40 years been at many family parties with my husband and children. His mum turned to me and said ..oh I hear whats it died, are you over it now?. I was speechless and just walked away. People have said many dumb things to me about him over the last year but that was the worst.

Thats unbelievable. Nothing you can do other than walk away. So sorry for your loss.

pineapplecrushed · 09/01/2026 10:55

A roll on anitbiotic - clindamycin - for your face? I suffered for years, it's horrible, and I know everyone recommends something, it's annoying, but people just want you to not suffer with it anymore. Clindamycin worked for me, but it took a month to get going.

I'm sorry for that. Even family members can be arseholes.... so many people lack self-awareness. You wouldn't have been the only one to notice how mean that was, and she is likely v unhappy about aspects of herself.

My DPs mother after my first DC was born said "Of course she's not a proper grandchild".

Because DD had half sibilngs that were her GC, she jumped to the conclusion that new GC would be a half GC. We laughed about it as she was not the cleverest, but then DP explained the genetics to her and she did eventually accept DC as a 'proper' GC .

@Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar
I have a friend that does this! She borrowed a dressing gown from me one weekend when she was staying over. She spent most of the first day exclaiming how massive it was on her, at absolutely every opportunity. In the end I said that I'd had it from when I was much much bigger than I am now and that it was big on me too, but if it was a problem for her, then she could just put it back where she found it! She said it was OK and didn't mention it again. The thing is, she's been bigger and hated it when her very rude and cruel mother used to have a go at her for it! We're still friends, but I call her out on this kind of stuff now, as she does have form for not thinking before she opens her trap!

Everyone is on the (autistic) spectrum.

No. Fuck off.

I wish the earth was flat so I could push them off.

Me in my days when I was considerably more overweight, helping myself to some cake at a buffet.
Woman in line behind me: ‘you don’t look like you need that’.

Thanks love.

You've reminded me of years ago at a new years party and a good few drinks down, I was stood at the buffet table and my mil came over and said 'that's the problem with alcohol, it makes you eat too much! 🥲

Beautitul · 09/01/2026 14:44

@WashedUpInAustin it sounds very obvious you meant it well, she was awkward tbh and wanted to be offended.

WashedUpInAustin · 09/01/2026 14:57

Beautitul & Bleachedjeans Thank you, maybe it wasn't so bad then! She was a very loud person so I remember feeling humiliated as everybody looked at me after her response & walking off.

Maybe for all these years I've felt bad for no reasonGrin

I would bet they looked at you wondering if you're ok because she was so dramatic in her huffy exit .. if you told me i looked 16 years younger I wouldn't care if you'd called my bio age ancient.. honestly dont sweat it a moment longer xx

Or she could have a stepdaughter and daughter the same age. Or two adopted, or one adopted and one her own, both the same age. So it's not an odd question.

Laurmolonlabe · 09/01/2026 18:35

I worked in the City one morning i wasn't feeling well and didn't get around to my makeup- people were saying I looked terrible all day- I dialled back my make up to practically nothing from then on, if they didn't like the real me it was their loss.

The13thFairy · 10/01/2026 07:05

And the women who've looked at me when I'm not at my best and said, 'Oh, you look exactly how I feel!' It's so malicious but I've never had a snappy comeback ready.

WashedUpInAustin · 10/01/2026 11:33

Thank you Beautitul I definitely feel better about it now!

Reading through the thread, some of these comments are awful. Especially the baby loss onesFlowers

When I was pregnant with my first I was incredibly anxious throughout & my ex was chatting to his friend about me being so worried. He replied 'Well if this one dies then you can just make another one so tell her it's stupid to worry'.

PurpleSky300 · 10/01/2026 19:39

"You'd be interested in dancing / skiing / skydiving / whatever / when you've got five stone off you"

"You'd be happier with a few stone gone"

And, now I'm on Mounjaro:

"Not much sign of it working yet?".

Just fuck off, don't need to hear this every day.

PurpleSky300 · 10/01/2026 19:45

Once, when I was at uni, I was in the communal laundry area at night and was bending down to put my washing in the drum.

Some girl was sniggering behind me and must have been pointing out the size of my bum or something, but her boyfriend was silent. And then he said something like, "Well, perhaps it's not her best angle" and then left. I like to think he upgraded from that girl!

YelramBob · 10/01/2026 20:00

I took nine months off work for cancer treatment, when I returned I obviously looked different. Many customers, upon seeing me realised what had happened but a few were like 'Oh, why did you get your hair cut short? You looked so much better with long blond hair!' 🙄

I told one guy that I just fancied shaving my head for a laugh 🫠

ChristineKo · 10/01/2026 22:24

I had an intestinal infection and lost 30 lbs, I was so so sick. When I was at the doctor's a nurse said, "I want what you have, I'd love to lose weight" 😑

Blabladebla · 11/01/2026 07:02

When my neighbour asked why my 8 month old wasn't talking yet....

"Is she slow?"

I was too shocked to respond
