If u are a mum to a child in year 1 how old are u? Just cos I feel so old. I’m almost 42

I'll be 39 when DD starts Y1 but 42 when DS starts. A full decade older than my own DMum when I was that age.

DMum is 63 and MIL is only 55 now so I feel OLD!

No point stressing about something you can't change though.

I felt that in my area growing up lots of mums were young, but as soon as I got to Uni that changed massively - many of my peers had much older parents. I was the first in my family to go to Uni though whereas for them it was the norm.

Galadali · 10/12/2025 20:50

I was 51 when my youngest was in year 1. Other parents ranged from mid 20s to late 40s.

blankcanvas3 · 10/12/2025 20:51

I was 22 when DS was in year 1 and I’ll be 36 when DD1 is in year 1, can’t work out how old I’ll be when DD2 is in year 1 but older than 36! So the range will be quite big, I think you’ll be fairly average tbh

Tdcp · 10/12/2025 20:51

Not there yet but I will be 44

FortunesFool · 10/12/2025 20:52

I’m 45 and DH is 49.

With DC1 I was 42.

PonyMcBony · 10/12/2025 20:53

I was 22 with my eldest and 45 with my youngest. I also had a grandchild in the same class (!)

It will vary massively depending where in the country you are.

Here it is typically between 35 and 45.

It is where I live too. Most of us had our children between 35-39, so 40-45 when kids in Year 1. Mid fifties as they head off to uni/graduate 😭… like everyone else, though.

SweetMotherofAbrahamLincoln · 10/12/2025 20:53

I was 31 with my eldest and 34 with my youngest when they were year one

FunMustard · 10/12/2025 20:54

My sister will be 42 when her oldest is in Y1.

I was 32 I think?

Rituelec · 10/12/2025 20:55

I was 20 when the eldest was year 1 and 35 with the youngest

Hoppinggreen · 10/12/2025 20:55

With DD I was 37 and was not the oldest, in fact there were quite a few Mums a similar age
With DS I was 41 and was the oldest but not by much, it was never an issue though

Pineappleice43 · 10/12/2025 20:55

35

Unicornsandprincesses · 10/12/2025 20:55

40

having spoken to mums in my class, there are a few around the 25-30 mark, but most are 35-40 and there are several who are 40+ with older kids and the yr1 kid is their youngest.

(that’ll be me in 3-4 years when my youngest is in yr1)

Mumsgirls · 10/12/2025 20:55

I was 32 and 36, daughter is 41 and done

Blackoutbeans · 10/12/2025 20:55

35 with my first, 40 with my second.

Currently the mums here seem to average somewhere around early to mid 30's

Royaly82 · 10/12/2025 20:57

20 with my eldest and was 38 with my youngest (had two other DC in-between as well)

jjpollypocket · 10/12/2025 20:58

I’ll be 37/38 when my youngest goes into year one. I was 22 with my eldest!

Ballondor · 10/12/2025 20:59

Year 1 here - I’m 43.

Vodka1 · 10/12/2025 21:00

34

HoneyParsnipSoup · 10/12/2025 21:00

I was 31/32.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 10/12/2025 21:01

I was 25 when dd1 was in y1 and 28 when dd2 was. I was on the younger end but not the youngest. The oldest were probably early 40s, but they tended to be the parents who had several older children and these were their youngest ones in y1. This was a while ago as the dds are 20 and 17. I think now the average age would be older as over the last 10 years or so people have started having kids later and later.

lackingfestiveinspo · 10/12/2025 21:01

I’m 32 with DC1 and will be 34 with DC2. A mix of ages at DCs school are the norm.

HettyCletter · 10/12/2025 21:01

My DS is in Y1 and I’m 39. Some mums are younger than me and some older.

When my eldest was in Y1 I was 35. When my youngest is in Y1 I’ll be 44.

distinctpossibility · 10/12/2025 21:01

I was 29 with my first and then 36 with my fourth. Varies massively but you are definitely not old.

AnotherDayanotherNameChangeX · 10/12/2025 21:02
