We don’t have the death penalty. That’s why.

Monty34 · 03/12/2025 16:48

Because too many innocent people die that way.
And you cannot bring them back and apologise.

We used to have hanging. A young man with learning difficulties was hanged and it caused uproar. Ditto the last woman to be hanged. A victim of DV.
Yes you hang guilty people but innocent ones too.
It was abolished because people became unhappy with it.
Imagine being accused of something you didn't do. And being sentenced to death for it.

Youdontseehow · 03/12/2025 16:49

It would be the easy way out for him. So it’s better he lives out a miserable existence.

HermioneWeasley · 03/12/2025 16:49

I don’t know. Where there’s no doubt (like Axel Rudakabana) I think we should have the death penalty

100% get rid

There have been too many cases "where there is no doubt" which later proved to be wrong.

How many innocent people are we happy to hang in the name of some people's lust for revenge?

He is getting 3 meals a day in a warm cell with TV
Access to gym .library study
That is better than being hung

Indianajet · 03/12/2025 16:53

No, we have no right to take a life.

SerendipityJane · 03/12/2025 16:54

And you cannot bring them back and apologise.

Of course you can. I mean it does fuck all, but I am sure there are some benefit claimants who should be exhuming the wrongly executed according to the MN hive mind.

(If anyone wants to report this comment, it's sarcasm level is high)

MightyFlow · 03/12/2025 16:54

Because cases like that of Peter Sullivan? 38 years in prison for murder before DNA proved he was innocent.

So presumably you accept there are people in jail for murder where there is doubt ?

Charming.

Because he apparently has human rights, despite waiving them when he did what he did. That's why.

Indianajet · 03/12/2025 16:53

No, we have no right to take a life.

But he had the right to take away kids' innocence and screw them up for life, didn't he?

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 03/12/2025 16:56

Don't be so daft. He didn't have the right, which is why he's going to prison.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/12/2025 16:58

We can't have the death penalty.

It's inhuman, and we're better than that monster.

Squishedpassenger · 03/12/2025 16:59

I more think of people like Sharon Carr when it comes to this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharon_Carr

I just think that she can never be released and it is cruel to keep someone institutionalised as a criminal for their entire adult life. I guess Axel would fit into that, too. I don't think he has a chance of rehabilitation.

I think the court of protection should decide these cases and whether some form of euthanasia is more ethical.

I feel differently about someone who receives a whole life sentence as an adult. I think they should just die in prison.

You think he'd be jailed for something he had a right to do?

Paedophiles don't tend to last long in prison, à la Ian Watkins.

hattie43 · 03/12/2025 16:59

There’s a lot of people who should hang to be fair .

It's high on whataboutery, and it's high on attempting sarcasm.

Maybe next time.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/12/2025 17:00

My grandmother used to watch the news and announce "hanging's too good for him". I took her literally, and still do. Hanging would be too good for him. Hangings ends your life, but because you're then dead you don't feel it, only the people around you are still alive to feel it.

No, my preferred option is that they should have a long and unhappy life in prison, knowing there is zero possibility of parole, knowing everyone you encounter in prison thinks you're less than human, knowing only death will end your punishment.

Hanging's too good for him.

Bagsintheboot · 03/12/2025 17:01

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 03/12/2025 16:59

Try again, there are an awful lot of paedophiles in prison who have been there a very long time.

People should not be hung to satisfy some people's perverse bloodlust.

Mandarinaduck · 03/12/2025 17:01

He might deserve the death penalty but we all don't. We deserve to live in a society that minimises violence. It shouldn't be on any one's job description to execute another human.

Lurkingandlearning · 03/12/2025 17:02

I wonder how many of the people who want capital punishment to be returned would be willing to pull the lever. Not who will bluster hypothetically that would be happy to, but who would actually kill the convict.

Instructions · 03/12/2025 17:02

Because principles matter even when it is hard and painful to stick to them

The death penalty is wrong and it is as wrong for people who do great evil as for anyone else

I would not feel the world had lost anything if he died; I would still not want state sanctioned killing
