I’d prefer it, if they could do something useful for society and be used for testing new medications…I mean there might be a few ethical hoops to jump through, but you know ‘for the greater good’ and all that!

You don't waive human rights unless he turned into a different species by what he did. They are rights that you have by virtue of being human. Just human. Not a good human or not even not a completely terrible human. Completely terrible humans are still human and still need protection from the arbitrary power of the state (or the powerful whoever that may be).

There are so many arguments against the death penalty and I think people have heard them so often that it's really pointless listing them again.

For me the crux is that we are who we are just by the luck of the draw. More importantly maybe, a society that sanctions killing is pretty much always not very good to the living either.

So why is it that we have state-sponsored assisted dying now? And we've now made abortion legal up to the point of birth?

It sounds a lot like we don't really value life when we not only push for the elderly to be allowed to die, abort full term babies and then let humans that take lives or at least the innocence of lives and then allow them to carry on breathing the same air of those they wronged.

What the hell is going on with the people in this damn country?

What the hell is going on with the people in this damn country?

They are slowly being allowed to have their voices heard in complex moral and ethical issues rather than being told what to think by an authoritarian government and dogmatic enshrined religious institution ?

Might be an answer ?

I would love a referendum - there are a lot of things that need a democratic decision that us plebs feel very very very strongly about.

Less than a minute ago I just typed "If the UK never has another referendum again it would be too soon".

Referendums rarely solve anything. As 2016 proved.

For as long as I’ve read we’ve never hung rapists. 🙄. Or not for many, many decades.

Rape ceased to be a capital crime in 1841.

It would be beyond petty pedantry to say that meat is hung, men are hanged 😀
