Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

Can’t say you weren’t warned (not you specifically, but anyone who spoke out was called racist).

This is it 🤷‍♀️

Tummyrum · 29/09/2025 14:57

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

Does Veganism demand animals have their throats slit?

Of course I don’t. That’s a ludicrous comparison. And you know it.

I don't think the carrots and cabbages are ritually slaughtered without stunning, left to bleed to death whilst being prayed over.....

Cel77 · 29/09/2025 14:59

Why are you bothered and concerned on a personal level?

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/09/2025 14:59

You have a say, eat somewhere else (Five Guys is so expensive anyway!). They’re businesses and have worked out that serving everyone minus people who don’t want to eat halal is more profitable than everyone minus Muslims. It’s not rocket science. And it’s not some deep conspiracy.

I think there’s a small argument for places you can’t avoid as easily (like school dinners). I still think it’s a mountain out of a molehill. But with businesses, you just avoid.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/09/2025 15:01

Oh and all the people who do eat meat that isn’t halal. Do you genuinely think you’re bothered about animal welfare? Like, really? Have you seen non-halal abattoirs? Farms for meat animals? They aren’t very nice.

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 15:01

Because I think allowing a minority religion to have such reach that all meat in the country is slaughtered in a barbaric fashion and unwillingly fed to us is deeply concerning?

Halfaday · 29/09/2025 15:01

The difference between meat and halal meat means squat all to me. Both involve some pretty unpleasant processes to get there that I prefer not to think about and instead I just enjoy!

They dont kill the carrots in a barbaric way. Halal slaughter should not be allowed in the UK, British Veterinary Society are against it.

mugglewump · 29/09/2025 15:02

Because most non-Muslims don't give a monkey's about the type of meat, but most Muslims do? The animals are stunned before the slaughter so there is no real difference. Either you think killing animals for food is wrong or you don't. Don't make your religious prejudice about the animals please.

Well at least they’re prayed over!

pretty sure my Sainsbury’s non halal steak tonight didn’t involve the abattoir workers praying!!

Aren’t the British vegetarian society against…. Meat? The end?

ridl14 · 29/09/2025 15:04

I don't think your opinion is problematic or islamophobic but I really don't get the issue with halal meat. I don't eat meat and I don't think an animal bleeding out from a slit throat is any less gentle than mass-produced meat from slaughterhouses. I find the distinction really odd tbh!

But agree with a pp it will be easier and likely more profitable to serve halal meat, which most meat eaters will eat.

I’m sure they’re comforted by prayer as their throats are slit.

Nice to have the religious beliefs of a minority being forced onto others without choice, isn’t it.

I don’t typically remember user names. I do yours. Bit of a special subject for you, this type of thread.

And for the hyperbolic spiral you’re in; it’s not all meat, you can avoid it, all meat production is barbaric.

And you would know as obviously you’re very invested in your opinion too.

You might want to re-read that…

JHound · 29/09/2025 15:06

It’s just business. They want to make sure they don’t miss out on a section of potential customers: be it Britons or tourists.

I don’t care.

<eyeroll>

Bands of terrifying Muslims are forcing people with whips and screaming into Five Guys. Oh no sorry, you can just go somewhere else or have the (delicious) fries.

Both options involve the end of life. And pretty brutally

and that’s that.

Yes all of this nobody cares where their mass produced meat for five guys or any other chain comes from, not a hoot ! Halal though.

Think of it this way.

If you were going to be killed would you prefer to be conscious during the process or not?
