Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

@FoodieBoobie I am not going to answer questions about everything I eat. I have explained my thoughts above.

And I've pointed out the flaws and illogic of your thoughts.

Cookiecrumblepie · 07/10/2025 19:38

@FoodieBoobie no you haven’t. I’m not going to be pulled into an argument. I just want to retain the option to have non halal meat. I don’t see why it’s such an issue

Kendodd · 07/10/2025 19:42

Thing is, in their religion there is a certain process and prayer to God when slaughtering an animal for meat. Muslims can also eat meat slaughtered and prayed by Christians and Jews providing they pray to god.

I assume you're an atheist and not taking the "I only want my religion prayed over this food". As an atheist a Muslim prayer has no effect on your meat you eat if the meat is halal.

You assumed right, I am an atheist Smile
It makes absolutely no difference either way what is playing on the radio. Actually, I take that back, hasn't calming music been shown the calm animals (?) I would prefer that was played.

I sometimes buy my meat from an organic, ethical farm. Unfortunately they all go to the same slaughterhouse but they lead much better lives and they're Belted Galloways which improve biodiversity in the area.

They allow them to graze at specific times to grow more wildflowers.

Surely those who wish to be more ethical have means to do so.

Yes I have. I've clearly shown how you are wrong and your thought process is illogical. I'll use the example of if your hotel breakfast was serving Hovis instead of Warburton would you care? They are both just bread.

Cookiecrumblepie · 08/10/2025 12:11

@FoodieBoobie I am not wrong, I just have a different preference to you, which doesn't have to make sense to you. I might want hovis, just because. Why do I need to justify my bread choice to you? My point is, I want to retain my choice.

Why do you want to forbid prayer in slaughterhouses?

Whitestrawberryflower · 21/01/2026 21:02

I'd rather eat the contents of my cats litter tray than eat halal.

What effect do you think a prayer or blessing has on the food you eat?

The petition seems to be calling for labelling of stunned and non-stunned meat; nothing to do with prayers. I haven’t signed because I think the Government has higher priorities right now, but I don’t think it’s a terrible idea.

If that is what you think, I can only suppose that your are not aware that Halal meat must have a prayer said. It does not have to be slaughtered unstunned, and your local supermarket is likely to be selling meat from normal UK slaughterhouses run to normal UK standards.

Perhaps you are thinking of Kosher meat, which is always killed unstunned.

ShowMeTheSea · 22/01/2026 02:25

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/09/2025 15:01

Oh and all the people who do eat meat that isn’t halal. Do you genuinely think you’re bothered about animal welfare? Like, really? Have you seen non-halal abattoirs? Farms for meat animals? They aren’t very nice.

Yeah, this is what I don't get.
You're eating animals. You don't care that animals are getting killed and end up on your plate. You're eating them anyway?!
Bit "kill them but only the way I tell you to."
You're both killing them Confused
<disclaimer> I'm not vegan or vegetarian

Do you never eat takeaways? Most are halal.
Drink water?
Eat chips?
Halal just means "allowed."

I am aware of that - I am not stupid and don’t appreciate your patronising tone here.

I don’t have an issue with stunned halal meat. Makes no difference to me if a prayer has been said in the slaughterhouse or not. I would prefer to avoid the (limited) amount of unstunned halal meat, for the same reason I wouldn’t eat kosher meat.

The petition is about labelling stunned and unstunned meat. Not about banning prayers.

Damnloginpopup · 22/01/2026 08:01

I don't care. Meat is meat.

But it was the petition that reactivated the thread.

Anyway, we aren’t going to agree and your attitude is annoying me so let’s move on.

Augarden · 22/01/2026 10:29

If there are standards for humans slaughter there should be no exceptions for religious requirements, I absolutely agree. However, most halal meat slaughtered in the UK IS stunned beforehand anyway. More details here: www.farmersguide.co.uk/business/food-drink/industry-reacts-to-claims-about-halal-meat-in-uk-supermarkets/

PigletJohn · 22/01/2026 10:32

Religious and racist hatred being stirred up with a false figleaf of animal protection,

RBowmama · 22/01/2026 11:42

You do have a say, don't eat there. Why should companies not be able to do what they want and give you a say.... and Muslims don't demand but they do appreciate having more options. Makes a difference to them and there's obviously a demand and thats how business works. If you don't like it go to McDonald's.

RBowmama · 22/01/2026 11:45

And I don't think anyone that eats meat can be so self-righteous. The whole meat eating practice is unethical and inhumane. No idea if OP is vegetarian or not but this applies given some of the comments on this thread.

Bertiebiscuit · 09/03/2026 23:53

Which is ridiculous.
1)we can criticise any faith /religion for any reason, it's called Free Speech. We do not have blasphemy laws in the UK although i get that Labour party would like us to.
2)Islam is a faith /belief system NOT a race or ethnicity so criticising it is not racist.

Equally people can criticise the hypocrites for double standards.

Armchair anti-halal warriors by day, halal chicken shop noshers at night.
