Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

I’ve just seen that my kids school is now all halal meat. I’m quite surprised by the change.

What effect does a prayer, that you don't hear, have on you?

Cookiecrumblepie · 07/10/2025 17:24

@PigletJohn I don’t believe in it.

I remember my uncle worked in an (non halal) abattoir as a cleaner he said it was the most horrific place and lasted 3 weeks these animals are distressed no amount of stunning will help them have a better death.

This.

They're all dying horribly. Most people on here are supporting that via consumption which makes this obsession with halal being cruel absolutely ridiculous.

If you don’t like animals dying horribly, don’t eat them, because violent death is never pleasant. That’s why we have pets euthanised rather than slaughtered.

PigletJohn · 07/10/2025 17:24

@cookiecrumblepie

Do you mean "none?"

I don’t know what you mean? I am just surprised that all the meat I my kids school is halal. I was under the impression that halal meat is not the norm in the uk.

There was a prayer said in the slaughterhouse. That has no effect on you. Why do you care?

Cookiecrumblepie · 07/10/2025 17:38

@PigletJohn because I don’t want to eat meat that has had a prayer said over it.

PigletJohn · 07/10/2025 17:41

I walk round my town. When I see a food truck I call on Mythras to bless it, and the people who eat it.

You wouldn't know I've done it.

Cookiecrumblepie · 07/10/2025 17:46

@PigletJohn but if I had a choice, I would choose non halal. I don’t want that choice taken away. It’s my choice, it doesn’t have to make sense to you.

The far right in Britain prefers to attack Muslims. When you see them spreading false stories and arranging mobs to attack and try to burn down refugee hostels, they are very clear that they see Islam as the enemy.

They occasionally try to whip up hatred by claiming that Halal meat in your school or supermarket was slaughtered without stunning. This is generally untrue. It is mostly slaughtered to the normal UK standards. It becomes Halal when somebody recites a prayer. Which makes no difference at all to the animal.

Because they are trying to stir up hatred against Muslims, they try to skip over the fact that Halal meat in the shops is mostly humanely slaughtered, and Kosher meat is always unstunned.

A hundred years ago the far right liked to attack Jews, now they mostly attack Muslims.

The hatred has not changed, only the target.

They don't mind that the story they are spreading is false.

I went to Dishoom yesterday and had some halal chicken and halal lamb. It tasted fabulous.

Thing is, wanting a prayer said over it makes no sense either.

Why not? It has no impact on you at all. You can still eat it. If I was a chef in a restaurant you frequented and after making your dish (let's say a pork loin) and I said in the kitchen "may God bless the customer eating this dish and may they find nourishment from my meal" would you then be "hurr durr. Send it back. I don't want it."

Objecting certainly doesn't

I gather you have never been to a formal dinner where somebody says grace.

I have. I join in and say Amen even though I'm a Hindu

Exactly! I'm not Hindu but I love the 'Om' at the end of my yoga class. I can feel it throughout my body.

I do yoga and I personally find it very helpful health wise and also helps me spiritually. Very happy you join in with the "Om". No obligation to, but very happy you choose to.

Kendodd · 07/10/2025 17:53

Thing is, in their religion there is a certain process and prayer to God when slaughtering an animal for meat. Muslims can also eat meat slaughtered and prayed by Christians and Jews providing they pray to god.

I assume you're an atheist and not taking the "I only want my religion prayed over this food". As an atheist a Muslim prayer has no effect on your meat you eat if the meat is halal.

Cookiecrumblepie · 07/10/2025 18:38

What everyone is missing is the fact that I lose my personal choice. Whether it has an effect on me or not is up to me. I want my choice. I don't want that taken away. I have no issue with others choosing to eat halal but I may not want to and I want that choice.

Skybluepinky · 07/10/2025 18:43

Terrible, funny that the minorities are becoming dictators!

PigletJohn · 07/10/2025 18:57

You don't want to eat food that has had a prayer said over it.

Regardless of the religion?

Cookiecrumblepie · 07/10/2025 19:00

@PigletJohn you are still trying to understand why I don’t want to eat halal meat rather than just accepting that I should have a right not to want it.

If you're ordered a fruit salad do you want or care about the choice of pink lady Vs granny Smith apples.

But that is a mad analogy - they taste completely different! Which does not apply to meat in terms of how it is slaughtered.

Cookiecrumblepie · 07/10/2025 19:08

@FoodieBoobie I am not going to answer questions about everything I eat. I have explained my thoughts above.
