Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

Oh and all the people who do eat meat that isn’t halal. Do you genuinely think you’re bothered about animal welfare? Like, really? Have you seen non-halal abattoirs? Farms for meat animals? They aren’t very nice.

Well of course. I eat meat. Doesn’t mean I wish animals to suffer any more than necessary.

And it is annoying because there have been times recently where we have had to buy halal meat. It’s the cheaper option in supermarkets and some months have been tough. Personally I think it should be banned.

I'm sure the dead animals appreciate your sympathies as you're tucking into their carcass

You have a say, eat somewhere else (Five Guys is so expensive anyway!). They’re businesses and have worked out that serving everyone minus people who don’t want to eat halal is more profitable than everyone minus Muslims. It’s not rocket science. And it’s not some deep conspiracy.

I think there’s a small argument for places you can’t avoid as easily (like school dinners). I still think it’s a mountain out of a molehill. But with businesses, you just avoid.

I think you’re right most people won’t object.

I am increasingly finding I’m “forced” to eat vegetarian when I go out because I won’t eat halal meat. You’re right the idea of any abattoir is horrible, but I really don’t like the idea of animals hanging around bleeding and suffering - there have been some awful articles about bad practices in abattoirs so whilst the best stunning practices might be okay, they are not always followed.

It makes me feel physically sick thinking about it - I know it’s psychological but as soon as I see the word “Halal” I start thinking about animals bleeding to death and then I don’t want to eat any animal products at all.

Vegetarian food in restaurants usually feels like a rip-off (cheaply made and poorly thought out meals which are priced almost same as a meat equivalent).

So increasingly I don’t eat out at all, I cook lovely food at home (farm shop which has its own abattoir you can actually visit).

If forced to eat out have a sandwich before I eat out and then just pick a side salad and a drink and pretend I’m on a diet!!

Some moral code there….

I personally refuse to eat any meat that hasn't been killed on a goose feather pillow whilst being tickled to death.

Nah you think the animal cares how it's been killed once it's dead? It would rather be alive mate

So what you're saying is that because it's going to die anyway we shouldn't really care about how we do it or make it as comfortable as possible given the inevitible?

Look, i see what you're saying, we could just not kill them at all and then none of this would be a problem, but, unfortunately, eating meat is going to continue for some many centuries to come, and while that is happening i'd prefer it if i knew the meat i consumed had met its fate with as little suffering as possible.

Personally, I love the way meat tastes and i'm not going to stop eating it, but, I would certainly be happy to eat less meat and pay much more for it if I could guarantee it was ethically farmed.

Unfortunately, with the way consumerism has gone in the past 50-80 years making sure 100% of meat that makes it to market is of the highest ethical standard is not possible. Historically speaking, meat was eaten maybe once or twice a week, now you can expect it to be eaten with almost every meal, every day.

CatchingtheCat · 29/09/2025 15:35

YADNBU. It is also illegal to slaughter animals this way unless they are for consumption by Muslims - which the vast majority of five guys is not.

DrowningInSyrup · 29/09/2025 15:36

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 15:01

Because I think allowing a minority religion to have such reach that all meat in the country is slaughtered in a barbaric fashion and unwillingly fed to us is deeply concerning?

Watch a YouTube video on non halal abattoirs they are absolutely grim and nothing could convince me that they are slaughtered humanely either.

Halfaday · 29/09/2025 15:36

How does the slaughter of an ethically farmed animal differ? Genuine question

confusedcrane · 29/09/2025 15:36

There's no nice way to kill an animal.

There's also plenty of sources to read on slaughtering practices in the UK for halal and non-halal meat that are neutral and factual to keep yourself informed so you can chose whether you feel comfortable with it or not.

If you don't want to eat it, you can chose to try the vegetarian/vegan instead or eat elsewhere.

Wynter25 · 29/09/2025 15:37

Who cares.

Monstermissy36 · 29/09/2025 15:38

You can’t humanly kill something that doesn’t want to die….

all slaughter is grim and I am a meat eater, it’s not a nice thing.

OP, you are spreading lies and misinformation

There are 178 Five Guys branches in the UK.

Only three of them are fully halal (B'ham Fort, London Park Royal and M'ter Arndale).

A further 20 serve halal beef but also serve pork.

Why have you twisted this into 'Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal' and what is your agenda?

https://fiveguys.co.uk/halal/

There is a large sign on the Wimbledon branch proclaiming that its meat is halal. I can’t imagine that Wimbledon is a special case and, if not already, they will be rolling it out in their other branches.

But you are imagining that, that's exactly what you're doing. You're just basing this on nothing but assumptions.

IdaGlossop · 29/09/2025 15:39

I am a heartless meat eater. A vegetarian colleague asked me, on learning I eat rabbit: 'But don't you think about the little fluffy bunny?' Nope. All meat eating requires putting a distance between yourself and slaughter. However, I understand that some people are provoked by the majority being forced to adopt the habits of the minority.

BallerinaRadio · 29/09/2025 15:39

I think the main thing we can take away from this thread is actually a lot of Mumsnet seen to advocating for veganism which is very interesting!

Happyjoe · 29/09/2025 15:39

mugglewump · 29/09/2025 15:02

Because most non-Muslims don't give a monkey's about the type of meat, but most Muslims do? The animals are stunned before the slaughter so there is no real difference. Either you think killing animals for food is wrong or you don't. Don't make your religious prejudice about the animals please.

Prob is that quite a lot of Halal meat isn't stunned.

I’d have said “oh yes I do, makes it all the more tastier tbh”

Let's call a spade a spade they're provoked by the colour of their skin

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 29/09/2025 15:40

If you're concerned about animal welfare, I suggest you go vegan, or only eat meat when you are sure that it has come from a supplier with high welfare standards. Halal meat is neither better nor worse than most other meat that will be available in mass catering establishments.

the veggies amongst us will be drawn like flies to the lights with a thread title like this

I’m sure they’re comforted by prayer as their throats are slit.

What humane treatment do you think they get in abattoirs? People working there get PTSD from the awful sights they see. They are grim af and many throats get slit.
